Children: Sam and Fern had no children of their own; following Fern's death, Sam married a widow, Mrs. Frank (Ava) Carter of Dacoma, OK; Sam and Ava likewise had no children of their own. By her marriage to Frank Carter, Ava had three children: Dean (Bud), LeTresa, and Edith.

Sam and Ava divorced and Sam married Oneita McCarty Crutchfield on 13 March 1940; they had one son, Sammie Mac Riggs. Oneita and Charlie Crutchfield had two sons.
