Georg Christian Spangler

 

Georg Christian Spangler was born circa 1728 in Germany, married Anna Maria ________ circa 1754 in PA,, and died January 1802 Miles, Centre Co PA.  According to research conducted by Charles Boetsch, Georg "arrived in Philadelphia on 2 Oct 1749 on the ship Jacob with his sister Susanna Spangler and settled in Williams, Northampton Co PA.  By 1766 he is listed as a Farmer in Moore, Northumberland Co PA where he eventually owned a 600 acre farm.  He was a Private, 8^th Class, 1^st Company, 3^rd Battalion, Northampton Co PA Militia, Revolutionary War from July 1780 to September 1783, engaged in service on the frontier despite being fifty years of age; joined his son Christopher Spangler in Centre Co in 1797."

 

Anna Maria ______was born circa 1737 and died after 20 Jan 1820 in Miles, Centre Co PA.

John Henry Spangler

 

John Henry Spangler was born 31 Jan 1763 Lower Nazareth, Northampton Co PA, married Mary Magdalena Haupt circa 1784 Northampton Co PA, and died circa 1843 in Logan, Clinton Co PA.  According to research conducted by Charles Boetsch, John was "jobber of West Buffalo, Northumberland Co [present day Union Co] PA in 1799; was in Miles, Centre Co PA in 1800; pioneer settler of Sugar Valley PA in 1806, crossing from Rebersburg through Spangler Gap; [owned] 400 acre farm along Down Fishing Creek, with 1^st sawmill in the valley by 1811."

 

Mary Magdalena Haupt was born circa 1769 Bucks Co PA and died circa 1847 Logan, Clinton Co PA.  She was the daughter of Johannes and Anna Catharina (_________) Haupt.  Johannes as born 27 Aug 1734 in Windesheim, Rheinland Germany, married circa 1758 in PA and died 7 Jun 1814 in Moore, Northampton Co PA.  Anna Catharina died after 20 Jan 1802 in Miles, Centre Co PA.  Researcher Charles Boetsch has information that pushes Johannes line back three additional generations (on both his father's and mother's side), all of which were from the Windesheim Rheinland region of present day Germany.

4.       Frederick, born circa 1795 Buffalo, Northumberland [present day Union Co] PA, married Christina Bressler circa 1816 Centre Co PA, died after 1870 Albany, Green Co WI.

George Spangler

 

George Spangler was born circa 1785 Buffalo, Northumberland Co [present day Union Co] PA, married Elizabeth Bressler circa 1808 Centre Co PA, and died 5 Oct 1851 Cherrytree Twp, Venango Co PA.  There is a reference to a "George Spangler" buried in the Rodin Cemetery (Cemetery R82 as listed on the Heritage Room Map, Oil City (PA) Library) - with the notation "single grave on Buxton Road".  In 1957, a tombstone was found alongside Buxton Road in Cherrytree Township with the following inscription: George Spangler, died Oct 5 1851, aged 75 years.  Since this stone is on the land sold by George's widow to the Henry Buxton family, it seems probable that this burial may have been displaced by widening or straightening of the township road and the stone placed alongside the berm at that time.

 

Elizabeth Bressler was born circa 1780 in Pine Grove, Berks Co [present day Schuylkill Co] PA, died after 1860 in Venango Co PA and is buried in the Cherrytree Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Venango Co PA.  The stone is reportedly broken so her death date is unknown.  She last appears in the 1860 census (age 88) living with her son George and his family.  She is possibly the daughter of John Nicholas Bressler (born 8 Jun 1758 Tulpehocken, Berk Co PA, married Catharine Elizabeth Boyer circa 1779 Pine Grove, Berks Co [present day Schuylkill Co] PA, died 20 Apr 1843 Haines, Centre Co PA) and Catherine Elizabeth Boyer (born circa 1760 Berks Co PA, died circa 1836 Centre Co PA).  John Nicholas Bressler's parents were Hans Georg Bressler (born 1693 Heimbach, Rheinland Germany) and Eva Magdalena Bach (born 1694 Nieerhochstadt Rheinland Germany).

 

John' Nicholas Bressler's parents were Johann Georg Simon Bressler (born 2 Apr 1721 Niederhochasdt, Rheinland Germany, married Anna Barbara_______ circa 1749, died 12 Nov 1802 Pine Grove, Berks Co PA) and Anna Barbara ________ (born circa 1725, died before 12 Nov 1802 in Pine Grove, Berks Co PA).

