Adam MUEHLFELD was born 26 December 1844 in Wahlen, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, the first child of Peter MÜHLFELD the third and his second wife Elisabetha Margaretha nee MÜHLFELD. He was born in the morning and baptized that afternoon at the Catholic Church in Wald Michelbach, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. His godfather was his cousin, Adam MÜHLFELD, son of Elisabetha's brother Peter MÜHLFELD II and his wife Eva Catherine nee WIEDMANN.1

12 year old Adam arrived in New York on 25 Apr 1857 along with his mother, 7 year old brother Peter, sister Anna Maria, and half-brother Leonhard. They traveled from London aboard the ship "Plymouth Rock".

We find Adam in the 1860 U.S. Federal Census with his father Peter in Mad River Twp., Clark Co., OH. Still in Clark County, Ohio, Adam became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 06 Oct 1866. 2
He later moved to Frankenmuth Twp., Saginaw Co., MI with his parents and siblings where we find the family in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census. Like his father, Adam was a farmer and continued to live at the King Road farmstead in Frankenmuth Township the rest of his life. Adam's family is listed in this location in the 1880, 1900, and 1910 U.S. Federal Census.3, 4, 5

Adam was married to Louisa EISENHAUER on May 24, 1877 in East Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan by Father Jos. REIS at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Witnesses of the marriage were George EISENHAUER of Frankenmuth and George BIERLEIN of East Saginaw. According to the marriage record, Adam was age 30 and Louisa age 22 at the time of their marriage. 6
Louisa EISENHAUER was born in Frankenmuth Township, Saginaw County, Michigan 6 October 1855, the daughter of Franz Joseph EISENHAUER and his wife Henrietta BENDER. After her husband died, Louisa moved to Birch Run, Saginaw County, MI as seen in the 1920 and 1930 Census records.7, 8

Adam and Louisa had 7 children together:

  • Elsa Anna (MUEHLFELD) POLZIN, 1890-1968
  • Clara Augusta (MUEHLFELD) REINHARDT, 1893-1986

Adam died 3 August 1917, just a few days after his half-brother Leonhard died, while walking in a field on the farm of his sister, Gertrude WALTER, in Amelith, Bay County, Michigan. Louisa died 3 October 1947 at the home of her daughter, Clara REINHARDT, in Blumfield Township, Saginaw County, MI.

PROMINENT COUNTY RESIDENT DIES
ADAM MUEHLFELD OF FRANKENMUTH DROPS DEAD WHILE ON VISIT
Adam Muehlfeld, a well known resident of Frankenmuth township, died suddenly yesterday morning. He was on a visit to his sister, Mrs. Gertrude Walter at Amelith near Bay City, going there Thursday. Yesterday morning at about 8 o'clock while walking in the field he suddenly fell over dead. He was born in Germany December 26, 1843 and came to this country when eleven years old, and for the past forty years has resided in Frankenmuth township. He is survived by his wife and seven children, Mrs. Louis Memmer of Albee, George and Mrs. George Polzin of Birch Run, Mrs. Albert Polzin of Grand Blanc, Mrs. Charles Shuman, Carl and Clara at home; 14 grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. William Schultz of Bridgeport, and Mrs. George Eisenhauer of Blumfield; two stepsisters, Mrs. Gertrude Walter of Amelith, Mrs. Barbara Goebel of Edgerton, Ohio; a stepbrother, Valentine of Blakesle, Ohio.
The remains were brought to this city and taken to the undertaking parlors of A. Deisler & Son from where the funeral will be held Monday morning with interment in Frankenmuth cemetery. A stepbrother, Leonard Muehlfeld, was buried last Wednesday at Frankenmuth.

Muehlfeld - The funeral of Adam Muehlfeld was held yesterday morning at 9 o'clock from the Chapel of A. Deisler & Son, and at 9:30 from the Church of the Sacred Heart. Rev. Fr. Joseph Reis officiated, and interment was made in the Janson cemetery, Frankentrost. The pallbearers were Peter, Joseph, Martin and George Goebel, Louis Memmer and Albert Polzin, all relatives.

MUEHLFELD, MRS. LOUISA, Blumfield Township.
Widow of Adam Muehlfeld, died Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Reinhardt, Blumfield Township, after a lingering illness. Louisa Eisenhauer was born in Frankenmuth Township Oct. 6, 1855, and was married to Adam Muehlfeld, May 27th, 1877, at the Sacred Heart Church, Saginaw. Mr. Muehlfeld died Aug. 3, 1917. She leaves five daughters and two sons, Mrs. Louis Memmer of Albee township, Mrs. Arthur Wright and Mrs. George Polzin of Birch Run, Mrs. Albert Polzin of Grand Blanc, Mrs. William Reinhardt and George Muehlfeld of Flint, Karl Muehlfeld of Frankenmuth Township; one sister, Rose Eisenhauer of Saginaw, 23 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. Friends may see her at the Deisler Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Sunday. Funeral announcement will be made later.

MUEHLFELD, MRS. LOUISA, Blumfield Township.
The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. from the Deisler Chapel, and at 9:30 a.m. from the Sacred Heart Church. Rev. Fr. Charles W. Burkhardt will officiate, burial in the Jansen Cemetery, Frankentrost. Friends will meet Monday evening at 8:00 p.m. at the chapel for prayers. She may be seen after 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

Adam and Louisa are both buried in the Janson Cemetery on Bradley Rd. in Blumfield Twp., Saginaw Co. MI. Near the large family "MUEHLFELD" stone are the smaller stones of Adam and Louisa. Adam's gravestone is inscribed "FATHER, 1844-1917". Louisa's gravestone is inscribed "MOTHER, 1855-1947".
