Information on the newspapers of the region, Dudley, Bilston etc are:

Wolverhampton Newspapers (information as of May 1998)

A couple of recent queries have asked about local newspapers in Wolverhampton and Tipton. The main local evening paper is the Express & Star which is still going strong. It started life as the Midland Counties Evening Express (1874-84), then became the Evening Express & Star (1884-9) and finally the Express & Star (1889-date). The paper has pretty good coverage around the Black Country area and Wolverhampton Archives dept have a very good archive of the paper on microfilm.

The E & S has a website at http://www.westmidlands.com/EStar/Default.htm The other main paper was a weekly, the Wolverhampton Chronicle which is now defunct but started much earlier in 1789. Dudley Library has a run of these on microfilm from 1830-1866 which may help with Tipton. There were many other papers in the area but most of them tended to be short-lived. The only one I can find with Tipton in the title was the 'Tipton & Great Bridge Times' which apparently only lasted one year (1889).

    A couple of observations:

Looking through old newspapers on microfilm is very time consuming and wearing on the eyes. For inquests it helps if the death was particularly tragic or gruesome which tends to increase the size of the report considerably (the 'Sun' didn't invent sensationalist reporting!). My grandfather and his brother were working as cupolamen on a steel furnace (at the hot end) when his brother slipped into the furnace and was cremated alive, the inquest report in the E & S took up nearly half a page in full gory detail. Even with the date of death it took several hours to find the report which was some days later.

Rachel Edith MOULD and RICHARD CORBETT had the following children:

  • +8 i. WILLIAM HORACE CORBETT.

    +9 ii. FREDERICK RICHARD CORBETT.

    +10 iii. Mabel Edith CORBETT.

11 iv. HAROLD CORBETT was born on 9 Aug 1908 in Stafford, Tipton, England. He died on 11 Jul 1926 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.3 Harold died of drowning at Magazine Beach in Cambridge, Mass. It was on a Sunday in July. The body was not found until the next day when some one reportedley bumped in to the body underwater. The story of the drowning was reported in the Monday, July 12 Boston Post newspaper on page 7. The paper has gone out of business but the story can be researched in the Boston Public Library microfilm section.

The informant for the death certificate was a "Edith Sedgwick". There is no knowledge as to who Edith Sedgewick is but the possibility exists that she might have been Edith Mould Corbett. In any case if she was not a relative then Horace was the logical one to be the informant. This needs to be researched in the Boston City Directories.

At the time of his death, Harold was living at the same residence as his brother, Horace, 48 Ivey Street, Boston, Mass. He is in the Corbet/t Study Group as no. 31739.

12 v. LESLIE CORBETT was born about 1912 in Stafford, Tipton, England. He died about 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts. Note suggests Leslie died of appendicitis in Boston. No ref to a date but estimate in the early 30's. He had a burst appendix and died of peronitis. He is in the Corbet/t Study Group as no. 31737.

+13 vi. Dorothy C. (aka Maude) CORBETT.

+14 vii. LAWRENCE JOHN GILBERT CORBETT.

  • She was married to ROGER E. MCKAY on 22 Jun 1931 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. There are many questions as to the marital status of Edith Rachel Mould in the 1922 to 1931time period. There is documentation in the various communications between Roger MacKay and Rachel and the Veterans Administration.

A Marriage License number, A45747, was issued by the office of the recorder of deeds of Jackson County at Kansas City Missouri on 22 June 1931 to Roger Edward MacKay of the county of Los Angeles California and to Rachel Edith "SEGAR" of Suffolk County, Massachusetts. The marriage was performed on 22 Jun 1931. The Recorder of Deeds for the county of Jackson in the state of Missouri acknowledged the certification of said marriage as being the same as recorded in Book 125, page 35, the 19th of January, 1943.

In an affidavit to the VA, sworn to on 10 Sept 1943, Rachel deposes that she has been legally married only one time, viz; to Roger E. Mackay on June 22, 1931. Affiant further states that she lived with one Charles Edward Segar under the relationship of man and wife from 1922 to 1927, and that during all of this period they were domiciled and continually resided in the state of Massachusetts. During the latter part of 1927, the said Charles Edward Segar deserted and absented himself from affiant and that she had not seen him since that time; that she has been reliably informed that he is now deceased.

The words in that document appear to disavow any reference to her prior marriage to Richard Corbett in Dudley England on 19 April 1903. This adds more fuel to the fire. What really happened to the relationships of Richard Corbett and Charles Edward Segar?

ROGER E. MCKAY was born on 2 Sep 1891 or 1892 in Binghamton, New York. The Veterans Administration records that were furnished per his case record state the place of Roger has been Binghamton, New York, Pittsburgh, Penna and Port Crane, New York. My guess is that it was Binghamton. He died on 5 Dec 1965 in Los Angeles County, LA, Calif. Per the California death index, Roger's death certificate registration number is 32570, State file number 137898. Death was in county code "70", LA county. He has reference number SSN 573-09-6690. The California marriage index has Roger getting re-married to a Marie Doyle or Robey on 9 Nov. 1961 in Riverside County. The registrar number is 1896, State file 95559.

Refer to letter number 274/27 from Department of Veterans Affairs dated 4/7/1995.

In that letter, they identify Roger's file number as "C. 2 588 908". They have forwarded a resquest for information to the VA Regional Office, Federal Bldg, 110000 Wilshire Blvd, LA, CA 90024 for recall of those records.

Roger had Army serial number 6097079 and he served in several places including Panama and March Field in Riverside, CA, where he was discharged on March 12, 1930.

Roger alledgely served in the US Army in World War I from 19 Sep 1917 until 14 Aug 1919, under the name Lake E Buckingham, serial number 1982803.

A letter to the US District Court in February 1999 requested information about a trial involving a "forgery situation", resulted in a reply stating that there is no trace of any records relative to Roger. A certificate states that the records searched covered the period 1943 to 1999.
