When Lightning Struck the House
By Almeda Murphy Snavely

When us children were all at home,
A storm came up one night,
And the lightning struck the old farmhouse
And gave us all a terrible fright

There were fourteen people in the house
Every bed in the house was filled,
It surely was one of God's mercies
That none of us were killed

The lightning struck the chimney,
And into the clock and threw open the door,
And tore a piece out of the mantel
Before it reached the floor.

The crash woke father and mother
And they both jumped out of bed
And anxiously ran from room to room
Expecting to find some of us dead

I remember how overjoyed we all were
When we found all alive and well
But how so many of us escaped
The Lord alone can tell
