1. Howard Milton Sawyer 5, son of Perry
Sawyer and Ora Inez Thompson, was born on 28 May 1911
and died in Aug 1994 at age 83.
General Notes: Pappy. He kept Double-Bubble gum for the
ggrandkids. Would honk beep-beep when you reached up and grabbed his nose. The little ones
loved it.
I remember Pap putting a saccharin tablet in a spoon with a little tea or coffee and
crushing it to sweeten the drink. He liked his coffee strong. I remember he would mix
honey or molasses with butter and put it on a biscuit after supper.
Pap told me that when he was a young man in Trimble that the area flooded. All the
railroad tracks were covered going north across the bottom. The engineer needed to know if
the tracks were washed out so they put a flat car on the front end. Pap said he and
another man stood on the end of the flat car and used long poles with a wheel on the end,
holding the wheel on the track under the water. The train then pushed the car through. Pap
and the other man were to yell out if the wheel lost the track. This was a steam
locomotive. I remember he was paid what seemed like very little now.
Howard married Francis Louise Jetton8 on 26 Dec 1933, daughter of John Percis Jetton and Alice Cherry. Francis was born on 8 Nov 1910 and died on 26 Dec 1981 at home Mason Hall, Obion Co., TN at age 71. The cause of her death was Heart attack.