 

Catharine Elizabeth Boyer's parents were John Assimus Boyer (born ????, married Maria Eva Spieler 24 Jul 1757 Berks Co PA) and Maria Eva Spieler.

 

George Spangler first appears in the Venango Co PA tax assessment lists in Cherrytree Township in 1838, having moved there from Centre Co PA.  He initially purchased 40 acres from a Frederick Bennyhoof and then 123 acres from a J. Hamilton.  At his death he owned 13 acres.  No deeds exist for any of these transactions - however the sale of the latter 13 acres was recorded in the following deed by the widow Elizabeth Spangler:

Elizabeth Spangler and Catherine (Spangler) Reynolds, both of Cherrytree Twp, sells 14 acres and 26 perches in Cherrytree Twp to Henry Buxton also of Cherrytree Twp, for $300.  George originally purchased the acreage in 1849.  The deed states that Elizabeth, the widow, and Catherine, a daughter, acquired title to this land through the will of George Spangler.

 

Although the above deed indicates that a will exists for George Spangler, none was probated in the Venango Co PA courthouse.  Elizabeth also died intestate.

 

The children of George and Elizabeth (Bressler) Spangler were:

 

1.       John, born 14 Feb 1809 Miles, Centre Co PA, died after 1832.

2.       Son, born circa 1810 Miles, Centre Co PA, died after 1820.

3.       Catharine, born circa 20 Aug 1811 Miles, Centre Co PA, married Charles B. Reynolds circa 1836 Venango Co PA, died after 1880, Tomah, Monroe Co WI.  Charles was born circa 1818 in PA.  The family of Charles and Catherine (Spangler) Reynolds lived with George and Delilah (Watson) Spangler in the 1860 census.

4.       Jonathan, born 11 Feb 1815 Logan, Centre Co [present day Clinton Co] PA, married Margaret Ann Seeley circa 1839 in PA, died 23 Jul 1882 Perry, Shiawassee MI.

5.       Son, born circa 1819 Logan, Centre Co [present day Clinton Co] PA, died after circa 1830.

6.       George Washington, born 5 Jul 1824 Centre Co PA, married (1) Rebecca Cosper circa 1849 Oil Creek Twp, Venango Co PA, (2) Salinda Jane Renninger circa 1860, died 15 Jun 1908 Oil Creek Twp, Venango Co PA, buried Jerusalem Corners Cemetery, Pleasantville, Venango Co PA.

George Washington Spangler

 

George Washington Spangler was born 5 Jul 1824 in Centre Co PA. He married twice: (1) Rebecca Cosper circa 1849 in Oil Creek Twp, Venango Co PA, and (2) Salinda Jane Renninger circa 1860.  George died on 15 Jun 1908 in Oil Creek Twp, Venango Co PA and is buried at Jerusalem Corners Cemetery, Pleasantville, Venango Co PA.  According to his death certificate, his cause of death was listed as "Senility".

 

George (Jr) first appears in the Venango Co PA tax assessment lists in Cherrytree Township in 1850 listing his occupation as a carpenter.  In 1852, he is listed in Oakland Twp, Venango Co PA.  In 1865, a deed records the sale of his Oakland Twp land to Jonas Weber (Venango Co PA Deed Book NN, page 446).  In this 1865 deed, he lists his residence as Pleasantville. By 1870, he is listed in the census in Oil Creek Twp with a post office address of Shamburg.

 

Rebecca Cosper, George Spangler's 1^st wife, was born 10/11 Mar 1832 in PA and died 8 Mar 1859 (or March 1860) in PA.  George and Rebecca are listed in the 1850 Cherrytree Twp, Venango Co PA Census with no children - so they probably married in 1849 or 1850.  The 1860 Mortality Schedule lists her death date as March 1860, age 24, and having died in Oakland Twp (Venango Co) of consumption (TB).  In the 1850 census, George and Rebecca are listed as living next to his parents and her parents.

 

Cosper/Casper Information

 

According to Alice Morrison, Titusville Genealogist, "Cosper is undoubtedly the German name Casper or Kasper, also spelled Kaspar.  The short "a" in German is approximately equivalent to the short "o" in English, and in Pennsylvania German the short "a" is identical to the English short "o", hence when an English speaking person heard a Pennsylvania German pronounce the name Kasper, he naturally wrote it as Kosper or Cosper.

