John Thompson

(1^st generation is suspect)

 

John Thompson was born 15 Apr 1730 in either Scotland or Ireland, possibly married Judith “Juda” Bodine, and died 9 Jun 1778 near Shamokin, Northumberland Co PA.

 

Judith Bodine, the possible wife of John Thompson, was born 17 Mar 1734/35 in Somerset Co NJ and died 17 Jul 1796 in Bound Brook, Somerset Co NJ.  She was the daughter of Abraham and Adrientje (Jansen) Bodine.

 

John and Judith (Bodine) Thompson had the following children:

 

1.       John, born 3 Jul 1772 near White House Station, Hunterdon Co NJ, died 9 Mar 1847 Pleasant Run, Hunterdon Co NJ, married Hannah Van Sickle 1 Dec 1793.

2.       James Marion, born 1 Jul 1777/1778 County Down Ireland, married Sarah Gilliland circa 1801 PA, died 11 Feb 1861 Cherry Twp, Butler Co PA, buried West Sunbury Cemetery, West Sunbury, Butler Co PA.

 

 

 

James Thompson

 

James Marion Thompson was born circa 1 Jul 1777/1778 in Ireland, married Sarah Gilliland circa 1801 in Ireland, and died 11 (or14) Feb 1861 in Cherry Twp, Butler Co PA.  James and his wife Sarah are buried in West Sunbury Cemetery, West Sunbury, Butler Co PA.

 

Sarah Gilliland was born circa 1774 in Ireland and died 10 Jan 1862 in Butler Co PA.  She is presumably the daughter of John Gilliland and Elizabeth Young.  John was born circa 1725 in Augusta Co VA, married Elizabeth Young circa 1770 Washington Co TN, died circa 1798 Cocke Co TN and buried in Henderson Spring Cemetery, Sevier Co TN.  Elizabeth Young was born circa 1753 in Augusta Co VA, died circa 1795 in Cocke Co TN.  Her parents were Robert and Mary (Douglass) Young.

JAMES THOMPSON was born in Ireland in 1778, there married Sarah GILLILAND, and immigrated to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and thence to Butler county, early in the present century. He purchased a farm in what is now Franklin township, subsequently removed to Beaver county, and then returned to Butler county, and bought a tract of 600 acres of land in Cherry township. Here he cleared a farm, made substantial improvements, and resided upon it down to his death, in 1861. He was a member of the Protestant Episcopal church. To James and Sarah THOMPSON were born twelve children, as follows: Mary A.; Jane, and Sarah, all of whom are dead; Elizabeth; Moses; Arabella; James, deceased; Minerva; Matilda, and John, the last two of whom are deceased; Emeline, and Andrew, deceased.

I, James Thompson of Cherry Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, being of poor health but being of sound and unaffected memory, thank to God for the same and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs while I have strength and capacity.  I do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made and First and principally I commit my soul unto the kindness of my creator who gave it with my body to the Earth at the discretion of my Executer herein after mentioned and as to which was duly created wherewith it hath pleased God to entrust me with, I dispose of the terms as follows to.

 

Item 1st            I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Sarah, all my movable property in and about the house and all of my livestock that I may have at my hand and likewise the choice of all grains that my son, John, raises on his farm and what she may need provided she lives longer than the Testatees and that the foregoing property left to my wife shall go to my hears to whom I may hereafter give it.

 

Item 2   I give and bequeath to my daughter, Mary Ann Davidson, $20 Twenty dollars.

 

Item 3   I give and bequeath to my daughter, Jane Newkirk, $20 Twenty dollars.

 

Item 4   I give and bequeath to my daughter, Catherine Baker, $50 Fifty dollars.

 

Item 5   I give and bequeath to my daughter, Sarah Shurlock, $160 One hundred and sixty dollars.

 

Item 6   I give and bequeath to my daughter, Elizabeth Irwin, one cookhouse that (     ?     ) in my farm.

