Heirlooms on eBay
I have been amazingly fortunate with my discoveries on eBay. I have found items from many different branches of the family that might otherwise be lost.
Many times, there are sellers local to a town or area of your interest who put documents, photographs, correspondence, books and even the family bible up for auction on eBay. I have found them all except a family bible.
I even found a 1710 deed signed by my ninth great grandfather as well as my eighth great grandfather and his wife, plus over 40 letters of correspondence between 1830-1850.
Recently I found a cache of cabinet photographs and a small library collection including the household guest book, which spanned fifteen years and included names and addresses of many family and friends. This was from a maiden cousin's estate auction bought for resale on eBay by her local area dealer. The maiden cousin had lived until age 95 and I imagine her home was a small time capsule of unwanted belongings: memories of the past saved by a keen sighted seller of a wonderful service at our fingertips; eBay.
Start searching to see what your ancestors have left behind. Use the search titles and descriptions box and also the category lists to help filter unwanted items or perhaps the refine search option. Also, remember that not all sellers include the names on an item they're listing; the letter/cover collection I discovered did not include the family name and sometimes the town it is addressed to is mentioned but more often it's the town from where it was posted. Remember there were no stamps back then.
Best of luck in all your searching endeavors fellow genealogists,

Searching for Neighbors
When I started using the 1930 census of Idaho for Heyburn, Minidoka, I looked for my father and seven daughters who had lived there. My mother had died the year before. I came up with no matches, even though I knew this location was correct.
I then searched for neighbors, and was able to find a list of our family that way. Since the last name of Surrage was slightly smeared, the search engine skipped over it. It also stated that my grandmother was living with us when her home was in Utah.
I enjoy reading the messages each day. I have learned a lot from your column, which has helped me in my research.
Thanks,
Genevieve

Check Surrounding Entries
Sometimes the name you are looking for in a census record isn't where you expect it to be. On two occasions, while doing research on a book I am writing, I found that next-door neighbors turned out to be key business associates of the people I was tracing. On both occasions the information from that next entry solved questions that had slowed my work for months.

Manitoba Vital Records online
You can now access the following data for Manitoba on-line at no charge:
--- Births (more than 100 years ago)
--- Marriages (more than 80 years ago)
--- Deaths (more than 70 years ago)
The website is at:
http://gov.mb.ca/cca
At the bottom on the far left corner click on Vital Statistics. On the next screen, at the bottom left, click on Search database.
For example, I needed the first name of a child of George Milne and Henrietta Miller who I estimated was born about 1895.
I typed in the last name Milne and 1895 in the year column (you can also indicate to look earlier or later re the year). I found a William Wilfred Milne born February 24, 1895 s/o Henrietta Miller.
I hope the information I gave you works. As with all old documents, some of the names are misspelled and some information has been recorded incorrectly. However, I was able to fill in a lot of missing dates on my tree as well.

[IOWA] 1903 History of Worth County
Date:    4/23/03 11:58:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time
From:    Bare67deb@aol.com
To:    IOWA-L@rootsweb.com

WORTH COUNTY was created in 1851 and named for General William J. Worth who
was prominent officer in the Mexican War.  It lies on the Minnesota line in the fifth tier west of the Mississippi and contains an area of four hundred two square miles.  Tributaries of the Shellrock River and Lime Creek flow through the county in a southerly direction and in the northwest portion are Silver Lake, Rice Lake and Bright's Lake, all small sheets of water.
There were originally about 10,000 acres of native woodland along the Shellrock and
in groves scattered over the county. The first settlements were made by Gulbrand Olsen and Norwegian companions in June, 1853.  They made claims on the Shellrock near where Northwood stands where water power was found.  In the spring of 1854 Simon Rustad, Chris.
Amandsen, Ole Lee and three brothers named Hart settled in a grove on the Shellrock near the State line.  In 1855 D. H. Phelps, Tilly McWithy and Hiram Bilton with two sons made claims in the same vicinity.  In May, 1855, Charles Johnson took a claim at Rice Lake in the vicinity of Bristol.  During that season many families settled in that part of the county and at Silver Lake, on Elk Creek, at Wright's Grove and Glen Mary.
The town of Northwood was laid out in November, 1857, by Charles Wardell and the next year Lemuel Dwelle and Joel Dayton platted additions to it.  The first store was opened in September by B. H. Beckett in the first frame building which was erected by S. H. Franklin.  Goods were transported from McGregor by wagon, a distance of one hundred thirty miles.  A post-office was established in 1857, of which Dr. S. H. Franklin was postmaster.  In the
summer of 1858 Charles Wardell built a dam across the Shellrock River and erected a sawmill.  The town of Bristol was platted in the spring of 1857 by Chancy S. Lane and J. S. Loveland, in the western part of the county.  Dr. James Keeler had settled on the site of the town in 1856 and the largest settlement in the county had grown up in that vicinity.  A store was opened in Bristol in 1857 and a post-office was established the same year with Dr. James Keeler postmaster.
The county was organized in October, 1857, and the following officers were chosen:  Dr. James Keeler, judge; C. S. Lane, treasurer and recorder; B. K. Walker, clerk; Lorin Turnure, sheriff; and Amos Bentley, prosecuting attorney.  Bristol and Northwood were from the first rivals for the county-seat and the commissioners appointed to select a location gave it to
Bristol.  The citizens of that town realized the dangers of ultimate removal, as their town was near the west line of the county.  To remove this peril they petitioned the Legislature for the purpose of securing a change in the county boundaries by adding a portion of the territory of the east side of Worth to Mitchell and annexing a part of Winnebago on the west.  In this they
were not successful and in 1863 the county-seat was removed to Northwood by a vote of one hundred fifteen to forty.  No court-house had been built at Bristol and the first term of court was held in a log cabin by Judge John Porter in September, 1859.  On the 24th of October, 1869, the first newspaper, called the Northwood Pioneer, was issued by P. D. Swick  The
Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railroad runs through the county from south to north and the Milwaukee runs through the southeast corner.

Dear Lake County Researchers,
Several additions have been made to the Lake County OH GenWeb site recently.  A new map link has been put in for the Auditor/Treasurer site.  After you locate a property in the database, you can click on "map" and get a wonderful satellite view, or click on other things for street view, etc.
A new page for Government has been created with this link as well as several other government office links.  The reason for this is by popular demand.  Many people are trying to locate government offices, especially the courts and the sheriff's office.  More will go into this
page at a later date, but for now it is mostly county level.
There are several new biographies which were printed in the Telegraph in the 1860s and reprinted in "LakeLines," the newsletter of the Lake County Genealogical Society (actually before it was titled).  Find stories under "biographies," of early Lake County Pioneers:
Gen. Edward Paine
Abraham Skinner
Eli Bond
Gov. Samuel Huntington
Judge John Walworth
Solomon Kingsbury
Anson Sessions
Ebenezer Smith
Benjamin Blish
Jedediah Hills.
There are a few more which I will try to locate to copy.
Happy Hunting!
