Project Background
The Speed Y-DNA Project began in April 2005 to investigate ancestral origins for Speed branches that settled in different regions of the world.

Project Goals
To identify related branches of the Speed family and their earliest documentable ancestors.

Project News
(as of 6 January 2008) December 31, 2007 FamilyTree DNA received a kit for a Speed descending from a branch that immigrated from Scotland to America. FamilyTree DNA estimates thirty-seven of his Y-DNA markers will be identified by early March. Detailed information is pending on his lineage and Speed ancestor's migration date.
(as of 15 February 2007) A
Deep SNP-I test (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism test to identify the subclade/subcategory within haplogroup I) has confirmed the descendant of John Speed, through grandson Charles Stewart Speed is in deep clade I1a, within Haplogroup I. It is likely that most of the Speed participants in Haplogroup I are in deep clade I1a.
Per FamilyTree DNA, "[t]he value of a Deep Clade Panel test is to identify your twig of the Y DNA tree, and then to use this information to consult the scientific literature to determine the geographic locations identified for your twig. As research progresses, more geographical specificity associated with SNPs will emerge."
All other marker results have been returned for the twelve participants who have joined the project thus far.

Family Tree DNA has confirmed that the haplogroup (a geographic group that shares the majority of Y-marker numbers) for many participants of the Speed family are I and R1b, both located in northwestern Europe.
Ken Nordtvelt's notes on haplogroups I & R1b are here.
Walt Athey's Haplogroup Predictor more specifically predicts haplogroups for the Speed Y-markers as I1a, I1c, & R1b.
(FamilyTree DNA has confirmed Kits 35188 & 35491 are in Haplogroup I with a P19 SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) test.)

Please view Haplogroup Distribution Maps, created by Dr. J. Douglas McDonald of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for illustrations of the concentration of haplogroups in Europe and around the world.

Note: Family Tree DNA gives a range of 4-6 weeks for the identification and notification of test results, depending on the test chosen (the more markers, the more time needed).

Genetic Distance Chart (Identifies the summed difference between all identified markers for any two participants.)
An example based on one marker:
Participant A's marker 388 is 11. Participant B's marker 388 is 15. Genetic Distance for that one marker: 4.
This chart from "The Harden-in-ing Newsletter", Volume 23, no. 3, September 2006 explains genetic distance in more detail. The lower the sum, the more closely participants are related; the greater the sum, the more distantly participants are related.
