Will of Thomas Harrison

In the Name of God Amen. I Thomas Harrison of the Town and Borough of Deal in the County of Kent Mariner now bound out on a Voyage to the East Indies in the ship Saint George being in good Health and of sound and perfect mind memory and understanding (thanks be to God for the same) do make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say) First and principally I recommend my Soul to God that gave it and my body to the Earth, from whence it is, to be decently interred at the discretion of my executrices herein after named[.] And as for the worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I give and dispose thereof as followeth.

First I do hereby Ratify and Confirm the settlement by me made soon after my Marriage to my loving wife Ann Harrison of the Reversion or Remainder and Inheritance expectant upon the Death of my Mother Mary Ellins late Mary Harrison of and in All that Messuage or Tenement (in two Dwellings divided) with the Blacksmiths Shop Outhouses Ground and Appurtenances thereunto belonging situate lying and being in Deal aforesaid and now or late in the several Tenures or Occupations of Thomas Munden and Sarah Pope widow or their Assigns[.] And do also give and devise all other my Real Estate whatsoever unto my said wife Ann Harrison and to her Heirs and Assigns for ever

But In case it shall so happen that my said wife shall die in my Life time and I shall leave any Child or Children of her Body by me lawfully begotten living at the time of my Death
Then I give and devise the said Reversion or Remainder and also all other my real estate unto all and every such Child and Children whether Sons or Daughters equally to be divided between them (if more than one) and they to take as Tenants in Common and not as Jointenants and to their several and respective Heirs and Assigns for ever and if but one such Child the whole to such one Child and his or her Heirs and Assigns for ever

Provided always and my mind and will is, that in case my said wife shall happen to die in my Life time and there shall be no Child or Children of her body by me lawfully begotten living at the time of my decease
Then and in such case I do give and devise the said Reversion or Remainder and also all other my Real Estate unto my loving Mother in Law Ann Pye of Deal aforesaid widow and to her Heirs and Assigns for ever.

Also I do hereby give and bequeath all and singular my Ready money Plate Linnen Beding Debts Wages Goods Chattels Effects and personal Estate whatsoever (after Deduction of my ffuneral Expences and Debts by me owing) unto my said wife Ann Harrison

But in case she happen to be dead at the time of my decease and I shall leave any child or children of her body by me lawfully begotten living at the time of my death
Then I give and bequeath the same unto and amongst all and every such Child and Children equally to be divided between them (if more than one) share and share alike and if but one such Child the whole to such one Child
Provided always and my mind and will is that in case my said wife shall happen to die in my Life time and there and there shall be no child or Children of her body by me lawfully begotten living at the time of my decease Then and in such case I do give and bequeath all and singular my said personal Estate unto my said Mother in Law Ann Pye

And I do nominate constitute and appoint my said wife Ann Harrison and my said Mother in Law Ann Pye Executrices of this my last Will and Testament and do revoke and make void all former and other Wills heretofore by me made and make and declare this only to be my true and last Will and Testament.

In Witness whereof I have to this my last Will and Testament in two Sheets of Paper contained to the First Sheet thereof set my Hand and to this second and last sheet thereof my Hand and Seal the twenty fourth day of March in the sixteenth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain ffrance and Ireland King Defender of the ffaith etc. And in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty 2/3 — Thos. Harrison — Signed sealed published and declared by the said Thomas Harrison for and as his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have subscribed our Names as Witnesses in his presence and at his request —

This Will was proved at London the sixteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty six before the Right Honourable Sir George Lee Knight Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury lawfully constituted by the Oath of Ann Harrison Widow the Relict of the deceased one of the Executrices named in the said Will to whom Administration was granted of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased having been first sworn by Commission duly to administer. Power reserved to make the like grant to Ann Pye widow the other Executrix named in the said Will when she shall apply for the same. Exd.

Thomas Harrison was baptised at St. Leonard, the parish church of Deal, on 12 July 1712. He married Ann Pye at St. George, the chapel of ease to St. Leonards Deal on 21 September 1736. He died in 1756.
