George Spangler was born circa 1785
Buffalo, Northumberland Co [present day Union Co] PA, married Elizabeth
Bressler circa 1808 Centre Co PA, and died 5 Oct 1851 Cherrytree Twp, Venango
Co PA. There is a reference to a
"George Spangler" buried in the Rodin Cemetery (Cemetery R82 as
listed on the Heritage Room Map, Oil City (PA) Library) - with the notation
"single grave on Buxton Road".
In 1957, a tombstone was found alongside
Elizabeth Bressler was born circa 1780
in Pine Grove, Berks Co [present day Schuylkill Co] PA, died after 1860 in
Venango Co PA and is buried in the Cherrytree Presbyterian Church Cemetery,
Venango Co PA. The stone is reportedly
broken so her death date is unknown. She
last appears in the 1860 census (age 88) living with her son George and his
family. She is possibly the daughter of
John Nicholas Bressler (born 8 Jun 1758 Tulpehocken, Berk Co PA, married
Catharine Elizabeth Boyer circa 1779 Pine Grove, Berks Co [present day
Schuylkill Co] PA, died 20 Apr 1843 Haines, Centre Co PA) and Catherine
Elizabeth Boyer (born circa 1760 Berks Co PA, died circa 1836 Centre Co
PA). John Nicholas Bressler's parents were

Spangler and Catherine (Spangler) Reynolds, both of Cherrytree Twp, sells 14
acres and 26 perches in Cherrytree Twp to Henry Buxton also of Cherrytree Twp,
for $300. George originally purchased
the acreage in 1849. The deed states
that Elizabeth, the widow, and Catherine, a daughter, acquired title to this
land through the will of George Spangler.
Although the above deed indicates that
a will exists for George Spangler, none was probated in the Venango Co PA courthouse.

Venango Co PA and is buried at Jerusalem Corners Cemetery, Pleasantville,
Venango Co PA. According to his death
certificate, his cause of death was listed as "Senility".
George (Jr) first appears in the
Venango Co PA tax assessment lists in
Rebecca Cosper, George Spangler's 1st
wife, was born 10/11 Mar 1832 in PA and died 8 Mar 1859 (or March 1860) in
PA. George and Rebecca are listed in the
1850 Cherrytree Twp, Venango Co PA Census with no children - so they probably
married in 1849 or 1850. The 1860
Mortality Schedule lists her death date as March 1860, age 24, and having died
in Oakland Twp (Venango Co) of consumption (TB). In the 1850 census, George and Rebecca are
listed as living next to his parents and her parents.

Jacob's son William and his wife
Abigail appear in the 1840 Pymatuning Twp, Mercer Co PA census and in the 1850
Cherrytree Twp, Venango Co PA census. In
the 1850 census, they are listed as living next to their daughter Rebecca and
her husband George Spangler (see below for details on this 1850 census). On 9 Apr 1857 William and Abigail "of
Cherrytree Twp" sell their 33 acres in Cherrytree Twp to James C. Hugh (or
Hancox?) "of the same place" for $400. According to this deed, William and Abigail
purchased this land from James and Nancy Irwin in 1849 (although this deed was
not recorded). After 1857 or so, William
and Abigail had moved to
Salinda Jane Renninger, George
Spangler's 2nd wife, was born 20 Jul 1840 in Oakland Twp, Venango Co
PA and was the daughter of John Renninger of Oakland Twp, Venango Co PA. She died in Oct 1911 at the age of 71 and is
buried in Jerusalem Corners Cemetery, Pleasantville, Venango Co PA. When she married George circa 1860, she may
have been previously married as she is listed in his obituary as having a name
of Salinda Wydner - but her name is listed as Salinda Renninger in the following
excerpted biographical sketch of her descendant Lewis Manly Watson:

LEWIS MANLEY
WATSON bears the reputation of being one of the most capable young business men
engaged in oil production in Oil Creek township, and he is probably even better
known in his musical associations, to which he has devoted most of his leisure
for years. He and his brother are
operating a valuable lease, with whose development their father was occupied
for a number of years before his death.
James and
Susan (McConnell) Watson, grandparents of Lewis Manley Watson, were early
residents of northern Venango county, but spent the latter part of their lives
in Crawford county. Their son Robert
Watson was born April 4, 1845, in Oil Creek township, Venango county, five
miles southeast of

