While our search for Murgittroyd ancestors currently ends at Joseph Murgittroyd, we can trace our ancestry back to an earlier time through Josephs wife, Rachel Muller. Rachel was a member of the prominent and plentiful Miller of Claverrack, NY. The family name changed over time from Mulder to Muller and finally to Miller. Through Rachels family our family roots extent back in time to the arrival of Cornelis Stevensz Mulder at Fort Orange (Albany), NY aboard the ship De Hoop in 1661 and possibly back to the Peter Minuet administration at Manhattan in 1624.
The lives of our Dutch Ancestors during this colonial period reflects the hardness of life during this time and abounds with the perils of living on the edge of civilization. The family endured a deadly Indian attack at Schaghticoke, NY and produced a member so irascible as to have been banished from Manhattan island, Marie Du Trieux.
AND NOW A WORD OF CAUTION: Much of the information used to develop the following family history relies on the work of Henry Waterman George published in The New York Genealogical and Biographical Record in October, 1943 and entitled "THE MULDER-MULLER-MILLER FAMILY of Albany and Claverack, New York". In that work Mr. George identifies the mother of Rachel as Margariet Kittle, daughter of Daniel Ketelhuyn and Debora Viele of Schenectady, NY without stating a source or documentation. A latter Muller family researcher, Lauretta P. Harris of Schodack Landing, NY also attributes those parents to Margariet but also without specific documentation. Unfortunately a family history of the Viele family prepared by Katherine Knickerbacker Viele at the turn of the century states that Margariet Kittle, daughter of Daniel Ketelhuyn and Debora Viele, married someone other than our Cornelis C. Muller, but also with documentation. Thus the issue of Margariet and our true Kittle ancestry is brought into question. Both myself and another contemporary Muller family researcher, Margot Gifford are doubtful of Watermans claimed parentage of Margariet but have not as yet been able to definitely prove or disprove it. For that reason please do not please absolute faith in the maternal ancestry of Rachel claimed here. Later developments may result in changes to this line.
