The venerable Confederate veteran lived to within half a year of the century mark. He was born in the spring of 1842 in Fayette County. During the past seven years he was a familiar figure on the courthouse plaza and at other gathering places of aged men. Among his favorite pastimes was the relating of tales of Civil War days.
Rites in Albany were held from the Baptist Church and were joined by an American Legion escort of honor. The survivors especially appreciated this honor paid by World War veterans to a Texas volunteer for the cause of the Old South, one of the rapidly thinning ranks of Civil War soldiers.
The aged man had outlived four of his eight children. The survivors include, in addition to the Kerrville daughter, three sons, Sam and Tom of Albany, and Joe of Odessa; 34 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