 

Item 7   I give and bequeath to my son, Moses Thompson, Twenty and a half acres (20 ½) land on the west of Slippery Rock Creek adjoining (     ?     ) of (     ?     ), neighbors of J C Bovard and John Thompson and (     ?     ) me back.

 

Item 8   I give and bequeath to my son, John Thompson, one (     ?     ) brass clock with (     ?     ?     ) wall bureau, one heater, one windmill.

 

Item 9   I give and bequeath to my daughter, Arabella Tinker, $100 One hundred dollars.

 

Item 10 I give and bequeath to my son, James Thompson, one feather bed, one green chest, and my weaving cloth.

 

Item 11 I give and bequeath to my daughter, Minerva Hall, Two hundred dollars ($200) and one cow and all the sheep that I may have at my hand.

 

Item 12 I give and bequeath to my daughter, Emiline Mortland, One hundred dollars ($100), one cooking stove and ware belonging to the same.

 

Item 13 I give and bequeath to my grand daughter, Elizabeth Irwin, ($50) Fifty dollars and one large (     ?     ): one ball and housing.

 

Item 14 I give and bequeath to my sons, John and James and Elizabeth, I give the equal use of the cross cut saw and grind stone.

 

Item 15 I give and bequeath to my daughters, Catherine, Sarah, Elizabeth, Minerva, and Emiline, equally all the property not heretofore disposed of at the discretion of their mother if she should live longer than the Testatees.

 

Item 16 I authorize my Executor hereafter mentioned to pay all the several bequests as soon as it may come into this house.

 

Item 17 I do hereby nominate and appoint and constitute Washington Brown of Cherry Township, Butler County, Pa. and Moses Thompson of Center Township, Butler County, Pa. Executors of my last will hereby revoking and making void all former wills and attachments.  In witness whereas the said Testators have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal this 7th day of February A D 1861.

Analysis of John Marion Thompson’s Will

(This was found by “Geibel” in the Butler County Archives, and given to me by Nancy Thompson Derby.  James Marion Thompson was born on July 1, 1777 and died February 14, 1861.  Some sources show his death as February 11.  Apparently it was expected as the will is dated February 7th.  This mentions all his offspring except Matilda who died in 1845 and Andrew who died in 1832.  The will appears to have been written in the same handwriting as James Thompson’s signature.

 

Elizabeth’s husband, John Irwin, died in January 1846 when she was three months pregnant with her only child.  She apparently rejoined the household so her mother could help her through her pregnancy.  It is assumed that she remained there to care for her elderly parents.  James was then 69 years old. 

 

The child, Elizabeth, was the only granddaughter included in the will.  If she was raised in the household, she was probably a major caregiver during the last years of her grandparents thereby earning a place in the will.  She was 37 years old when the only child of record, Calvin Hogg, was born.

 

Some of the words were illegible and identified with a question mark.  I made educated guesses on some other words.  This treasured document was transcribed for the enlightenment and enjoyment of his descendants.

1.       Mary Ann, born 9/10 Oct 1802 Butler Co PA, married John Davidson, died 16 Dec 1860 Poweshiek Co IA.  John was born 12 May 1792 Belfast Ireland and died 10 Apr 1880 Poweshiek Co IA.

2.       Jane, born 16 Dec 1804 Butler Co PA, married Shipton/Shipman Newkirk circa 1827, died 4 Sep 1869.  Shipton/Shipman was born 17 Oct 1804 Washington Co PA, died 10 Mar 1889 Poweshiek Co IA and was the son of Henry and Rebecca (Davis) Newkirk.

3.       Catherine, 15 Jul 1807 Butler Co PA, married Richard Baker, died 9 Oct 1884 Big Beaver, Beaver Co PA, buried Clinton Cemetery, Wampum, Beaver Co PA.  Richard was born 25 May 1799 Big Beaver, Beaver Co PA, died 2 Dec 1882 Big Beaver, Beaver Co PA and is buried next to his wife.  He is the son of Robert and Rachel (Williams) Baker.

