Polk County
[IOWA] 1903 History of Polk County
Date: 3/4/03 9:58:08 AM Eastern Standard Time
From: Bare67deb@aol.com
To: IOWA-L@rootsweb.com
POLK COUNTY was established from the territory of the
original county of Keokuk in January, 1846, and named for President James
K. Polk. When first created it embraced a part of Jasper and Dallas
but in 1853 the boundaries were fixed as they now are. It lies in
the sixth tier east of the Missouri River and in the fourth north of
Missouri. The Des Moines River flows through it from north to south
and the Raccoon entering from the west unites with the Des Moines.
An account of its earliest settlements and the
establishment of Fort Des Moines will be found elsewhere. Thomas
Mitchell settled at Apple Grove in April, 1844, and in 1845 John Saylor
located in a grove on the east side of the Des Moines River about six
miles north of the fort. In 1846 Eli Trullinger settled in Franklin
township at a grove which bears his name. Walker Corey and John
Fisher with their families located in Elkhart township in 1846 near
Corey's Grove; Riley Thornton settled in Delaware township, the same year,
on Little Four Mile Creek and George Bebee located in Madison township.
James N. Stewart settled in Camp and James Smith in Douglass
township in 1847. Dr. T. K. Brooks, in 1845, bought a claim on the
east side of the Des Moines River and was the first postmaster of Fort Des
Moines. A town was laid out on the east side and named
Brooklyn which aspired to become he county-seat but failing disappeared
from the map. James C. Jordon took a claim several miles west of the
fort in 1846 on a creek which flows into the Raccoon River.
The first election in the county was held April 2,
1846, at which the following officers were chosen; John Saylor, probate
judge; W. T. Ayres, treasurer; Thomas Mitchell, sheriff; Thomas McMullen,
recorder; Benjamin Saylor, W. H. Meacham and E. W. Fouts,
commissioners. On the 25th of May of the same year the county-seat
was established at Fort Des Moines and the first term of court was held
that spring by Judge Joseph Williams, one of the log houses of the
garrison serving as a court-house.
The town of Fort Des Moines was platted by A. D. Jones,
county surveyor, in July, 1846. In July, 1849, Barlow Granger
established the first newspaper in the county which was a weekly named the
Iowa Star. In 1847 Miss Davis opened a school in one of the
government buildings, room No. 26. The Capital of the State was
located at Des Moines in 1857 and the first railroad, the Des Moines
Valley, reached the city on the 29th of August, 1866. This road was
built up the Des Moines valley from Keokuk. The Rock Island Railroad
reached the Capital a year later.

E. V. KOHL is one of the enterprising and successful men of Lincoln
Township. He was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, August 29*, 1849,
and is a son of William and Hannah (Fidderling**) Kohl. When our subject
was six years of age the family removed to Jones County, Iowa. Here he
grew to manhood. He was reared on a farm, and received his education in
the public schools of the county. Mr. Kohl was united in marriage, March
13, 1879, to Miss Mary Schrope***, a native of Schuylkill County,
Pennsylvania, and a daughter of William and Susan (Shick) Schrope, natives
of Pennsylvania. They resided in Jones County until 1880, when they came
to Shelby County, and Mr. Kohl bought 160 acres of partially improved
land. He now owns 240 acres of land, on which he has made many
improvements. He has a comfortable dwelling, a good barn, a grove and an
orchard, all bespeaking the thrift and wise management of the owner. Mr.
and Mrs. Kohl are the parents of four children-William, Eva Essi!
e, Josie May and Morris Lewis. Mr. Kohl is a strong supporter of the
Republican party. He is a member of the Evangelical church. Although he is
yet a young man, he has won a good position in the community and is one of
Lincoln Township's representative citizens. *born Aug. 27, 1849 **

I have just uploaded new records for NY City Almshouse for 1826 and 1827.
This adds to the existing records on Olive Tree
Genealogy for 1819, 1820, 1821, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1855, 1856, 1857 and
1858. When this project is finished the records will
be complete from 1819-1844 and 1855-1858 In the early 1800's port cities
in the USA bore the burden of immigration. By the time they arrived, so
many immigrants were tired, hungry and poor they ended up in the City
Almshouse.
As far back as the colonial era, New York City assumed
responsibility for its citizens who were destitute, sick, homeless, or
otherwise unable to care for themselves. The city maintained an almshouse,
various hospitals, and a workhouse on Blackwell's Island (now called
Roosevelt Island) for the poor.
Part of the information taken Almshouse clerks
was the place of birth of each person, the name of the ship they arrived
on and
where the ship sailed from. Using this online (free) database will allow
you to find individuals from many countries and many states within USA.
There are 180 individuals listed in the 1826 Alms House
Registers, along with the following ships they sailed on:
Albion ,Ann ,Ann Marie ,Atlantic ,Baltic ,Barcelona ,Bimmahome?

Dear Fellow Genealogists,
You are invited to a Heritage Day
Rally at the Oklahoma State
Capitol
on Tuesday, March 11. Sponsored by the Oklahoma Historical
Society
and a
coalition
of Oklahoma historical, genealogical and lineage organizations
to
show appreciation for our history and support for the preservation of
that
history,
the day will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the auditorium of the Wiley
Post
Building of the Oklahoma Historical Society at 2100 N. Lincoln,
Oklahoma
City.
After receiving details about the legislation needed, the
attendees
will proceed to the Capitol to speak with their legislators
about
the importance
of
completing the funding for the new Oklahoma History Center by
authorizing
the sale of the final $18 million in bonds needed to
complete
the project.
Attendees will have the opportunity
to tour the newly reopened
Research
Library and also to take a "hard hat" tour of the new History
Center
site.
The OHS parking lot will be reserved for your convenience and shuttle
vans
will be available to move you around once you are parked. All
three
venues
-- lobbying at the Capitol, the Library tour and the hard hat
tour
-- will be available beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continue until 3
p.m.
We
hope you can join us at the rally and encourage you to invite
others
who believe in the future of Oklahoma and who have an interest in
her
past.
If you cannot be there, you can still support the effort by
writing,
calling or e-mailing your legislators to urge their support.
For
more information,
please
call the Oklahoma Historical Society at 405-521-2491. We hope to
see
you there.
Sincerely,
Oklahoma Genealogical Society Board of Directors

Transported Convicts
24 March 1617
An open Warrant. Whereas it hath pleased his Majesty out of his singular
Clemency and mercy to take into his princely Consideration the wretched
estate of diverse of his Subjects who by the Laws of the Realm are
adjudged to die for the sundry offences though heinous in themselves, yet
not of the highest nature, so as his Majesty both out of his gracious
Clemency, as also for diverse weighty Considerations Could wish they might
be rather Corrected than destroyed, and that in their punishments some of
them might live, and yield a profitable Service to the Common wealth in
parts abroad, where it shall be found fit to employe them...
