The Black Family of Greenbrier County, WVa
|
4. Catherine Sexton
Catherine Sexton was born 9 April 1806 in Greenbrier County, (West) Virginia, and died 28 September 1876 in White County, Indiana. She married William Jordan, Jr., son of William Jordan, Sr., 19 March 1826 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia. He was born 17 December 1803 in Kanawha County, (West) Virginia, and died 5 May 1876 in White County, Indiana.
Catherine is presumed to be the child of William and Elizabeth Black Saxton. She appears in no Virginia censuses. There was no enumeration for the William Saxton entry in Cabell County for 1820 and by 1830 Catherine was already married ("Cabell Marriages 1807-1850" edited by Carrie Eldridge), and William Jordan is nowhere to be found in Cabell County. That is because by 1830 they are already in Indiana.
The fourth child of William and Catherine Jordan was Sarah Jane Jordan. She married John Francis Marion Porter 29 January 1852 in White County, Indiana. After some years they moved to Page County, Iowa. A 1909 book, "History of Page County, Iowa", contains a biographical sketch for John Porter which stated, "…the lady of his choice being Miss Sarah Jane Jordan, a native of Tippecanoe county, Indiana." This indicates the William Jordan family was in Tippecanoe County, Indiana by 1833, when Sarah was born. Later census records identified all but the first born child as being born in Indiana, including Talitha Cumi who was born 11 June 1828.
According to family records, William, Catherine and their newborn son moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana in the autumn of 1827 with a group of at least 15-20 friends and relatives, including William's parents, William and Blanche Jordan, and several of his brothers and sisters and their families. William and Catherine squatted in Tippecanoe County for the next two years before he registered some land with the government.
This 1830 census record in Tippecanoe County is that of William and Catherine's family - Wabash Township, page 200, line 13:
Head of household: William Jourden
1 male under 5 years
1 male of 20 years and under 30
1 female under 5 years
1 female of 20 years and under 30
|
Also, just three lines further down on this same census page, line 16:
Head of household: William Jourden
1 male of 20 years and under 30
1 male of 50 years and under 60
1 female of 50 years and under 60

An 1888 book, "Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana", contains a biography for a James Jordan of that county on pages 371-372. It states, "James Jordan, deceased, who was one of the pioneers of Tippecanoe County, was born in Virginia, in 1796, a son of William Jordan, who also settled in this county in an early day, where he died … He (James) first entered Government land in Wabash Township near Hebron, where he made his home for a short time, and later entered land from the Government in Wabash Township, where he made a homestead and there reared his children." James and his family are found on the previous page of the 1830 Wabash Township census, page 199, line 16:
Head of household: James Jourden
1 male of 20 years and under 30
2 females under 5 years
1 female of 20 years and under 30

William and Catherine are in the 1840 Shelby Township (near the Wabash Township line), Tippecanoe County, Indiana census (page 506) and then by 1850 are found in the White County, Indiana census (page 413). On 7 June 1844, William and Catherine moved north into White County, Indiana, where they became very successful farmers, and lived with their family until their deaths. William died on 5 May 1876 following a lengthy illness; and Catherine followed that same year on 28 September.
Nothing stated thus far has definitively linked Catherine to the William and Elizabeth Black Saxton family unit. Catherine being present in Cabell County at a time when only one Sexton family is present is one piece of circumstantial evidence. Additionally, another piece of circumstantial evidence is the naming of their second born as Talitha Cumi. That is indeed an unusual name, but it is not unique within the Sexton family. Brother Andrew named their sixth born child as Telitha Cuma Sexton, born in 1843 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia. Again, not overwhelming evidence but certainly well worth noting.
Additionally, Jacob Sexton lived with Catherine when he first moved to Indiana; one of Catherine's grandchildren was named Jacob Sexton Jordan; and in old correspondence the Sexton boys called Catherine "sister". Sources are Jacob's obituary and family letters, all of which are included in the book "We Take This Opportunity to Write" by Jerry Jordan and published by Heritage Books in Spring of 2005.