4.       Sarah, born 16 Jul 1809 Butler Co PA, married Samuel Sherlock.  Samuel was born circa 1805 Butler Co PA.

5.       Elizabeth, born 28 Jan 1812 New Hope, Butler Co PA, married John Irwin circa 1837, died 1 Apr 1879 or 1897, buried West Sunbury Cemetery, West Sunbury, Butler Co PA.

6.       Moses, born 18 Apr 1814 Pittsburg, Allegheny Co PA, married Jane Thompson 19 Feb 1833 Butler Co PA.  Jane was the daughter of Anthony Thompson.

MOSES THOMPSON, eldest son of James and Sarah (GILLILAND) THOMPSON, was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, April 18, 1814, and was reared and educated in Butler and Beaver counties. In August, 1832, he came to Butler county from Beaver, and has since resided in this county. On February 19, 1833, he married Jane THOMPSON, a daughter of Anthony THOMPSON, of Centre township, to whom have been born the following children: Elizabeth A., wife of Henry WHITMIRE; Sarah, deceased; Anthony; William H., deceased; Josiah M., and James M. Mr. THOMPSON was a justice of the peace for ten years, and held most of the other township offices. In politics, he was in early life a Whig, and since the formation of the Republican party he has been an adherent of that organization. He is now retired from active life, and resides in the borough of Butler. He is a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church.

 

ANTHONY THOMPSON, eldest son of Moses and Jane THOMPSON, was born in Centre township, Butler county, May 5, 1838, and has always followed farming. He received a good common school education, and since attaining his majority he has filled nearly all of the township offices. Politically, he is a Republican, and in religion, he is an adherent of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. THOMPSON was married September 20, 1860, to Elizabeth A., daughter of William RUSSELL, of Centre township. Six children have been the fruits of this union, as follows: Moses G.; Elizabeth A.; Martha J., deceased; Maggie A.; William R., deceased, and Anthony Robert. His present homestead was settled by Simon YOUNG, Sr.; was bought by Moses THOMPSON fifty years ago, and was purchased by Anthony THOMPSON from his father twenty-three years ago, since which time it has been his permanent home.

8.       John, born 3 May 1818 Butler Co PA, married Margaret Ann Turk, died 7 Jul 1863.  Margaret was born circa 1822 n Butler Co PA.

9.       Arabella, born 22 Apr 1821 Butler Co PA, married Edwin Tinker.  Edwin born circa 1817 in Butler Co PA.

10.   James, born 17 Feb or 07 May 1823 Cherry Twp, Butler Co PA, married Rose Anne Covert, died 27 Jun or 30 Jun 1862, Civil War Battle of Gaines' Mill (8 m NE of Richmond) VA.  Anne was born circa 10 Jan 1820 in Slippery Rock, Butler Co PA, died 16 Jun 1902 Grove City, Mercer Co PA and was the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Cornelius) Covert.  The company that James was a part of was recruited in Sunbury, Butler Co PA.  In honor of Rev. W. T. Dickson, then Principal of the West Sunbury Academy, at which the members of the company were students, the company was called the “Dickson Guards”.

11.   Minerva, born 23 Jun 1825 Butler Co PA, married William Hall circa 1843, died 13 Dec 1906 Salt Creek Twp, Tama Co IA, buried Rector Cemetery, Chelsea, Tama Co IA.  William was born 19 Jan 1811 Donegal Co Ireland and died 7 Jul 1898 Salt Creek Twp, Tama Co IA.  He was the son of Patrick and Isabelle Hall.

12.   Andrew, born 1 Feb 1828, Butler Co PA, died 12 Jan 1832.

13.   Emeline, 23 Apr 1829 Butler Co PA, married William Mortland, died 5 Sep 1897.  William was born circa 1825 in Butler Co PA.
