The Vulture was a paddle frigate (2nd Class) built at Pembroke Dyd. in 1843 as a CYCLOPS Class ship. Alfred King Lewis was a carpenters mate. These ships logs have been transcribed with regard to the activities of the ships carpenters as well as other incidents of interest. The entire logs are available from the Public Record Office, Kew Gardens, London. The following logs are included:

20 Feb: Wm Braxton, carpenter joined (from Trafalgar)
10 March: Alfred Lewis, age 25 joined from Styx as Carpenters Mate. He was the 16th rating to sign on. He was to begin 1 June 1845 and given 2 months advance of 4.10.0. He joined at Sheerness. Also from the Styx was James Miles, a stoker.
18 Mar: sheerness, Capt Martin until April when McDougall took over.

27 Feb 1845: Vulture commissioned at 11:30am by Mr. John Cater, master for Capt John McDougall in the basin
8 June - ship left Sheerness at 3pm. Had problem with hand lead getting caught in the paddle. Went down Queens channel passing Reculver church to N. Foreland lighthouse in heavy head sea. Exchanged colours with Dutch ship before noon and passed Dungeness on past Hastings and Beachy Head. Saw Gwens Light at 10:15pm Anchored on Monday at Spithead. Return to Top

11 Sep 1845 - Thursday 3 pm rounded the Cape of Good Hope then moored at Simons Bay. The carpenters spent time caulking with the crew from the "Winchester"
24 Oct - 3pm. Carpenters wedging masts as required at Port Louis
24 Nov - Trinicombe Ceylon. Stopped for stores and coaling. Mount Formosa, Cobra Island
10 Dec - Singapore
15 Dec - Carpenters repair reef head while at 5 Fathom Bay, Pula Condone
24 Dec - wash clothes. sent party on shore to cut down timber. Wm Dyer (supernumerary boy 2nd class) was killed by a tree falling on him. At 4:30pm he was committed to the deep at sunset.
25 Dec - 10am muster. Landed liberty men, opened rum and beef and pork. Captain gave the order to give out half allowance of bread.
30 Dec - saw first Chinese junk

Monday, 16 Nov. 1846: HONG KONG

6am. turned wheels. sent 2 carpenters to Daedalus.
7am sent cooper to dock yard; Daedalus took the guard
9:30am mustered at quarters. exercised a gun crew. employed picking oakum and requisite. Sail makers making new hammock cloths.
noon. water outboards. 42 men employed picking oakum. Sail maker and party making hammock cloths and ? Rev John Newton (stoker) from hospital. put 49 1/2 lbs of pork with coppers came out 18 lbs.
Sunset up boats. 11 pm

17 Nov.

Requisitioned fresh beef, 157 lbs, vegetables 70 lbs.
9:30am mustered at quarters and exercised foremost guns crew. People employed picking oakum. Sail maker and party making new hammock cloths and seamens baps?.
Noon. Water on board, 41 1/4 tons. Employed picking oakum. Carpenters making ladder for after hatchway. received three blacksmiths from HEA steamer, Pluto.

Wednesday. 18th Nov.

received fresh beef 153 lbs, vegetables 76lbs. Sailed an English barque. HM Daedalus relieved the guard
9:30 mustered at quarters, exercised a guns crew. employed picking oakum and as requisite. boatswain at dock yard drawing stores
noon - water on board, 55 tons. employed picking oakum for "Minden". Carpenters making ladder for after hatchway and painting paddle box slat.

Friday. 20 Nov.

Washed clothes. Turned the wheels. Sent Cooper, JW Stow (lUFS Engineer) and 3 blacksmiths to dock yard. 9:30. mustered at quarters. exercised small arm men with muskets. Carpenters employed making ladder, caulking front paddle box boat
noon- water on board 53 1/2 tons. employed picking oakum
2pm arrives HMB Wolverine. Carpenters making ladder and caulking port paddle box boat. Turned rum 57-71 gall. put 54 lbs of pork into coffers came out 24 lbs.

Saturday, 21 Nov.

Received fresh beef 152 lbs, vegetables 76 lbs.
6am sent cooper to dock yard.
6:30 aired bedding. employed scraping masts and booms and cleaning decks below. Carpenters making ladder and caulking front paddle box boat.
noon- water on board, 52 tons. employed picking oakum and as requisite.
2pm sailed HMB Wolverine, took the guard per signal. Rec. a memorandum dated 10 Sept, 1846 for reducing the price of scrap.