G.W. Spangler,
an aged citizen of Pleasantville, passed away at his home at 11 a.m. Monday
from the infirmities of age. The
deceased was born in Center county July 5, 1824, being nearly 84 years of age
at the time of his death.
In 1844, he
was married to Rebecca Cosper. In 1859
she passed away, leaving him with three children.
He was married
again in 1860 to Selinda Wydner and is survived by her, with eight children by
this second marriage.
For
forty-three years he had been a faithful member of the U. B. church at
Jerusalem Corners.
Mr. Spangler
is survived by his wife and eleven children, as follows: Mrs. Robert Watson of
Shamburg; Mrs. J. W. Birtcil of Richburg; G.N. B. Spangler of Tidioute; Marion
Spangler; S.B. Spangler and E. J. Spangler, all of Pleasantville; Mrs. W.A.
Bleakley of Goodwill Hill; Mrs. H.L. Lynes of Cambridge Springs; Mrs. A.M.
Fasenmeyer of Titusville; E.J. Spangler of Pleasantville; Miss Flora Spangler
of Warren and Miss Bessie Spangler, who resides at home.

I, George W.
Spangler, of the state of Pennsylvania and County of Venango being of sound
mind, memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this my last will
and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any
time heretofore made.
First--I will
and direct that my body be decently and properly interred in my family lot in
the Jerusalem Cemetery formerly a part of my farm, and I also will and direct
that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as may be
convenient out of my estate.
Item--I give,
devise and bequeath unto my beloved wife Salinda Spangler all my household
goods or household furniture to have and to hold the same to herself and her
heirs forever.
Item--I also
give devise and bequeath unto my said wife, Salinda Spangler all other of my
estate or property, real personal or mixed of whatsoever nature or kind
wheresoever the same may be and particularly the lands now occupied by me and
known as the Spangler Homestead and all personal, mixed, chattel or other
property in around, about or upon the same, said lands bounded and described as
follows: Tract one hundred ten (110) situate in Oil Creek Township, Venango
County Pa. Bounded on the north by lands of J.Y. Siggins' heirs, on the east by
lands of J.S. Bumstead, on the south by lands known as the Ross farm and on the
west by lands of David Whiter and the Shamburg road, containing one hundred
(100) acres more or less, with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging,
together with the same estate, interest and control of the Cemetery tract that
I now have, to have and to hold the same for and during her natural life,
provided however, this my said wife shall use and conserve only the rents,
profits, income or increase therefrom necessary for her support and maintenance
without waste or detriment to the estate herein devised and the balance of such
rents, profits, income or increase she, my said wife, shall pay to my son
Marion Spangler from time to time and provided further that my said wife,
Salinda Spangler shall not sell, assign or transfer the estate, interest or right
herein devised or bequeathed to her at any time during her natural life, and
from and after the death of my said wife, Salinda Spangler, or in case I
survive my wife, then at my death, or in case my said wife shall again marry,
then at the time of said marriage, or upon either event all the estate or
property devised or bequeathed to my said wife for life as aforesaid, I give
devise, will and bequeath to my son Marion Spangler to have and to hold the
same to himself, and his heirs forever.
Item--I also will
and direct that my said son Marion Spangler pay Ten Dollars ($10.00) in cash to
each of my children as follows: Deliah Watson, Phoebe Birtcil, Geo. W. B.
Spangler, Samuel B. Spangler, Emma Bleaksley, Elizabeth Lyons, Fannie Fesweyer,
Elijah Spangler, Flora Spangler and Bessie Spangler, and to the children of my
daughter, Jane Holmes, deceased, Clyde and Scott each five Dollars ($5.00), as
soon as may be practical out of my estate.
Item--And in
case my said wife and myself shall both die before either or both of my
daughters Flora and Bessie are of age, I will, direct and enjoin that my said
son, Marion Spangler, shall care for and direct each till they each are of age.
Item--I also
make it incumbent upon my said son, Marion Spangler and the bequests herein
made to him expressly conditional to the full extent of all property herein
devised to him, upon his supporting and maintaining my said wife and myself,
either or both, incase we shall, either, or both, become dependent, or in any
way incapacitated so that we or either of us can not labor or maintain
ourselves, my said son to be exonerated form such support or maintenance of my
said wife if she remarries; and upon the further express condition that my said
son shall not sell, transfer or assign, the estate herein devised to him, or
any interest therein during the life of my said wife, otherwise, however, in
case my said wife Salinda Spangler shall marry again.
Lastly-I do
hereby make, constitute and appoint my said son Marion Spangler, and James A.
Cornwell executors of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I, George W. Spangler have
to this my last will and testament, written on two sheets of legal cap paper,
set my hand and seal this 22nd day of October A.D. 1896.
