Alf.gif 24 KB 1908 My maternal grandfather Alfred Stephen SMITH (1884-1938)

alf2.gif KB Alfred Stephen SMITH (football trainer), third from the right back row, probably taken about 1915.
Football team unknown (vertical striped panels), but would have been in the Brighton area

bfc_sm.gif 23 KB 1920's Brighton Football Club (Australian Rules Football)- Alfred Smith standing on the left.
Brighton Football Club (BFC) had as its home ground Hurlingham Park, Nepean Highway, Brighton, Victoria. The old Brighton Football Club no longer exists. Initially, it was in the VFA (Victorian Football Association). Later it merged with Caulfield to become the Brighton Caulfield Football Team, and in the 1960's it folded.
Brighton Football Club won only one Premiership in the VFA in 1948 with Col Williamson as their Captain-Coach. BFC was runner-up twice in the 1920's, in 1926 and 1927 both times to Coburg. The Captain-Coach was Jim Walsh who headed the VFA goal-kicking in 1928 when BFC finished third. BFC came third in 1928 and 1937 and finish runners-up to Brunswick in 1938 with J.Davis as the captain-coach.
The club used the same guernsey in the twenties as it did in the forties and fifties, with a solid colour with a BFC monogram. The red and white was used in the thirties, in place of the solid colour, with a very dark panel down the front with whitish panels at the edges of the front.
The front bottom right hand corner of the photo is signed 'Haldridgton' or 'H.Aldridgton'.
