John Christian ENKE was born on 24 Jul 1832 in Jenalobnitz, Thuringer, Germany.^160,208 From obit of Albert J. Enke. Between 1850 and 1865 he was a Stone mason and owned quarry, lime kiln, & brickyard in Rochester, Olmsted Co, MN.²³ John and his brother built the stone fence along the old Salem road in front of the George Baihly farm. He also assisted in building many of the old buildings in Rochester, MN. He immigrated in 1852 to New York City, NY.¹⁴⁶ Fred W, brother John C, cousin Anton Fisher, and a friend sailed to America. There was political unrest in Germany and many were leaving. After more than 90 days, the ship put in at Halifax, Nova Scotia for new sails and food, and then proceeded to New York, landing in December, 1852. Another report states that the ship landed at Quebec and they spent 2 years going to school in Coudersport, PA. John and Fred arrived in Rochester, MN on Dec 24, 1854. (Anton Fisher went to the Ozark area and raised a family.)

Fred & John were planning to find a cousin, Michael Enke, who worked for Governor Ramsey in St. Paul, MN, but ended up in Rochester. He lived in Rochester, Olmsted Co, MN between 1855 and 1865.²³ He lived in Missouri Valley, Harrison Co, IA between 1865 and 1871.¹⁴⁶ He lived in Rochester TWP, Olmsted Co, MN between 1871 and 1878.¹⁴⁶ In 1871 John and Anna moved to Rochester and Dr. W.W. Mayo operated on Anna's eyes with good results. They bought a farm near the Salem townline. In 1876 he was Chairman of the Township Board of Supervisors. In 1878, John could not keep up the payments on the house and his brother, Fred W., took over his farm. John & Anna moved to Verdi, MN. He lived in Verdi, Lincoln Co, MN between 1878 and 1914.¹⁴⁶ John and Anna Marie were said to have moved to Verdi "with his brother-in-law (William Oker) and his wife and family". Was this an Oakes family member; the same family that married Helen Enke, daughter of Charles Enke (1858)? In 1889 he was a Director, Alliance Hail Insurance Co. in Verdi, Lincoln Co, MN.²³ John helped organize Verdi Township, served as clerk of court, and was appointed Justice of the Peace. In 1891 he was appointed secretary of the R & B Commission of the State Legislature. In 1891 he also built a hotel in Verdi and ran it. He also helped establish the Lake Benton News. He lived in Elkton, Brookings Co, SD in 1914.¹⁴⁶ John and Anna went to live with their daughter, Mrs. Mary McQueen. He died on 13 Mar 1920 in Verdi, Lincoln Co, MN.^146,190 Died from a stroke.
