Thomas Rose – Research of Birth.
Clare Washbon From: "janet washbon" <kaljs@email.msn.com> Sent: Monday, April 10, 2000 Pattrick What better day to email you than a bright spring day when the snow is melting! We had 6 inches two days ago and tomorrow will be 65 degrees. We call it the Wisconsin Weather Way. If you don't like today - just wait till tomorrow. The newsletter came! Great Stuff. I wonder what is the right way to respond. I do not know if there is master tree somewhere that you would like material for. Some of the references I've tracked before and proved they are the Thomas Rose [of the first free settlers]. How do I let people know this? I have another tome I'm working on and am reluctant to type up a Rose history if one already exists. Please let me know. Regards > Clare [using Janet's e-mail]

To: Clare [using Janet's e-mail] Hi, I thought I would give a bit of background about our research group, I think this may answer your questions. We are a group of researchers that work independantly of each other but share our work so that it is not duplicated. I am the contact point for the group via email, snailmail, phone, and fax. I have recently put together a WebPage as part of the MOULD site at ROOTSWEB. On the MOULD site I have started publishing all the Genealogical information that I receive, I intend to do the same with the Rose Family. If you have any material you want published send it as narrative report from your program or as Word Text and I will publish it for you. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask. It is my wish to make sure that everybody researching this family has the opportunity to share their research with the rest of us and visa versa. We do have a master tree of the descendants of Thomas Rose of Mt Gilead (the convict, came out on the Barwell), this material has been put together by our Rose genealogist; Anne Sheppard. At the moment we only have it on hard copy, we are working on a GEDCOM copy. If you have any material to ad to this I will pass it on for you, with the intention of publishing it on this site in GEDCOM format as soon as we can. Any material you send that is relevant to the ROSE FAMILY will be put into the newsletter and onto the webpage so that everybody can access it. Any information you have relevant to Thomas of Mt Gilead will also be entered into a file know as the Collected Research, this is a huge collection of data and photos about Thomas and his descendants. This material is due to be updated, copied, bound and be made available (at cost) in the near future. Details of costing and orders will be sent out prior to printing (the updating is the hold up, I only type with three fingers). All this material is available on disc, obvoiusly it is to big to send out on one email or attachment, but I send out parts of it as people require it. An index will be posted to the WebPage shortly, and also go out in the newsletter. We do have a limited amount of material about Thomas Rose of Wilberforce (Bellona), mostly that family tree. If you wish to make contact with people researching that family, let me know and I will pass their address on to you. They also have a research group. I hope this introduction has answered your questions. If not please e-mail me. I look forward to seeing some of your material. Happy hunting. Regards, Pattrick Mould,

From: JUDY LIST 8 Greenway Court, The Greenway, HIGH WYCOMBE Bucks HP136PZ England April 2nd 2000 Dear Pattrick, How wonderful to hear from you, and some of the Thomas Rose research you have done! Many thanks. I’m afraid I do not have access to the Internet. So it’s just pen and paper the old-fashioned way! I am very pleased for you to put my letter in the next copy of your Rose Family Research newsletter. I can’t wait to hear any new information you discovered last year after the Rose Family Reunion! I am inquiring further at the Staffs Record Office re Thomas Rose born at Mosely and will let you know later. I will try to go there myself later in the year. Also, will go to the Public Record Office at Kew to research the "English Hulk Returns 1783-1803" as you suggest. It is an awkward journey for me to Kew (I don’t drive), so will have to wait until the school holidays. I have all the research on Thomas Rose’s trial at Shrewsbury, local papers, land grants, musters, ‘Barwell’ voyage, cencus etc., but not his Will. I know that there was another Thomas Rose in N.S.W. and several times have been caught out by this! I was interested to see in the Absolute Pardons 1791-1843, a few details about Thomas Rose (height, complexion etc.). I would like to see his handwriting if you have it. Eric Jarrett told me there was a letter from Thomas Rose’s father offering him money. Is this true? Also, the letter to his brother, Robert you mentioned. Is there an address? Dr Peter Reynolds, 9 The Avenue, BALMAIN, 2041, Australia, who wrote the book about William Balmain, ‘Half a Thousand Acres, Balmain’, is in touch with me re John William Henderson, and I am trying to find out more about him. Peter is bringing out a booklet this year about John Balmain, William’s cousin 0 you might be interested in contacting him. I am most interested in Thomas Rose’s large families! The Perkins children seemed to feature largely in his Will! What is that story I wonder!? A few corrections to your notes: 1)William Balmain and Margaret Dawson had a baby girl, Annie (Nancy) on Norfold Island born May 29th 1794. She died in Sydney on Sept. 4th 1797 when Jane, her sister, was only 5 months old. 2)William Balmain was buried at St Giles-in-the-Fields, Holborn, (not St Andrew Holborn). There is a plaque to him erected last year in the church. I have been there several times and seen the Burial Registers. 3)William Balmain and Margaret Dawson had 4 children altogether. I am still looking for the 4th child, a girl, born on the day Balmain was buried Nov. 20th 1803. I cannot find her birth or death – OR birth and dead of Margaret Dawson – later called Henderson. My cousin, Malcolm Bearer’s book about the Balmain’s is coming out this year. It is very long! – partly a diary and partly a story – not all true!! Malcolm died in Feb. 1999, but he was as keen as I am on the family history! Looking forward to hearing from you again, and will let you know of any research I do. Again with many thanks, Best wishes JUDY LIST

