BAKER, CLARENCE MR.

Obituary & Article

Muskegon Chronicle, Muskegon, Michigan, 29 February 1952, Page 1

CRASH KILLS FATHER, SON.  Train Hits Car At Getty, Airline.  A father and son suffered fatal injuries today when their car was struck by a C. & O. passenger train at the Getty street-Airline Highway-US-31 crossing.  Killed instantly was Einar C. Baker, 21 years old, 1697 Terrace street, who was thrown 60 feet from the wrecked car.  His body was found on the graveled roadbed, four feet from the tracks.  His father, Clarence Baker, 59 years old, 2018 Whitehall road, who was believed to be the driver died at 9:10 a. m. at Hackley Hospital, about one and a half hours after the accident.  Taken to the hospital by Lee ambulance, he was near death on arrival.  Father and son were carpenters employed by Alstrom Construction Company on the new Grand Haven High School building.  They were en route to work at 7:33 a. m. when the tragedy occurred.  Their deaths raised the county’s traffic toll to eight victims this month, making February the worst month for auto fatalities in the county’s history.  The county’s death toll for 1952 now stands at nine.  SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES investigating the crash said the cause could not be determined.  It is believed the car windows may have steamed or were frosted over and the driver did not see the approaching diesel train.  Milton Gardner, Spring Lake, R.R. 2, a witness, told Special Deputy William Wilson the Baker car, heading south on Getty toward US-31, drove directly into the path of the engine.  He said flasher signals were working and the train seemed to be blowing its whistle more than usual.  The impact hurled the 1942 model car against the concrete base of the flasher signal, trapping the elder Mr. Baker in the demolished vehicle.  Force of the blow knocked the three foot square base more than an inch out of line.  Mrs. Einar Baker, a bride of about a year, was reported near collapse after being informed of her young husband’s death.  She is an expectant mother.  The elder Mrs. Baker was at the hospital when her husband died.  CORONER John A. DeHorn said a crushed skull caused the instant death of the younger man.  An autopsy will be held to determine cause of the father’s death.  It is believed he suffered internal injuries.  The engineer of the Holland-bound passenger train was Berhold Hagen, 454 Yuba street, who said the train was traveling about 30-miles an hour.  He brought the train to a half 148 feet beyond the intersection.  Deputy Wilson said the train was allowed to proceed to Holland.  Crew members will be questioned following their return to Muskegon late today.  Investigating officers reported the pavement was clear of ice and visibility was good for a considerable distance down the track.  Muskegon Heights police assisted Deputies Charles Harken, Richard Minzey, and Wilson at the scene.  THE ELDER Mr. Baker was prominent in building trade circles here, serving as secretary for Carpenters Union, Local 100.  His son was a member of the union.  Both were active in church affairs.  Einar, a graduate of North Muskegon High School, was a member of the White Lake Gospel Center, heading the church’s youth organization.  Clarence Baker was an active member of Lakeside Baptist Church.  He and his wife, Hazel, were married June 28, 1917, in Greenwood Township, Oceana County.  Surviving Clarence Baker are his wife; two sons, Ivan, of Bailey, and David, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Connell, of Whitehall, Marva and Marsha, at home, and Mrs. Walter Smith, of Stony Dell, Mo.; two brothers, Maurice of Muskegon, and Seth, of Ferry; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Collins, of Muskegon; Mrs. Charles Gilbert, of Rothbury, and Mrs. Myrtle Tillottson, of Shelby, and four grandchildren.

Double Rites Planned for Crash Victims.  Double funeral services will be held for Clarence and Einar C. Baker, father and son, who were killed early yesterday when their car was demolished by a C&O passenger train at the Getty St.-Airline Highway US-31 crossing.  Time of the funeral has not been determined pending arrival of the senior Mr. Baker’s daughter, Mrs. Walter Smith of Stony Dell, Mo.  Tentative arrangements call for a prayer service at the Gee Funeral Home in Whitehall followed by joint funeral services at Lakeside Baptist Church in Muskegon.  The father, Clarence, was born Aug. 15, 1891, in Saginaw County coming to Muskegon with his parents in 1893.  He received his education at Blue Lake Township School and was a member of the Gospel Center of Montague.  He married the former Hazel VanFleet June 18, 1917, in Oceana County.            Surviving him are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Baker of Muskegon, his wife; two sons, Ivan of Bailey, and David, at home; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Connell of Whitehall, Marva and Marsha at home, and Mrs. Smith in Missouri; two brothers, three sisters and four grandchildren.  The son, Einar, is survived by his wife, in addition to the brothers and sisters.
