The Descendants of Paul Rhodes

When the ship Brotherhood arrived at the port of Philadelphia
on November 3, 1750, among its passengers was my earliest
known Rhodes ancestor by the name of Paul Roth.
Naturalization records reveal that Paul Roodt of Frederick
County, Maryland was naturalized during the November 22-24
session of 1773. Upon his arrival in America, Paul quickly
began acquiring rich farm property in his new homeland.
He and his family moved to Pennsylvania in 1783 where he
settled in what is now Blair County, planting deep roots
in Huston Township and North Woodbury Township. Paul and
his wife Barbara had five children; Jacob Rhodes, Sr.;
Elizabeth Rhodes; Abraham Rhodes, Sr; Daniel Rhodes, Sr.;
and Christian Rhodes.
Of these five siblings, I trace my direct ancestry
back to Daniel Rhodes, Sr. who was the father of Frederick
Rhodes, my GGG Grandfather. Frederick Rhodes was one of the
first Mennonite church leaders in Blair County. He was
ordained as a deacon, then a minister, and in 1800, he was
elevated to the office of Bishop. Historical references
also note that the town of Fredericksburg in Bedford County
was named after Frederick Rhodes. His stone house near
Fredericksburg bears the date of 1816 on the wall.
His son, Daniel Rhodes, was the father of John Shriver
Rhodes, my great grandfather. An old photograph shows
him with his wife, Anne Shriver Rhodes. His son, Elmer Emerson
Rhodes, was an engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad. If you
visit the Pennsylvania Railroader's Museum in Altoona, you
may be able to locate his picture; he was photographed
after having tested an experimental locomotive. He is pictured
here as a young man. My father, Vincent Glenn Rhodes bore a
striking resemblance.
