In the Name of God Amen
The xiii th daye of December Anno Dni A Thousand Five hundred eightye and six I William Hodsoll of Ashe in the county of Kent yeoman being weake in bodye but of sane and perfect memorye (thancks be given to the Lorde therefore) doe make this my testament and last will in manner and forme following
First my sowle departed I committ my bodye to the earthe to be buryed where it shall seeme good to my executors hereafter named hoping and assuredly trusting by the meritts of the passion of my Lorde and savyo’r Jesus Chtist to attayne to those everlasting joyes whiche he thereby hathe purchased for me and all other christen people
Item I will shalbe distributed amongst the poore people at my buriall the some of three pounds six shillings and eighte pence

Item I will give and bequeathe to Ellen my wiffe aswell those fourescore and thirtene poundes in golde nowe being in the custodye of my said wiffe as also the some of seaven poundes more to be paid to her by my executors within one moneth next after my decease
Provided allwayes and uppon this condicon notwithstanding following, that is to say, That she the said Ellen my wiffe within one and twenty dayes next after my decease doe become bounden to my nephew William Hodsoll by sufficient bond obligatorye in the some of five? Hundreth pounds of Lawfull money of England with condicon there uppon to be made to this entent ensewing viz: that the said Ellen my wiffe shall not at any time during her naturall life demande any Dowre happening to her of any lands tenements rents or hereditaments whereof I the said William nowe stand seised or at any time during the coverature or espowsall betwene me and my said wiffe Ellen have stode or bynne seised but shall permitt and suffer all and every person and persons peaceablye and quietlye to have holde and enjoye all and singular suche lands tenements rentes and hereditaments with th’appurtenances as heretofore or nowe by this present last will I have or shall convey assure will give grannte or bequeathe according to theire and every of theire severall estates and limitacons of uses or estates

Also I will give and bequeathe to my said wiffe Ellen aswell all my linnen in my saide howse and siver plate as also the full halfe parte and moitye of all other my howsehold stuff
Provided allwayes that the said Ellen doe become bounden to my said nephew William Hodsoll in forme last above remembred

Item I will give and bequeathe to my said nephew William Hodsoll aswell the other moitye and halfe parte of all my said howsehold stuff as also all my interest lease and terme of yeares whiche I have yet to come of and in certein lands and tenements called or knowne by the name of St Johns holde scituate lying and being in the said county of Kent or ells where

Item I will and give to my sister Lyffe the some of tenne pounds of Lawfull money of England to be paid to her by parcells and small porcons from time to time as she shall have neede thereof by the discreacon of my executors

Also I give and bequeathe to my neece Jone Hodsoll the some of tenne pounds of lyke money to be paid to her within one yeare after my decease

Item I will give and bequeathe to my nephews Thomas Hodsoll Robert Hodsoll and Henry Hodsoll the some of threescore pounds of like money viz: To every of them twenty pounds to be paid to every of them within one yeare after my decease

The residue of all my goodes cattells and chattells moveables and unmoveables before not given or bequeathed I will give and bequeathe to my nephews John Hodsoll and William Hodsoll aforesaid whome I make and constitute my full and wholle executors of this my present testament and last will
Also I doe by these presents revocate and renounce all other testaments and willes heretofore by me made

This is the last Will of me the said William Hodsoll made and declared the daye and yeare first above written touching and concerning the disposicon of all my landes tenements and hereditaments with thappurtenances whereof I nowe stand seised in Fee simple

Inprimis I will give and bequeathe to Ellen my saide wiffe one Annuity or yearely rent of twenty pounds of lawfull money of England yssuing and to goe for the owte of all my lands tenements and hereditaments with thappurtenances sictuate lying and being in Asshe Stansted Lighe next Tunbridge or ells where in the saide County of Kent To have and to holde the said Annuitye or yearely rent of twenty poundes to the said Ellen and her assignes for and during the naturall life of the saide Ellen from and after the decease of me the said William Hodsoll at fowre termes or Feasts in the yeare viz At the Feast of the Nativitye of our Lord Jesus Christ, The Annunciation of our blessed Ladye the Virgin the Nativitye of St John Baptist and St Michaell the Archangell or within fourtene dayes next ensewing every of the said Feasts by even and equall porcons yearely to be paid. The first payment thereof to beginne at the next Feast of the Feasts aforesaid whiche next and ymediatly shall followe the decease of me the said William Hodsoll