11 April 2000 Dear Judy,
I received your letter of the 2nd April today, good to hear from you and I’m grateful to receive the information you have forwarded. I have put your letter in the Rose Newsletter, you should have received it by now and that material should answer a lot of your questions, although we have a lot more material on the Perkins’ family etc. As I have probably mentioned, we have a huge file on Thomas Rose that is presently being updated with the Diana Giles material. When that is done, I will print and bind it and it will be available to all the researchers at my cost (I can’t cover this cost myself all the time). We are all on tenterhooks waiting to see how you go at the Staffs Record Office with your inquiries about Thomas Rose from Mosley. In regard to the English Hulk returns, Rosie Stevens has volunteered to do that for the resent. Some of our researchers have suggested that you may be able to investigate Thomas’s trade, some feel that there would be lists of Baker’s apprenticeships somewhere and that you are probably positioned best to do this. Regarding the other Thomas Rose (of Wilberforce), we have that Family Tree here if you need any information. In regard to his handwriting, we do have a letter alleged to be from his brother, Robert, unfortunately it is a transcription, not in his hand and does not have an address. That will be part of the material I will send to you. In regard to Peter Reynolds, members of this Research Group have been in touch with him. They have researched the William Balmain book and intend to do the same with the John Balmain material. Thanks very much for the material you have sent in regard to William Balmain and Margaret Dawson, it will be inserted in the collected material in the William Balmain section. We would be interested in further information about Malcolm Deaver’s book about the Balmains, sorry to hear he passed away. You should be hearing from the Rose Geneologist, Ann Sheppard in the near future, she has been very impressed with your information. Once again, great to hear from you and for your new information, looking forward to any comments etc., you may have about the last newsletter and naturally, keen to hear about any further research on Thomas. Regards, Pattrick Mould

From: Judy List, 8 Greenway Court, The Greenway, HIGH WYCOMBE Bucks HP136PZ England April 24th 2000 Dear Pattrick, Very many thanks for the wonderful Newsletter of Thomas Rose (April 2000). I am thrilled to have it, and cannot believe, that after so many years of researching Roses, I have found you and your Rose Family Research group, at last! Also thank you for you letter of April 11th. I have been away to the West Coast for a break and start school again tomorrow! Please let me know the best way to pay you for all this exciting information – will a cheque be all right? I did contact a researcher in Staffordshire to work on the Thomas Rose of Moseley. She says it would be a long and complicated work and would charge a lot! So I’ve left it for the moment until I have checked with you that there are no more clues to his brother Robert etc. etc. I think I will try to do this research myself. Glad to hear that Rosie Stevens will do the research on the Hulks. I have looked over the years at the baker’s apprenticeships but have not found Thomas Rose so far. I think I told you I visited Newport with a local historian (when I researched in Shropshire several years ago) and she pointed out a very old cottage with a large chimney and oven, which she thought had been a bakery. So I imagined our Thomas working there! It is quite near the canal, and there were many windmills in the area in those days – so I expect Thomas learned a lot from his youth about water and windmills. I was surprised to know that Thomas may have had a brother Robert –, as that name does not seem to appear at all among his many children! Although that doesn’t automatically follow that it should! Just a thought. Malcolm Beaver’s book is only being produced in a very small way – about 6 or 7 copies only. David Roe from Scotland (a friend of Malcolm’s) is publishing it and he came to Balmain to see Peter Reynolds in March – Peter may be able to help you on this. JOHN WILLIAM BALMAIN I am very keen to find out more about his life – do you know who is writing the book about his family? I wrote to the Archivist at Middlesex Hospital, last year, and the only information was this: JOHN WILLIAM BALMAIN was appointed a Dresser and apprentice to Mr. Cartwright’s Surgical Team on 31st March 1817 for twelve months. He then became a Pupil Apothecary in 1819 and a pupil to Dr Southey at the Middx. Hospital in 1821 (Dr Southey was the brother of a famous poet Robert Southey) Dr Henry Herbert Southey MD 1782 – 1865. Physician Middx Hospital 1815 – 1827, Physician to George IV 1823, and Queen Adelaide 1830. I am so interested to read the Newsletter and all the names of the various researches – Lorraine Galloway’s connection with her grandmother’s birth at Coseley, Staffs looks interesting. I will look into that. Anne Sheppard, Thos. Rose stole the boat etc. when did that happen? I am intrigued with Dianne Giles’ notes on the Perkins family. And loved the account of the mount Gilead Estate and Windmill. It is a wonderful newsletter, and must have taken you weeks and months to work on. It will certainly keep me busy reading and digesting for a long time! I enclose photos of my Rose connections for interest. Will be in touch and hopefully have some news and results for you. Again with many thanks, Best wished, Judy List. PS Let me know how much I owe you. Photo; Julia Mary Henderson b 11.07.1836, Sydney. Dear Judy, Thank you very much for your very informative and encouraging letter of the 24th April last. I apologize for not getting back to you earlier; I have been a bit sidetracked lately. Firstly I got onto a new mailing list on the Internet that was very demanding but very rewarding; I have gleaned an incredible amount of information about the Mould’s. Secondly, my partner got sick in early May, she has had to have major surgery, she is now recovering well and hopefully she will be back at work soon. In regard to our incurred expenses, we don’t have a membership fee as such. But very fortunately people participating in the group send me a cheque every now and then, and that seems to cover our mailing and copying costs, obviously I don’t charge for my research time or the time taken putting the newsletter together. Any support is greatly appreciated, bank cheque draw in my favour in Australia dollars are preferably, cash is never knocked back, but not encouraged. I have had the answers in regard to employing researchers, until someone donates some real money; we will have to poke along on our own resources. Rosie Stevens isn’t have a lot of success with the research on the Hulks as yet, but you never know. I was interested in your comments about baker’s apprenticeships, old cottage with a large chimney and oven, which she thought had been a bakery. many windmills. In regard to his brother Robert, we have not put to much store on that information at this stage. We feel our research should be centred around Birmingham first. In regard to the Malcolm Beaver, the Balmain Family, Thos. Rose stole the boat etc. I suggest you should write directly to Anne Sheppard. Her address is: 85 Homebush Road, Strathfield, NSW 2135, Australia. Thank you very much for your photos, I will attempt to put as many as I can in the newsletter. I am sure the photos make that material much more readable, but I also have to be careful about how much colour ink I use, it’s very expensive and colour photocopying is out of the question. Once again, thank you for your encouragement and support - Pattrick Mould.