 

According to David R. Cosper (Cosper descendant and researcher from Dowers Grove IL), Rebecca was most probably the daughter of William and Abigail (St Clair) Cosper.  William was born circa 1789 in PA and Abigail was born circa 1798 in Vermont - and they had nine children.  William is the son of Jacob (born circa 1745 - died circa 1822).  A Jacob Cosper, "age 51", appears in the 1800 Mifflin Twp, Lycoming Co PA federal census.  Also listed in this township is Andrew Coover, also "age 51" that was known to have come to Cherrytree Township about the same time that Jacob did.  A Jacob Cosper first appears in the Western PA area in 1805 when he is listed in the Sugarcreek (now Cherrytree) Twp, Venango Co PA tax assessment lists.  Jacob also appears in the Sugarcreek Twp federal census in 1810 and 1820.

Jacob Cosper, of Cherrytree Twp, Venango Co PA.  Mentions wife (not named), oldest son John, sons William, Andrew and Jacob; daughters Catherin, Margaret, Sarah and Isabela. 

 

Jacob's son William and his wife Abigail appear in the 1840 Pymatuning Twp, Mercer Co PA census and in the 1850 Cherrytree Twp, Venango Co PA census.  In the 1850 census, they are listed as living next to their daughter Rebecca and her husband George Spangler (see below for details on this 1850 census).  On 9 Apr 1857 William and Abigail "of Cherrytree Twp" sell their 33 acres in Cherrytree Twp to James C. Hugh (or Hancox?) "of the same place" for $400.  According to this deed, William and Abigail purchased this land from James and Nancy Irwin in 1849 (although this deed was not recorded).  After 1857 or so, William and Abigail had moved to Wisconsin.  He owned a small piece of land in Columbia Co WI but sold this in 1866.  William died in (probably) Sauk Co WI, between December 1866 and June 1880.  Abigail was still living in Sauk Co WI in June 1880.  David determined that William left no recorded estate but did own a small piece of property in Columbia Co WI but sold it in 1866.

 

Salinda Jane Renninger, George Spangler's 2^nd wife, was born 20 Jul 1840 in Oakland Twp, Venango Co PA and was the daughter of John Renninger of Oakland Twp, Venango Co PA.  She died in Oct 1911 at the age of 71 and is buried in Jerusalem Corners Cemetery, Pleasantville, Venango Co PA.  When she married George circa 1860, she may have been previously married as she is listed in his obituary as having a name of Salinda Wydner - but her name is listed as Salinda Renninger in the following excerpted biographical sketch of her descendant Lewis Manly Watson:

LEWIS MANLEY WATSON bears the reputation of being one of the most capable young business men engaged in oil production in Oil Creek township, and he is probably even better known in his musical associations, to which he has devoted most of his leisure for years.  He and his brother are operating a valuable lease, with whose development their father was occupied for a number of years before his death.

 

James and Susan (McConnell) Watson, grandparents of Lewis Manley Watson, were early residents of northern Venango county, but spent the latter part of their lives in Crawford county.  Their son Robert Watson was born April 4, 1845, in Oil Creek township, Venango county, five miles southeast of Titusville, where he was reared and educated.  He continued to reside here after the removal of his parents to Crawford county, and married a girl from the same neighborhood, his union with Delilah Spangler taking place Jan. 31, 1866.  Her parents, George and Rebecca (Casper) Spangler, lived in the old homestead at Jerusalem Corners (two miles west of Pleasantville, and her grandfather, John Spangler, had settled about 1830 in Cherrytree township, this county, some twelve miles farther west.  He died there.  It was in 1863 that George W. Spangler settled at Jerusalem Corners, on the property where his son Marion now lives, clearing most of the place himself and erecting the present residence thereon in 1873.  There is a barn on the tract doubtless over one hundred years old.  Mr. Spangler was a carpenter as well as farmer, and his services were especially in demand as a barn builder, the reason for which is evident in the appearance of the substantial and workmanlike structures of his erection still in use in this section. He was an ardent member of the United Brethren denomination, and donated a site for the church from his land, as well as a plot for the cemetery.  He died at the age of eighty-five years.  He was twice married, his, second wife being Salinda Renninger, daughter of John Renninger, of Oakland township, this county.  She lived to the age of seventy-one.

G.W. Spangler Has Passed Away.

Leaves Numerous Family

 

G.W. Spangler, an aged citizen of Pleasantville, passed away at his home at 11 a.m. Monday from the infirmities of age.  The deceased was born in Center county July 5, 1824, being nearly 84 years of age at the time of his death.

