Will of Mary Turner

In the Name of God Amen I Mary Turner of the Town and Borough of Deal in the County of Kent widow being mindful of my Mortality Do make and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following (that is to say)

First I give and bequeath all that my Tenement or Dwelling House and the Outhouses[,] Buildings[,] Yard[,] Backside and Ground thereunto belonging with their and every of their appurtenances situate lying and being in Deal aforesaid which I hold by Lease from his Grace the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury and now in the tenure or occupation of Samuel Pettit or of his Assigns and all the Estate[,] Right[,] Title[,] Interest and Term of years which I now have or shall or may have therein at the Time of my Decease together with the Lease thereof which shall be then subsisting unto my daughters Mary Edwards of Deal aforesaid widow and Susannah Pettit wife of Samuel Pettit of Deal aforesaid Butcher equally to be divided between them my said two daughters share and share alike and they to take as tenants in Common and not as Joint Tenants and to the several and respective Executors[,] Administrators and Assigns[.]

Also I give and bequeath all that my Tenement or Dwelling House and the Outhouses[,] Buildings[,] Yard and Backside thereunto belonging with their and every of their appurtenances situate lying and being also in Deal aforesaid which I hold by Lease under the Lord of the mannor of Chamberlains now or late in the Tenure or occupation of Thomas Fish or of his Assigns and also all the Estate[,] Right[,] Title[,] Interest and Term of years which I now have or shall or may have therein at the Time of my Decease together with the Lease thereof which shall be then subsisting unto my son John Turner of Deal aforesaid[,] Gentleman[,] his Executors[,] Administrators and Assigns[.]

And as to all the rest and residue of my Goods[,] Chattels[,] Effects[,] Debts due and owing to me[,] money[,] securities for money and all other my personal Estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what kind or nature soever the same shall exist and be at the Time of my Decease not hereinafter by me otherwise disposed of (after and subject to the payment of my just debts and ffuneral expenses I give and bequeath the same and every part thereof unto my said three children Mary Edwards[,] Susannah Pettit and John Turner equally to be divided between them share and share alike[.]

And I make[,] constitute and appoint them my said three children Mary Edwards[,] Susannah Pettit and John Turner Executors of this my last will and Testament[.] And Lastly I revoke all former wills by me made[.] In Witness whereof I the said Mary Turner have to this my last Will and Testament set my Hand and Seal the fifteenth day of April in the eighth year of the Reign of King George the Third over Great Britain &c and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty eight. Mary Turner Signed sealed published and declared by the said Mary Turner as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as Witnesses thereto in her presence and at her request[.]

Whereas I Mary Turner of the town and Borough of Deal in the County of Kent widow have made my last Will and Testament in Writing bearing Date on or about the Fifteenth Day of this instant April Now I do by this codicil to be annexed to my said will give and bequeath my silver plate of all sorts and kinds whatsoever and also my mahogany desk[,] my large Bible[,] my small Quilt and also two sides prepared for making a Quilt the upper side being of divers patches and the Backside Linnen[.] And also my Feather Bed[,] Bolster and Pillows with the Quilt[,] Blankets[,] Bedstead[,] Hangings and ffurniture thereto belonging (not including sheets and pillow covers) as the same now stands in my Lodging Chamber unto my son John Turner of Deal aforesaid[,] Gentleman[,] to and for his own use and Benefit over and above what I have given to him by my said will[.]

And I do hereby ratify and confirm my said will in all other respects not hereby varied or altered and do declare this Writing and this only to be a codicil to my said will and to be accepted and taken as part thereof as fully and effectually to all Intents and Purposes as if this codicil had been actually inscribed in my said will[.] In Witness whereof I the said Mary Turner have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the twenty first day of April in the Eighth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Sire King George the Third over Great Britain[,] France and Ireland Defender of the Faith &c and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty eight. Mary Turner Signed sealed published and declared by the said Mary Turner as a codicil to be annexed to and taken as part of her last will and testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses thereto in her presence and at her request[.]

The before registered Will and Codicil annexed of Mary Turner deced was proved the sixth day of July 1768 before the Rev. George Hearne Clerk Surrogate to the Worshipful Andrew Coltee Ducarel Doctor of Laws Commissary General of the City and Diocese of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oaths of Mary Edwards[,] Susannah Pettit and John Turner the executors named in the said will they being first sworn duly to perform the same &c

Mary Cullen, second child, second daughter of mariner/pilot Richard Cullen and Mary Scarlet Cullen, was baptised at St Leonardís, the parish church of Deal, Kent, on 1 December 1695. She married John Mocket at St Leonardís, Deal, on 23 December 1723 and had two daughters, Mary and Susanna. Following the death of John Mocket she married bachelor John Turner on 11 March 1732/33 at St Leonardís, Deal. They had four sons, James, John, Richard and George. Mary Turner was buried at St Leonardís, Deal, on 23 June 1768.