Barbara Osborn From: barbara osborn To: Partick Mould Sent: Wednesday, April 19, 2000 6:08 AM Dear Pattrick Thank you for your last Rose news letter. I was able to login to your web site and save. But I must confess I did read your copy in more detail. So in the future I will visit your site, so this it will save you posting. Thank you for thinking of me. I would like to make a few observations about your search for Thomas Judith List: - "At Moseley Staffs. 1773 Mar 3 Thomas son of Joseph Rose Moseley bapt." and your reply to her referring to Morseley Staffs. In my first contact with you I searched for only a few Thomases, as I was unsure of his birth year. One was "Thomas Rose son of Joseph 14th Mar 1773 Saint Mary Moseley by Birmingham Worcs" Can I point out that Moseley is a district of Birmingham and that it could possibly have been in the County of Worcestershire during those days.(Did you receive my post with the maps of Warwickshire Moseley is just south east of Edgbaston.) Also there were others born in and around Birmingham at that time. If I'm not treading on any ones toes, I will do another search Say three years either side of 1773. This is from an I G I software in the library and it will show all births in England at a date requested, hopefully I will be able to get a print out. Also if your Thomas is the one in Moseley I will be able to obtain a copy of the parish records for you. Also reading your last news letter, re-lease from John Burgess to Thomas Rose:-"farm & premises known by the name Blackheath in the district of Evan etc, then the lease for Obediah Ikin (lovely name) to Thomas Rose:- farm & premises known by the name of Derrintend situated in the district of Evan. Are these the same pieces of land, if so was it renamed e g Blackheath to Derrintend. Because in Birmingham there is an old area called Deritend. I wondered whether Thomas had renamed it in memory of his home place as this is not far from Moseley. Well that's all for now I imagine that you will be basking in the sun soon ,we are having some strange weather one day its like spring and the next it snows, keeps us on our toes. Best wishes Barbara

Hi, Could you shed some light on the naming of these properties, this sounds like a very strong lead. This could only have come about because you shared your research! Thank you from us all

To: Barbara Osborn <barbara@bosborn.freeserve.co.uk> Hi Barbara, Thank you very much from all of us, your information appears to have turned a random research into a strong lead thank you very much. "So in the future I will visit your site, so this it will save you posting" - thanks for that, I have taken you off the snail mail list (it is very expensive), and I will put your on the list of people I email to inform that a new newsletter has been put on. I received your letter with the maps of Warwickshire Moseley etc and I have located it just south east of Edgbaston. I will share this information with everybody in the next newsletter, thank you. "If I'm not treading on any ones toes, I will do another search say three years either side of 1773." - Search away, we are all very grateful for your input. "This is from an I G I software in the library and it will show all births in England at a date requested" - I am not familiar with that LDS program, can you please tell me the name/description, or is it one of the options on the new IGI gallery. "Also if your Thomas is the one in Moseley I will be able to obtain a copy of the parish records for you." - Brilliant, firstly we will have to identify if he is the guy we are after by eliminating later marriages, deaths etc in England, then trying to locate anybody researching the same line for verification if possible etc. "Thomas Rose:-"farm & premises known by the name Derrintend etc" - I have written to Dianne Giles who originally researched this information, to see what she could determine! This could be very eventful. "I imagine that you will be basking in the sun soon", what a joke, even in sunny Queensland we have a winter, and its just coming on us something awful, forecast down to 13 degrees tonight - disgusting! Hope to hear from you soon, Regards, Pattrick Mould,