And if it shall happen the said Annuity or yearely rent of twenty pounds to be behinde and unpaide in parte or in all over or after any Feast and daye of payment thereof abovesaid in the whiche the same oughte to be paid being lawfully demanded That then and so often it shall and maye be lawfully to and for the said Ellen my wiffe and her assignes into all and singular the said lands tenements and hereditaments with thappurtenances to enter and distrayne and the distresse and distresses there so had taken or founde to lende … and carrye awaye and the same to deteine untill she the said Ellen and her assignes be of the said Annuitye or yearely rent together with all the arrerages thereof (if any be behinde) fully satisfied contented and paide

Provided allwayes notwithstanding and my full minde and intent is that if she the said Ellen my wiffe dye or shall at any time during her naturall life demande any dowre happening to her of any lands tenements rents or hereditaments whereof I the saide William nowe stand seised or at any time during the coverture or espowsall betwene me and my said wiffe Ellen have stood or binne? seised or shall not permitt and suffer all and every person and persons peaceably and quietly to have holde and enjoye all and singular suche lands tenements rentes and hereditaments with thappurtenances as heretofore at any time or nowe by this present last will I have or shall convey assure will give grannte or bequeathe according to theire and every of theire severall estates and limitacons of uses or eatates That then and from thensforth the said Annuity or yearely rent of twenty pounds and payment thereof shall cease and be utterly voide frustrate and of none force or effecte in the lawe anything before written to the contrary notwithstanding

Also my minde and will is that if Ellen my said wiffe doe well and truly observe and performe all and singular the condicons and provisoes in this my last will and testament menconed and all other things therein specified whiche on her parte oughte to be observed and performed according to the very true intent and meaning thereof That then and during all suche time the said William Hodsoll my nephewe and his heires executors or assignes shall well and truly content and paye or cause to be contented and paid to the said Ellen my wiffe and her assignes yearely the said Annuity or yearely rent of twenty pounds in forme above remembred and according to the forme effecte tone intent and meaning of this my last will and testament the payment whereof to be made at the nowe mansion howse of me the saide William Hodsoll in Asshe aforesaid uppon payne and forfecture of all suche giftes legaceis benefites proffitts and comodities as the said William Hodsoll my nephewe his heires or assignes should oughte or maye have by force or virtue of this my present last will and testament any thing herein conteyned to the contrary in any wise notwithstanding

Also my minde and will is that William Hodsoll my said nephewe and his heires and assignes shall after my decease aswell permitt and suffer Ellen my wiffe during her naturall life to have the free use and dwelling for her selfe and familye peaceablye and quietly in the parlo’r and Lower Chamber within the same parlo’r parcell of my messuage wherein I nowe dwell in Asshe aforesaid with free ingresse egresse and regresse in to and from the same parlo’r and Chamber as also shall license permitt and suffer the said Ellen my said wiffe from time to time during her said naturall life To have and take in and uppon the lands perteyning and belonging to the said messuage in convenient places thereuppon (making no spoyle or waste) competent and sufficient fyre hote? To be expended by her in the said Parlo’r and Chamber and no where ells uppon lyke payne or forfeiture to be incurred by the said William Hodsoll my saide nephewe and his heires as before is sett downe and imposed on him and them as aforesaid

Item I will give and bequeathe to my said nephewe William Hodsoll all my Landes tenements and hereditaments with thappurtenances scituate lying and being in Lighe next Tunbridge aforesaid in the county of Kent To have and to holde to the said William Hodsoll his heires and assignes for ever

Item I will give and bequeathe to Thomas A Coorte my servante my little messuage and one parcell of Land thereunto adioyning conteyning by estimation one roode of land nowe being in th’occupacon of the said Thomas scituate and being in Stanstede aforesaid To have and to holde to the said Thomas and his assignes for and during the naturall life of the said Thomas
And after the decease of the said Thomas I will and bequeathe the said messuage and parcell of land with thappurtenances to remaine to my saide nephewe William Hodsoll and his heires for ever

And finally I will give and bequeathe all other my landes tenements rents revercons and hereditaments with thappurtenances scituate lying and being in Stansted aforesaid or ells where in the said County of Kent to my said nephewe William Hodsoll To have and to holde to the said William Hodsoll my nephewe and to his heires and assignes for ever

In Witnes of all whiche promisses I the foresaid William Hodsoll hereunto have sett my marke and seale and have caused this my present Last Will and Testament to be redd and published in the presence of
