Johann Friedrich Walch was born on the 14th of March 1835 in Wilferdingen, Baden, attended the elementary school there, and then learned the blacksmith's craft. After completing his apprenticeship he emigrated with his parents to America, arriving in New York after a voyage of 120 days on a sailing ship, and then settled in Syracuse. Here he learned in Christian Cook's business the craft of furniture-making. On the 7th of December 1856 he married his still-surviving wife, Karoline née Arheidt, from this area. In the year 1857 Mr. Walch established his furniture business on South Salina Street, which over the course of time made him a rich man. In his wife he found a faithful assistant who had no slight share of the credit for the business success of her husband, and who lives with their children at No. 357 W. Onondaga Street. After 40 years of marriage and an arduous business life, he died on the 30th of June 1897, leaving behind his wife and 10 children, namely: Wilhelm Johann, Dr. Carl J., Carolina Katherina, Philipp Nicholas, Wilhelmine Friederike, Louise Magdalene, Friedrich Eduard, Anna Maria, Gertrude Harriet and Jessie C.