6:30 - up paddle box boats.
9:30 - sent starboard paddle box boat to cutter, to embark troops on board "Pluto
10:20 pm "Espiegle" sailed in charge of provision boat for troops
11:00 - Governor Sir J. Davis and Suite, General D'Aguilar & staff came on board
12:00 sent boats to embark the 18th regiment
Took two Lorchers in tow containing ordnance stores, sappers and miners

Friday - 2nd April

3am - Weighed and set on, and made signal to Pluto and Corsair to follow.
3:30 - Passed Espiegle laying off Carpsings noon.
7:00 mustered at quarters.
9:00 passed Chum pee Forts to several Chinese Men of War Junks and ships at anchor.
10:00 anchored off the Bogue Forts in 5 Fathoms and immediately landed the Governor General and their staffs and troops. and took possession of the same sappers and miners spiking and destroying the guns. Lowder vs.
10:20. Pluto and Corsair arrived the formed proceeded to Whampoa and the latter to to my boats with the troops under Colonel Brewster and proceeded in tow of "Corsair" to take possession of the North and South Whampoa Forts.
11:30 - weighed and set on towards these forts. Opened beef

12 noon - anchored off them
1:30 - Boats returned from destroying and making useless the guns at the forts oft he north and south Wangtung
1:45 "Corsair" proceeded to Whampoa
2:00 weighed and set on towards Whampoa, Espiegle hove in sight
4:15 - Passed the first bar. 5:0 cast off engineers junk having previously removed the stores and artillery junk, in consequence of her being leaky. 6:00 passed the 2nd bar.
6:20. Anchored at the entrance of Junk River and Long Reach in 6 fathoms. Lieut R. Coote and Captain of "Corsair" proceeded to sound the depth of water up the river.

3rd April Saturday

Arrived HMB Espiegle.
3:50 - paddle box boats with troops left the ship for "Pluto" and "Corsair".
6 am - Oat Pinnace. Paddle box boats returned, first guns in Dr and pinnace. Supplied "Corsair" with 1/2 tons of coals.
7:20 - manned and armed boats.
7:42 - Captain McDougall, Governor Sir J. Davies, General D'Aguilar and their staff with the officers in command of boats, left this ship for "Pluto" and "Corsair".
8:40 - "Pluto" and "Corsair" proceeded to Canton with troops, Lorchers and boats in tow. Employed cleaning ship and as requisite.
11:30 heard several reports of guns and perceived smoke in the direction of the Barrier Forts.

Noon - washed decks.
1:30 - mustered at quarters and completed guns crews form the 18th regiment. Employed cleaning ship and as requisite, and cooking provisions for troops.
7:45 arrived "Corsair" from Canton. Opened Pork, chocolate, sugar and tea,
11:00 - ship swing to flood line.
11:15 - boats came alongside with 1470 lbs beef, 735 lbs vegetables. Espiegle pinnace came alongside and took provisions for troops at Canton

4 April

Washed decks.
9:00 first cutter returned with orders. Supplied "Corsair" proceeded up to Canton having the 1st cutter and Espiegles's pinnace in tow. recd. fresh beef 1296 lbs, vegetables 60 lambs and 6 sheep.noon - employed pumping ship.
6:30 pm Espiegles pinnace arrived from canton.
11:45 - ship swung to flood tide

5 April

Washed decks. employed cleaning decks below.
9:00 Captain McDougall returned in Corsair from Canton, came alongside, recd. 38 boxes of Treasure, embarked 1 sergeant and 53 men of the 18th regiment on board "Corsair" sent on board 6 cases of large grain powder and 2 half cases containing cartridges for boats guns and ball cartridges.
11:15 "corsair" cast off and went alongside Espiegle.
11:40 - Corsair with Espiegle passed with Captain McDougall on board alongside and proceeded up the river towards Canton. Shifted (BB) cable to work on lower deck. Opened rum. employed pumping ship.
12 midnight ship swung to flood tide.

6 April

1am - Lolly (Lorcher) proceeded to Canton with volunteers from merchant ships.
7:45 - Charles Forbes (Steamer) passed down the river from Canton.
11:30 - ship swung to tide.

