Descendants of William Collum

Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM1 COLLUM was born Abt. 1745, and died Bef. 1810.

Notes for WILLIAM COLLUM:

1790 Newberry District South Carolina, Township, page 55

2 males 16 & upward including head of house

6 males under 16,

1 female including head of house.

William is the father of all the Collum boys that has been found in the Edgefield District of South Carolina. The lines were changed as years went by. William is the only Collum in South Carolina in 1790, spelled Colum in the census.  The ages of the children fit the ages of Uriah, David, Solomon, and John. Uriah being the oldest & John the youngest.

William's name spelled Colom

1800 Edgefield District Township, page 170

2 males               0-10

1 male               26-44

2 female              0-10

1 female             16-25

William name spelled Colom

This census indicates that there is another girl born, which we may never know who she is.

You will notice that William is now in Edgefield County with Uriah.

On this same page is Nathan Norris, who plays a big part in our family. Uriah and Solomon sign papers as witnesses on a deed or will of Nathan, this makes me even more convinced that William is the father of all.   By this time, Uriah had a family and was also in the same area, along with other names that tie into the family, Shealy's, Reynolds, Sawyer's, Fallaw's Brodie's and the Jeter's.

Children of WILLIAM COLLUM are:

2.               i.    DAVID2 COLLUM, b. Nov 1774, North Carolina; d. Abt. 1814.

3.              ii.    URIAH COLLUM, b. Abt. 1775, Rowan, North Carolina; d. 1808.

4.             iii.    SOLOMON COLLUM, b. 1776, South Carolina; d. Abt. 1825, Hall, Georgia.

iv.    WILLIAM COLLUM, b. 1778, South Carolina.

                 v.    HENRY COLLUM, b. 1779, South Carolina.

5.             vi.    JOHN COLLUM, b. 1780, South Carolina; d. 1844, Crawford, Georgia.

4.  SOLOMON2 COLLUM (WILLIAM1) was born 1776 in South Carolina, and died Abt. 1825 in Hall, Georgia.  He married (1) MARGARET COFFNER Jan 1800 in South Carolina.  She was born 1778 in South Carolina.  He married (2) MARGARET MOOREHEAD Abt. 1815 in Edgefield District, South Carolina.  She was born 1778 in South Carolina, and died Aft. 1860 in Hall, Georgia.

Notes for SOLOMON COLLUM:

Solomon first 1799 Edgefield County South Carolina; witness to Agnes Norris will;   With Uriah Collum as other witness.  He next shows in 1810 Census of Mississippi,  Amite County; wife, one daughter and two sons under 10 years. He next shows again in 1817-19 Edgefield South Carolina selling land with his wife named Margaret.  Also Marriage record Solomon Collum and Moorhead.  He next shows in 1820 Hall County Georgia Census. David Collum was in Wilkes County Georgia in 1799 with Rachel Smith. Uriah Collum was in Richmond County Georgia tax records 1793.  I believe Uriah, David, and Solomon are Brothers but only speculation.  I also believe Solomon was married at least two times. The first four children born by first wife, Disey and Dicie by second wife, and one female and John Collum born 1823 Peggy is Margaret, she is the widow of Solomon Collum.  Also John Collum of Crawford Co. Georgia 1840 Census sold his property in Edgefield S.C. same time as Solomon. Edgefield South Carolina Marriages Solomon Collum and Moorehead Married 1817.

1800 Edgefield District, I found a James or Hugh (almost unreadable) Moorehead. It was the only one in the area of the Collum's which makes me believe that this could have been Margaret (Peggy's) father.

Collum & Wife etal vs Benj. Gregory & Wm Jeter, Administer. - Decretal Order. The defendant William Jeter as administer of the intestate, put in suit for collection a note under seal against the Complainants Collum and Glenn for $692.]/4 (sic) for articles purchased by the Complainant Collum at the sale of the Intestate made by the Administers and thereupon recovered a judgment. The Complainant Collum intermarried with the widow of the intestate and was entitled to receive her share of the personal estate. He offered his wife's share as a discount to the action on the sealed note; but this was objected to by the Deft Jeter and therefore could not be allowed at law. The Complainant then filed this bill for an injunction and an account of the personal estate of the Intestate. The Conr to whom the case was referred reported the sum of $711.52 3/4 as due the Complainants Collum and wife for her distributive share of the estate. It appears that the whole amount of principal and interest due at this time on the judgment at Law William Jeter Administer of Eleazor Jeter, Deceased.. vs Vincent E. Collum and Robert Glenn is $795.02 1/4. The Complainants will be entitled to have a credit of $711.52 3/4 on that judgment. It is therefore ordered and decreed that upon the Complainants paying to the Deft William Jeter the balance of the judgment after deducting Mrs. Collum's share of the personal estate, the Deft Jeter do enter satisfaction upon the said Judgment and that he be perpetually enjoined from enforcing the said Judgment at law except as to the balance which is ascertained to be $82.2 1/4 (sic).

Note: Capt. William Jeter and Benjamin Gregory were appointed administrators with the will annexed of the estate of Eli/Ely/Eleazer Jeter who died on 8 Feb. 1822, leaving a nuncupative will in which he left all of his property to his wife Sally Jeter during her life or widowhood to be used for the benefit of his children. At Sally's death or remarriage, the property was to "be secured" to his children. By 1824 Sally had remarried to Vincent E. Collum, and, by consent of all parties, the will was set aside, and the estate handled as if Ely Jeter had died intestate. The estate was finally settled in 1828 after this case went through Equity Court. The final payment was made to L. B. Jeter as guardian of the minor children. This case is a good example of the way in which Equity records can supplement estate files - Ely Jeter's children were not named in his estate file, but they were named in the Equity case. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
