Mae always worked, usually as a seamstress. After she quit, probably about war-time, she lived in Cd'A for about a year, with Jim & Mary Kay RANSOM off and on, otherwise with Mary Kay's brother Bob SMITH. Bob talked her into coming out, and thought she'd find a job and stay. She sent her trunks out ahead, and when they came, Bob opened them and displayed all her stuff, including dishes that Mae intended to give to Mary Kay. He just displayed them, but May thought he wanted them, so she gave her diamond ring to Kay.

When Eileen was born, Isabel was in the hospital, and Joe & Mae brought movers in, moved the whole family into Grandma ATHERTON's house.

When we went over to Grandma's house, Isabel would stay in the car the whole time, while Joe and the kids would visit. We always spent Thanksgiving at Mae's house, and she came to our house at Christmas.
Doc ATHERTON was in a wheel chair, was there until Mary Kay was 5 or 6.
