Hill Cemetery, Bruffey's Creek, Pocahontas Co., WV

The Hill Cemetery is located on the brow of a ridge between the Hills Creek Valley and the Bruffeys Creek Valley in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. The cemetery is about 200 yards east of the original home site of Richard Hill. Most of the hand-made grave markers are sandstone from the hillside west of the Emmanuel Church along Bruffeys Creek. John Bruffey was the stone carver who did most of the work. He must have prepared several stones in advance as there are stones in the cemetery with decorative carvings but no names or dates on them. He died in 1874.

A stone indicates that Cornelius Ohover was the first person buried there. Nothing is remembered other than he was an Irishman, and no dates appear on the stone. The oldest dated stone appears to be for Jesse Morrison, died 1805, the son of James Morrison and Elizabeth Callison.

Richard Hill was first known to be in what is now Pocahontas County in 1786. The Greenbrier County Personal Property Tax 1787 List “B” indicates that he owned two horses. He was married by that time and probably owned land. He purchased land from William and Sarah Renick in 1792 (240 acres) and 1799 (350 acres).
