6.  Adam B. Sexton

Adam B. Sexton was born Abt. 1815 in Cabell County, (West) Virginia, and died 8 October 1862 in Wayne County, Illinois.  He married Eliza Harshbarger Bef. 1838 in (West) Virginia.  She was born 26 December 1816 in (West) Virginia, and died 9 May 1903 in Franklin County, Illinois.

In the 1832 PPT entry under Andrew, it was noted that Elizabeth had another male above the age of 16 in her household.  This is in addition to John, William and Andrew who had already struck out on their own.

Notice that the years 1836 and 1837 show John Sexton with another male over the age of 16 years.  Since John was not yet married, this would indicate John, rather than Elizabeth, was enumerated as head of household and yet another sibling was about to make an entry to the adult world.

Adam seemed to be migratory by nature.  In 1840 he purchased 525 acres along Trace Creek from George Hughart (Cabell County Deed Book 8, page 61).  Then in 1848 Adam B. and Eliza Sexton sell this 525 acre tract to John Powell (Cabell County Deed Book 9, page 516).  In 1850 Adam B. and Eliza are living in District 38 of Mason County, (West) Virginia with children Elizabeth, James M., Milton R., Madison L., and Jefferson H.  Then on 2 September 1853 Adam B. Sexton purchased two tracts of 40 acres each in section 21 and two tracts of 40 acres each in section 28 in Wayne County, Illinois (Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales Database).  In the 1860 Wayne County, Illinois census, page 238, Adam and wife Eliza are shown along with children Milton R., Madison L., Jefferson, and Zachariah.  In 1860, Andrew and Mary Sexton and family are close by, on page 239 of the Wayne County, Illinois census.

Eliza filed and received a pension request for Adam B. Sexton in 1865 for herself and minor son Zachariah Sexton.  Eliza is listed as the widow of Adam B. Sexton, most likely confirming that he was killed in, or as a result of, the Civil War.  He served as a private in Company D of the Illinois 5th Cavalry.  According to Adam's pension papers, he died 8 October 1862 in Wayne County, Illinois.  He was discharged 27 September 1862 in St. Louis, Missouri.  He died from chronic diarrhea as a consequence of a femoral hernia.
