AMY BEERS, Superintendent, Hackley Hospital
Amy BEERS,
daughter of Dr. Frank and Rosa (HICE)
BEERS; was born at Flatbrookville, Sussex County, New Jersey.
Dr. Frank BEERS,
son of Tilghman and Mary (KEIPER) BEERS,
was born in Beersville, Pennsylvania in 1859.
He was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania in 1881, and began the practice of medicine in Flatbrookville, New
Jersey. He later settled in Bushkill,
Pennsylvania, where he practiced his profession the remainder of his life. He died in October 1906. His wife, Rosa (HICE) BEERS was born in Milford, New Jersey in November 1861. She died in February 1932. Frank and Rosa (HICE) BEERS were the parents of 7 children:

Tilghman BEERS,
father of Dr. Frank BEERS, was born
in Pennsylvania. He was a livestock
dealer, and owned and operated an inn at Beersville, Pennsylvania. The BEERS
family originally came from Germany to the United States, and settled in
Pennsylvania, about the time of the Revolutionary War. The village of Beersville, Pennsylvania was
named in honor of the BEERS family.
Amy BEERS,
the subject of this sketch, was graduated from high school in Bushkill,
Pennsylvania, and from the NewYork City Hospital School of Nursing, in
1908. After graduating from high
school, she taught school 3 years in Tannersville and Frutcheys, Pennsylvania. Following her graduation form the school of
nursing; she was supervising nurse at the New York City Hospital until March
10, 1910. She then became assistant
superintendent of Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan, where she remained
until 1912, at which time she went to Fairfield, Iowa, as superintendent of the
Jefferson County Hospital, which position she held until 1915. Miss BEERS
then returned to New York City, as assistant principal of the City Hospital
School of Nursing. In August 1916 she
returned to Fairfield, Iowa where she was in charge of the Jefferson county hospital. In 1918 Miss BEERS enlisted for service in the World War, and was assigned to
Hospital Unit R, as chief nurse. She
served overseas, and in 1918 received a decoration from the French Government
for her care of French soldiers in hospitals.
She was honorably discharged in March 1919, and returned to Fairfield,
Iowa. In September 1924, she returned
to Muskegon, Michigan where she has since been superintendent of Hackley
Hospital. Miss BEERS, who is an independent Republican, is actively affiliated
with the American Nurses Association, and is a member of the following:
Michigan Hospital Association (President); National League of Nursing
Education; American College of Hospital Administrators; American Red Cross (a
member since 1911, and a member of the board for the Muskegon Chapter);
Muskegon Woman’s Club; Muskegon Chapter of the Citizens Historical Association;
and First Congregational Church. Her
hobbies are tennis and swimming.
