There is more to the story than James being a pauper. According to the listings in the book "Cabell County VA/WV Order Book: Overseers of the Poor, 1814-1861" edited by Carrie Eldridge,
| pg 64 | 4 June 1832 | Elizabeth Sexton allowed $20 to support her son James |

| pg 151 | 31 Mar 1852 | $20 allowed for support of James Sexton until March 31st, 1853 |
| pg 154 | 4 Mar 1853 | $29 allowed for support of James H. Sexton, order to John D. Holdryde |
| pg 162 | 31 Mar 1854 | $20 allowed for support of James H. Sexton (Margin - dead) |
It would appear by these entries, especially the entries made to Elizabeth, that James was incapable of making an independent living - meaning some sort of physical or mental incapacitation.
According to "Cabell County Death Records 1853-1859", KYOWVA, page 18, Sexton James d. 14 Mar 1855 at Mud River age 54y 5 mos 9 dys. Son of William and E. Saxton b. Greenbrier Co. Death reported by brother John Sexton. Margin note: Never married.
This seems to tie John, Jacob and James together as brothers, all three of them to William and Elizabeth, and to tie William with Elizabeth Black and to Greenbrier County.
