Sentencing Orders for Transportation or Hard Labour

July 1758 - July 1788

This is an index of 120 persons whose sentence was registered at the West Kent Quarter Sessions.

Orders were initially for transportation to America or His Majesty's Colonies and plantations in the Americas.
From July 1776 to July 1779, transportations were replaced by hard labour, usually for 3 years. This involved working on dredging and cleaning the River Thames. Ages are usually given in this period.
From January 1780, transportation orders were resumed and state 'beyond the seas'.
Note that the First Fleet to Australia left Portsmouth in May 1787.

The columns below are Surname, forename, the year and date of the sessions, folio, the sentence and notes.
