Leland Eugene HOLLY,
son of Birdsill Stowell and Mary M. (BAITINGER)
HOLLY; was born at Woodland, Michigan, July 30, 1896.
Birdsill Stowell HOLLY, son of Alanson P. and Harriet (STOWELL) HOLLY, was born at Seneca Falls, New York, November 10,
1857, and when a child, accompanied his mother and stepfather to Michigan. He later became a machinist at Woodland,
Michigan. He died in 1937. His wife, Mary M. (BAITINGER) HOLLY, died
in 1932. Her parents, Gottlieb and Mary
Jane BAITINGER, came to the United
States when young people. Birdsill
Stowell and Mary M. (BAITINGER) HOLLY
were the parents of 3 children, Leland Eugene HOLLY being third in order of birth.
Alanson P. HOLLY,
father of Birdsill Stowell, and son of Birdsill HOLLY, was born in New York State, where he died. Following his death, his widow, Harriet (STOWELL) HOLLY, remarried and came to
Michigan.
Birdsill HOLLY*,
father of Alanson P. HOLLY, was born
in 1820. In 1853 he moved with his wife
and children from Seneca Falls, N.Y. to Lockport. He was an inventor, and was granted more than 160 patents. In 1855 he invented the first rotary steam
fire engine. This invention
revolutionized fire fighting. He was
one of the original stockholders of the HOLLY
Manufacturing Company, which was organized in Lockport, May 2, 1859, with
$20,000 capital. The company began the
manufacturing of pumps and hydraulic machinery, and later constructed
waterworks systems for cities and villages, according to plans and inventions
of Mr. HOLLY. The firm constructed the Lockport Waterworks
in 1864. In 1859 Birdsill HOLLY invented a new system of water
supply, consisting of setting up pumping machinery to raise water to a
sufficient height, and supplying it under pressure, and being so regulated by
the pressure in the mains that the machinery would respond to the demand. In 1871 he established at Lockport, the
first central heating plant in the United States, and in 1877 organized the HOLLY Steam Combination Company, to
supply steam heat to cities through street mains. He died in 1894. He was a
resident of Lockport. Birdsill HOLLY was descended from John HOLLY, who was of English ancestry, and
was one of the founders of Stamford, Connecticut. Members of the HOLLY
family were soldiers in the Revolutionary War.
Leland E. HOLLY,
the subject of this sketch, was graduated from Albion (Michigan) College, with
an A.B. degree, in 1918; graduated University of Michigan, M.S., in 1920, and
M.D., in 1921 and graduate student at Blodgett Memorial Hospital, in Grand
Rapids. While a student of Albion
College, he served in the Medical (enlisted) Reserve Corps. He taught at the University of Michigan, one
year, and from 1922 to 1926 engaged in the private practice of his profession
at Hastings, Michigan. Since 1932 he
has maintained his practice in Muskegon.
Dr. HOLLY limits his practice
to radiology. He is president of the
Community Chest, and is a member of the School Board. Dr. HOLLY who is a
Republican, is a member of the following: Blue Lodge, F. and A.M., and Chapter;
American Board of Radiology (a diplomat since 1934); Radiological Society of
North America; American Roentgen Ray Society; American College of Radiology (a
fellow); American College of Physicians (a fellow); Sigma Nu; Phi Rho Sigma;
Elks Club; Rotary Club (president, 1938-39); Muskegon Country Club; White Lake
Country Club; White Lake Yacht Club; Muskegon Yacht Club; Century Club (a
director); and Muskegon Chapter, Citizens Historical Association. Dr. HOLLY
attends the Congregational Church. His
favorite recreation is gardening.
On August 10, 1921, Leland E. HOLLY married Enid BAUER,
daughter of William G. and Mary (PAGE)
BAUER, the latter of whom is
deceased. William G. BAUER is an attorney-at-law in
Hastings, Michigan. Mrs. HOLLY was born at Petersburg,
Michigan. Dr. and Mrs. HOLLY are the parents of one child,
Leland Eugene HOLLY (II), who was
born August 7, 1926.