7 April

Washed decks exercised small arm men at musket drill. employed as necessary.
12 noon. saddle box boats and cutters arrived from Canton. ship swung to flood tide. Employed as requisite. Sent 86 lbs pork into coppers came out 24 lbs.
4:30 - corsair/steamer/passed with 42nd Regt NI on board for Hong Kong.

8 April - Whampoa.

Washed decks.
9:30 mustered at quarters.
11:45 - the gig arrived from canton. up and on paddle box oats. Put 83 lbs of pork into coppers came out 23 lbs. opened port, beef, took on fresh beef 694 lbs and vegetables 347 lbs.

3:45pm arrived Pluto from Canton with Capt. McDougall, Governor Sir J. Davis and General D'Aguilar with their staffs and troops. sent boats to Pluto to bring troops on board. In pinnace and both paddle box boats

9 April

4am. Took ordnance Lorchers in tow. 5:00 weighed and proceeded down the river Pluto in company.
5:45. Eased the engines and crossed the first bar.
6:00 proceeded to full speed.
7:30 - mustered the divisions.
8:-- cleared for action before passing the forts. observed them to be manned.
8:15. passed Tigris island.
8:34. passed the Bogue.
11:00 mustered at quarters.
Noon. exchanged colours with HMS Scout.
2:50 fired three guns.
HONG KONG
3:00 stopped the engines and came too with (BB) in 8 fathoms moved to 24 fathoms. Put paddle box boats and commenced to disembark the troops.
3:30 - His Excellency,Sir J. Davis, and General D'Aguilar left the ship. Fired three guns.
4:30 - boats returned.
5:00 up paddle box boats.
6:45 - arrived the HEI Crs. Steamer Pluto.

10 April

7 am - gave the guard to HMS Scout. employed cleaning decks below as requisite. Carpenters repairing hammock nettings and paddle box boats.
12 noon. sent paddle box boat to Commisariat Wharf to convey provisions to Pluto. holy stoned upper deck.

11 April - Sunday

7am relieved the guard.
10 am mustered by divisions. performed divine service.
pm landed liberty men

nb. back to regular routine. carpenters sent daily to Minden to work and repaired small items on Vulture.

27 April

1 May

5:45 am. French Corvette "Victorieuse" dressed ship and fired salute of 21 guns. Vulture dressed ship with ensigns at mast head.
at noon the French Corvette Victorieuse, HMS Scout and the shore fired a round in commemoration of the birthday of HM the King of the French. Salute of 21 guns, handed down the colours.

5 May

Sent three carpenters to "Alligator". Other carpenters repairing cutter

24 May - Birthday of Queen Victoria

Dressed ship with ensigns at mast heads in commemoration of the Birth of her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Employed preparing for sea. Came on board the Hon AR Johnstone.
12:35 - weighed and proceeded towards Capsing Moon Passage. Carried away fish tackle block. Altered course as required. Set jibe, bent garr foresail and set down.
4:30 lost hand leads.
5:00 passed Chunsee Forts and several war junks at anchor.
5:30 - passed Bogue Forts and Tigris. Secured the guard.
6:40 - eased engine passing 2nd bar.
7:00 full speed.
8:00 stopped and came to with BB in 6 fathoms. Moored in Bleuheim Beach.

25 May

Captain and the Hon AR Johnstone proceeded to Canton in gig, Captain returned at 4:15pm

27 May

Captain goes to Canton in gig, Lieut Coote proceeded to survey the river. crew employed picking oakum. Crewman lost overboard by accident

28 May

Weighed anchor and proceeded down the river. Exchanged colours with 2 French Corvettes at anchor.

29 May

Disrated John Chapman, captains coxswain, for disobedience of orders and contempt to his superior officer.

2 June

Disrated Mr James black, midshipman, to naval cadet for disobedience of orders and drunkenness

16 June

Read the Commander in Chiefs letter of thanks for the recent operations in Canton River

Dressed ship with ensigns at mastheads in commemoration of the Coronation of Her Majesty.

Left Hong Kong and steamed through Lesoon Passage by north end of Tarmador Island. past Pedro Branco.

