Rod and Carolyn both graduated with music degrees from Northwestern Oklahoma State University - Carolyn in 1968, Rod in 1971. Carolyn taught in the public schools at Carmen-Dacoma OK, Kiowa KS, and Lone Wolf OK.

Rod completed master's and doctor's degrees at University of Oklahoma, in 1974 and 1995 respectively. He has taught music at Panhandle State University in Goodwell OK, Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, and his alma mater, Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva.

Carolyn completed the Master of Divinity degree at Phillips Theological Seminary in Enid in May 1997 and was ordained Deacon in the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church the following year. In 2001, she was ordained Elder. She has served churches in Capron, Quinlan, Freedom, Buffalo, Jet, and Prairie Valley, OK.
