Microfilm number 0856060 at the LDS FHC

This will give a number for the individual, their name, age, height, where they are from, religious affiliation, occupation, who recommended them for service, date of appointment, where they served and dates of service specific to the areas, ultimate years of service and pension/gratuity if eligible.

It may also tell you if they married while in service (they had to have permission to do so and I saw some men who were dismissed for failing to secure such permission) or if they resigned themselves. Most of the ones who resigned did so to emigrate and sometimes it said where to, so if you get lucky enough to find a name that is yours and you have the date of resignation, you will have a ballpark idea of when they left Ireland.

Several men were rejected as unsuitable for service as judged by the surgeon and while not stated, the reason must have been a medical one. Finally, it gave notations as to whether someone had been commended for good work or punished or fined for something less. One man served for 14 years and through the punishments received, which were foreiture of certain years of service, dependent on the offense, lost his entire time in the service by this method.

I also could not help but note that several men with long years of service and close to pension would be summarily dismissed with no real clues as to why. I will not interject a political comment about this, suffice to say, I had the thought. I have gotten probably half way through the film and have extracted Cork names so far. There are many, many others on the film. The Northern counties were home to the majority of the men. Very interesting reading.

I am leaving out the ranks achieved as I do not yet know what they all mean, nor could I actually read some as written. The ledger is not large enough to incorporate as many as six changes. All men started at P 1sc 3D having had no answer to my earlier inquiry I will assume this may mean Private First Class? I have absolutely no knowledge of the rank at all.

I have learned from Bernie Couming that P 1sc is a rank that was not achieved until training was completed and the individual was on the job for some length of time at his first station or "allocation" as they call it on the film. SC 3D sub constable.

Also that: Sub Inspector was the top position in the RIC for the entire county. So I guess it figures that a St. Ledger/Leger was one!

As I learn more about the ranks I will pass it on to you. A quick note on the emigrations. If they were emigrating to America it did say so sometimes. It also said emigration to Australia for some of the men. I am not sure you could make an assumption that if no location was given it meant America. But at least it clues you in to the emigration. All were spelled emigration by the way.
