Was known as "A.P.".
As a young man, he operated a line of packet boats on the Erie
Canal (Clinton's ditch crossed the Genesee River over an aqueduct that
was "the engineering wonder of the day" and built by A. P.'s father JOAB
or uncle). Later, he was toll gate keeper on a plank road "probably East
Avenue" and there he met Laura Lewis, a teacher, who was being boarded at
the toll gate.
