From time to time subscribers to the GENTUTORS mailing list will be invited to try subscription web sites before they are announced, and also new assignments before they are released to enrolled students. This page contains links to websites that are NATIONAL in scope and not specific to any particular area. Most subscribers to this list are former students who have taken the  Genealogy Basics class online through Ed2go, however it is also open to everyone. The major player in Internet searching. Genealogists will enjoy trying the text searchable "Google Books" section.

Find everything from genealogy CD's, software, family history books, old bibles and photos. Search for both 'titles' and 'descriptions'.

The most complete list of genealogy resources available. If you're looking anything specific it's a definite 'go-to. 

 

Run by the Statue of Liberty Foundation this web site has records of the 22 million passengers from 1892 to 1924. The original ship manifests are also available. It's our job to sort through and find the name they used when they arrived..

America's First Immigration Center, Castle Garden, offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Castle Garden does not host the original records.

Certainly not complete but every day more useful information is being added. A good place to look for military records. 

 

Totally free . . . watch this site grow.  This is a pilot program and is still under development but it already has many original documents. You can participate as a transcriber. Saves as PDF.

GENViewer is a software utility used to view  GEDCOM files. No need to merge or create new family trees of files - just view them in GenViewer -  reasonable cost.

Connect with people who have researched similar surnames and search all the mailing list messages for similar inquiries about your ancestors. You might find a surprise.

 

A non-profit site started in 2002 to build an Internet library, with the purpose of offering permanent access for researchers, historians, and scholars to historical collections that exist in digital format. Free hosting for digital artifacts of text, maps etc. Saves as PDF.

A collection of published genealogy and family history books many which cannot be found elsewhere. The archive includes histories of families, counties and localities, as well as books on genealogy, genealogy magazines, periodicals and gazetteers.  Saves as PDF.

A simple solution to getting all your data backed up securely. Online backup for a reasonable monthly fee for unlimited storage. It's not a question of will you lose your data—it's when. Can you afford to lose your family tree files and all the old photos you scanned?
