The Mississippi 40th Regiment

The history of the Mississippi 40th shows that Company H was an Artillary company.  It was fully organized at Meridian, MS on May 14, 1862 and was in the Battle of Iuka, MS, Holly Springs, MS and the Battle of Vicksburg.  After the surrender at Vicksburg, the company marched out of the city as a paroled company, the men were exchanged for Yankee prisoners, and were soon back in the service again.  Then company was then sent to reinforce General Bragg at Chattanooga, TN, and fought all the battles from there to Atlanta, during Sherman's push to the sea.  Company H and the 40th Mississippi fought the battles of Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, and Ezra Church.  (Those battles underlined took place in Georgia, and are shown on the battle map below.) This regiment went finally to North Carolina as a part of General Joseph E. Johnstons's army and was surrendered at Durham, NC on April 26, 1865.
