Obituary [notation in longhand: Born Dec 11, 1883]
Gertrude Marguret Syler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Syler, was born at Eagle Center, Iowa, Dec. 11, 1880, and (died?) at the home of her parents, Jan. 14, 1904.
Inflamitory [sic] rheumatism caused her death. She was sick only about ten days and at no time was she thought to be seriously ill. Her sudden death was a sad surprise to the home and to her many friends.
She came with her parents to Woodbury County in 1891, where she has since resided. She leaves to mourn her departure, a father, mother, sister and three brothers.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. E. Clearwater, from the M. E. Church, assisted by Rev. O. M. Humphreys, of the Cong[regational?] Church, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Oto Cemetery.
In Memory of Gertie
Once again our heads must bow
Unto the stern, grim, old reaper, "Death";
Oh! How hard it is to be reconciled,
When it's on her, he's breathed his chilling breath.Such a precious one from us has gone,
And a voice that we loved is stilled
A spot is vacant in our hearts,
Which never, never can be filled.But God in his mercy has called back
Her whom His love had given;
And though her body slumbers here,
We know her soul is safe in Heaven.She has laft us thus to mourn her,
She has bid us all adieu;
She has gone to live in Heaven,
And her person is lost to view.How we loved our gentle Gertie,
How hard it was to give her up;
But an angel came down for her,
And removed her from our flock.Her heart so kind, so warm, so true,
That throbbed with love and tenderness,
Has ceased its throbbings here, to beat
In Heaven't realm of blessedness.And there it never more shall feel
A single sorrow or sting of pain,
But now forever free from sin,
In perfect bliss it shall remain.Oh! Methings I can see dear Gertie
As she waits on the heavenly strand;
I can see the bright crown on her forehead,
And the gleam of her beckoning hand.And as one by one earth's ties are broken,
And we see our love decay,
As our hopes so findly cherished,
Oft too quickly pass away.So one by one our hopes grow brighter,
As we near the shining shore,
For we know that over the river,
Waits our loved one gone before.Wynne Livermore
