George Peter Muehlfeld
Georg Peter Mühlfeld was born 1 October 1832 in Wahlen, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, the second child and second son of Peter Mühlfeld and his wife Anna Maria nee Keil. He was born in the night time at 1 o'clock and baptized later the same day at the Catholic Church in Wald Michelbach, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. His godfather was Georg Peter HELM (as near as we can tell from the German handwritten record).1
George came to the United States along with his sisters Gertrude and Barbara aboard the SS Sir Robert Peel, which sailed from London and arrived in New York on April 28, 1855. According to the Manifest of the Passengers on this ship, he was a farmer, age 23, and from Germany. The Immigrant Ships Transcriber Guild has his name listed as George Nuhlfeld, and his sisters as Gertrude Muhlfeld and Barbara Nuhlfeld. Emigration information from the Hessen Darmstadt archives confirms that Georg Peter Mühlfeld, age 23, left Wahlen for London in March 1855 with his sisters Gertraud and Barbara.
We basically lost track of Georg Peter after this, but believe he probably lived for a while in Springfield, Clark Co., OH with the rest of his family. We suspect he filed his declaration of intent to become an American citizen as Peter Muehlfeld, Jr. on November 8, 1856 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. These papers were filed the same day as Peter Muehlfeld, Sr. and the age of 24 years old on this document would seem to fit.
Also in Clark County, Ohio, a marriage record was found of Peter Muehlfeld and Betsy Jones who were married September 15, 1859. While their ages aren't given in the marriage record, the 1860 U.S. Federal Census lists a "Peter Milfelt" age 26 with Elizabeth, age 22 in Moorefield Twp., Clark Co., OH and the 1870 U.S. Federal Census lists a Peter Muehlfeld, age 31, with his wife Betsey, age 29, also in Moorefield Twp. (Census records aren't always accurate - or they aged differently back then!)
We suspect we find the same family in Springfield Twp., Clark Co., OH in the 1880 Census where Peter "Wielfelt", age 49, farm laborer, is listed with his wife Elizabeth E., age 40, and daughter Malinda, age 9. Clark County records show a daughter Mary born 01 Aug 1871 in Springfield Township to (?) Muehlfeld & Elizabeth Jones. "Malinda" and "Mary" are probably the same person, though we're not sure exactly which name would be correct.
Elizabeth (Elley?) "Muhfelt" died on 28 Oct 1894 at the age of 61 years in Springfield Twp., Clark Co., OH and her death was reported by Peter Muhfelt.
Further, some early family records from about 1913 suggested that one of the children of Peter Sr. lived in Springfield, OH.
Unfortunately, none of the above records provide the definite link between the families of Peter Jr. and Peter Sr. But, I'm fairly confident that these records pertain to Georg Peter, son of Peter Muehlfeld. Further investigation is surely needed, especially to discover what happened to this family line. Did it end with his daughter or perhaps there are descendants we are not aware of?