In 1844, he was married to Rebecca Cosper.  In 1859 she passed away, leaving him with three children.

He was married again in 1860 to Selinda Wydner and is survived by her, with eight children by this second marriage.

For forty-three years he had been a faithful member of the U. B. church at Jerusalem Corners.

Mr. Spangler is survived by his wife and eleven children, as follows: Mrs. Robert Watson of Shamburg; Mrs. J. W. Birtcil of Richburg; G.N. B. Spangler of Tidioute; Marion Spangler; S.B. Spangler and E. J. Spangler, all of Pleasantville; Mrs. W.A. Bleakley of Goodwill Hill; Mrs. H.L. Lynes of Cambridge Springs; Mrs. A.M. Fasenmeyer of Titusville; E.J. Spangler of Pleasantville; Miss Flora Spangler of Warren and Miss Bessie Spangler, who resides at home.

The funeral services will be held at the Jerusalem church at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. A. Meeker officiating.  Interment will be made in the Jerusalem cemetery.

I, George W. Spangler, of the state of Pennsylvania and County of Venango being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.

First--I will and direct that my body be decently and properly interred in my family lot in the Jerusalem Cemetery formerly a part of my farm, and I also will and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid as soon as may be convenient out of my estate.

Item--I give, devise and bequeath unto my beloved wife Salinda Spangler all my household goods or household furniture to have and to hold the same to herself and her heirs forever.

Item--I also give devise and bequeath unto my said wife, Salinda Spangler all other of my estate or property, real personal or mixed of whatsoever nature or kind wheresoever the same may be and particularly the lands now occupied by me and known as the Spangler Homestead and all personal, mixed, chattel or other property in around, about or upon the same, said lands bounded and described as follows: Tract one hundred ten (110) situate in Oil Creek Township, Venango County Pa. Bounded on the north by lands of J.Y. Siggins' heirs, on the east by lands of J.S. Bumstead, on the south by lands known as the Ross farm and on the west by lands of David Whiter and the Shamburg road, containing one hundred (100) acres more or less, with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging, together with the same estate, interest and control of the Cemetery tract that I now have, to have and to hold the same for and during her natural life, provided however, this my said wife shall use and conserve only the rents, profits, income or increase therefrom necessary for her support and maintenance without waste or detriment to the estate herein devised and the balance of such rents, profits, income or increase she, my said wife, shall pay to my son Marion Spangler from time to time and provided further that my said wife, Salinda Spangler shall not sell, assign or transfer the estate, interest or right herein devised or bequeathed to her at any time during her natural life, and from and after the death of my said wife, Salinda Spangler, or in case I survive my wife, then at my death, or in case my said wife shall again marry, then at the time of said marriage, or upon either event all the estate or property devised or bequeathed to my said wife for life as aforesaid, I give devise, will and bequeath to my son Marion Spangler to have and to hold the same to himself, and his heirs forever.

Item--I also will and direct that my said son Marion Spangler pay Ten Dollars ($10.00) in cash to each of my children as follows: Deliah Watson, Phoebe Birtcil, Geo. W. B. Spangler, Samuel B. Spangler, Emma Bleaksley, Elizabeth Lyons, Fannie Fesweyer, Elijah Spangler, Flora Spangler and Bessie Spangler, and to the children of my daughter, Jane Holmes, deceased, Clyde and Scott each five Dollars ($5.00), as soon as may be practical out of my estate.

Item--And in case my said wife and myself shall both die before either or both of my daughters Flora and Bessie are of age, I will, direct and enjoin that my said son, Marion Spangler, shall care for and direct each till they each are of age.

Item--I also make it incumbent upon my said son, Marion Spangler and the bequests herein made to him expressly conditional to the full extent of all property herein devised to him, upon his supporting and maintaining my said wife and myself, either or both, incase we shall, either, or both, become dependent, or in any way incapacitated so that we or either of us can not labor or maintain ourselves, my said son to be exonerated form such support or maintenance of my said wife if she remarries; and upon the further express condition that my said son shall not sell, transfer or assign, the estate herein devised to him, or any interest therein during the life of my said wife, otherwise, however, in case my said wife Salinda Spangler shall marry again.

Lastly-I do hereby make, constitute and appoint my said son Marion Spangler, and James A. Cornwell executors of this my last will and testament.  In witness whereof I, George W. Spangler have to this my last will and testament, written on two sheets of legal cap paper, set my hand and seal this 22nd day of October A.D. 1896.
