Wilbur was about 8 years old when his mother died in 1860. At the start of the
Civil War his older brothers enlisted. Johnny Wood operated the grist mill
south of Pittsford, MI where the St. Joseph of Maumee crosses Pittsford Rd.
Wilbur went to live with Johnny Wood and eventually ended up owning and
operating the mill. Wilbur was a hard worker and at one time owned a whole
section of land in what is now the State Game area south of of Pittsford, MI.
