Taken from the 31st Chapter of Proverbs (12th Verse)

By Eliza Jenkins Murphy

She will do him good, not evil all the days of his life
Yes, that's the kind of woman Isaac Murphy has for a wife
She never was in favor of grinding off his nose
If we wanted to take her anywhere she never but once did oppose

She made it a practice to buy her own fine shoes
And if he wished to take her to see her children she would not refuse
She would mend his old coat that was tattered and torn
Mend it every year no matter how long it had been worn

And when she sold anything he was sure to get a share
But she never had anything to give only something to wear
Her pin money was very scarce, the income very small
She didn't often have money to get anything at all

When her sheep was all gone and she had to buy her knitting yarn
She would patch up his old stockings if the holes were to big to darn
And that poor old coat to keep him from freezing with the cold
She would patch it and "weather board" it so the people she told

Now here is a pair of mittens I have to give away.
A present to Isaac Murphy on Father Washington's birthday
Now I have knit them on purpose for you
You can try them on and see how they will do

I think they are very nice I've knit them good and strong
And will knit you a pair every year as life continues on
That is the kind of woman Isaac Murphy has for a wife
To do him good and not evil all the days of his life.