Communicated by telegraph with HMS Ringdown.passed Chapel Island. Arrived at anchor at ANVOY

6 August

Vice Consul came on board and waited on Captain McDougall.(carpenters making pistol racks)

26 August

Dressed the ship in commemoration of the birth of His Royal Highness, Prince Albert

8 September.

Sir J. Davis, Governor of Hong Kong came on board and they steamed out of Hong Kong through Sulphur Channel and east Laura channel. exercised firing guns and flannel cartridges filled with shot. weighed and proceeded firing at different objects on shore whilst passing. Returning to hong Kong in the evening

6 October

2:20 - missed dingy. lowered cutter and sent her to look for dingy.
4:30 - cutter returned with dingy. Found that J. Highes (Boy 2nd class) had left the ship without leave. Josh Anderson (AB) was brought on board by police constable.
10:00 His excellence Sir J. Davis and suite came on board, manned yard. admiral visited ship.
11:00 weighed and proceeded through Sulpher and West Lamma Channel.
On Saturday 9 October entered Twin Bay along with HMB Ringdovr.

10 October - Turon Bay

Sent cutter with interpreter to communicate with authorities on shore. mustered by divisions and open list. read articles of war to ships company.

12 October

Sent cutter with interpreter to commnicate with Cochin Chinese authorities.also on 14 October. gig left the ship with captain, interpreter to communicate with Chinese authorities. carpenters making musket racks and arm stands

16 October

A mandarin came on board and reported the arrival of a high mandarin from the capital. captain and interpreter went onshore to communicate with him.
3pm. The Cochin Chinese Commissioner and suit came on board. Ringdove fired a salute of 3 guns. They left before sunset also accompanied by a three gun salute

17 October (Sunday)

His excellency Sir John Davies with Captain in gig attended by 1 & 2 cutters and Ringdove's boats proceeded to the town. Ringdove fired a salute of 15 guns on His Excellency leaving the ship.

22 October

The cutter sent on shore with presents for Mandarin -- 120 lbs of fine grained powder, 80 yards of blue serge and 2 cases of misc liquors in return for presents about to be made to officers and crews of HMS Vulture and Ringdove.These were: 3 bullocks, 5 pigs, 5s cocks 5 s fowls, 6 jars of spirits, baskets of fruit, bags of rice, 6 baskets of sugar from Cochin Chinese mandarins as Vultures proportion.

23 October

Ugly threatening appearances in weather barometer falling signs of an approaching gale. squalls and storms

24 October

HE Sir J Davis and Capt McDougall came on board having been detained on shore by the weather. Their boats having stove and swamped and lost from boats pikes.

25 October

Carpenters employed repairing cutter. 2 Cochin Chinese and mandarins came on board

27 October

Steaming out of Turon bay returning to hong Kong

9 November

Went up river to Canton. Carpenters are employed making dredlights for captains cabin (whatever those could be)

7 December

Issued soap to ships company

8 December

Back in canton. Capt McDougall proceed to Canton in cutter off paddle box boats out pinnace put the boats guns in. Cutter returned from Canton. 10 boats, marines and arms proceed to canton in charge of Lieut Sanders and Pasco with marines and 2 12 rocket tubes and rockets. cutter proceeded to canton strut muster round the merchant ships to ?? from ship "Minerva" "Euphrates" "Emma" "Hebrides" and "Australia". Mustered quarters and distributes arms to merchant s. sunset up boats. Capt McDougall and all boats returned from canton having left marines there. cleared boats on paddle box boats in pinnace. discharged merchants to their respective ships.

14 December

Punished J Gattens with 4 lashes for drunkenness on duty at Canton and striking sergeant Baker whilst in that state

Saturday. received fresh beef 391 lbs and vegetables 197 lbs and for troops fresh beef 102 lbs, vegetables 56 lbs.

28 December

Carpenters on short at work making Fore Yard

5 January 1848

Departed this life James Furlough (Boy 2nd class). mustered at quarters and exercised after quarters at great gun exercise. Carpenters employed making a coffin. after noon, sent funeral party to inter the body of deceased.

9 January

Weighed anchor and steamed upriver to canton. passed 2 Chinese war junks standing up the river. mustered at quarters and went through the detail of gunnery. passed Bogue Forts and Chinese war ship and Chinese bar junks at anchor on about Chumpee. set jib.

Took on board a number of passengers for England. stood out of sulphur channel through Lamma towards and through Cambridge passage towards Singapore in squally weather arriving 4 February in Singapore for coaling and supplies

Left Singapore for Cape of Good Hope.

Ran into bad squalls. Carpenters making a flop studsil boom. watch employed working up junk shook set out of boom mainsail.
