Anna (Muehlfeld) Schulz

Image Image The first child of Peter MUEHLFELD the third and his second wife Elisabetha Margaretha nee MÜHLFELD to be born in America was Anna MUEHLFELD who was born 18 Feb 1858 in Clark County, Ohio. This date and her baptism date of 12 Jun 1859 are recorded in the prayerbook of her father.

We find Anna in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census with her father Peter in Mad River Twp., Clark Co., OH. She is also living with her father in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, but now in Frankenmuth Twp., Saginaw Co., MI. Anna was confirmed at nearby Immanuel Lutheran Church in Frankentrost, Saginaw Co., MI on 24 Mar 1872 according to those church records.

On 23 Dec 1879, 21 year old Anna was married to William SCHULZ in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan.
William SCHULZ was born 29 Oct 1852 in Chippewa, Ontario, Canada and according to his obituary came to Michigan when only 2 years old.
William and Anna lived on "the Genesee Plank Road" (Dixie Highway in later years) in Bridgeport Twp., Saginaw Co., MI where William was a farmer. The Saginaw County Atlas for 1896 includes a photo of the Wm. Schulz home along with their portraits. This Atlas also indicates their farm was located at the corner of King Road and Dixie Highway. This is where we find the family on the U.S. Census Records of 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920.1, 2, 3, 4

Anna and William had 6 children, all daughters:

  • Ellen Dorothea (SCHULZ) QUILLIN, 1887-1970
  • Emma Louise (SCHULZ) WILCOX, 1889-1975
  • Lillian Marie (SCHULZ) KUEHN, 1891-1963
  • Florence Anna SCHULZ, 1892-1914
  • Marie Johanna (SCHULZ) BOW, 1895-1979

Anna died 8 Apr 1925 at her home in Bridgeport Township, Saginaw Co., Michigan of apoplexy. 5
William died 26 Dec 1922 in Bridgeport Township, Saginaw Co., MI of urinal poisoning.6

William Schulz - William Schulz, 68 years old, a well known resident of Bridgeport township, died Tuesday at his home on the Genesee road. He was born in Chippewa, Ont., October 29, 1854, and came to Bridgeport when only two years old. He was married December 23, 1879, to Anna Muhlfeld, of Springfield, O., who who survives him together with five children: Mrs. H. Gerken of this city, Ellen Schulz, San Antonio, Tex., Mrs. William Wilcox, Pontiac, Mrs. A. Kuehn, Detroit, and Mrs. H. Bow, Bridgeport.

William Schultz - The funeral of William Schultz will take place at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon from the home, Bridgeport township, and at 2 o'clock from St. John's Lutheran church, Saginaw. Rev. Frederick Volz will officiate and burial will be in Forest Lawn. Mr. Schultz was 70 years old, having been born October 29, 1852.
William Schulz - The funeral of William Schulz will take place Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence on the Genesee road and at 2 o'clock from St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church. Rev. Frederick Volz will officiate, with burial in Forest Lawn.

Anna Schulz - Mrs. Anna Schulz, widow of William Schulz, died Wednesday at her farm home on the Dixie highway. She was born at Springfield, February 18, 1858, came to Michigan in 1867 and was married to Mr. Schulz in 1879 in Saginaw. Mr. Schulz died December 26, 1922. She is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Henry J. Gerken, Saginaw; Miss Ellen D. Schulz, San Antonio, Tex.; Mrs. William D. Wilcox, Pontiac; Mrs. Arthur B. Kuehn, Detroit; Mrs. Harvey J. Bow, Bridgeport; two grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. George Eisenhauer, Frankenmuth. She was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran church and a member of the Ladies' Aid society. The funeral will take place at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the home and at 2 o'clock from St John's Lutheran church. Rev. Frederick Volz will officiate with burial in Forest Lawn.

Anna and William are both buried in the family plot at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Saginaw, Saginaw Co. MI. The "SCHULZ" family monument stands in the midst of the smaller stones. Anna's gravestone is inscribed "MOTHER, ANNA M. SCHULZ, FEB. 18, 1858, APR. 8, 1925". William's gravestone has the following: "FATHER, WILLIAM SCHULZ, OCT. 29, 1852, DEC. 26, 1922"
