Carl (Charles) Peter Sandberg

 

Carl (Charles or Charley) Peter Sandberg was born 15 Jul 1831 in Wderstad, terly, Socken, Sweden, married Anna Maria Lind on 6 Nov 1869 (probably Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA) and died 9 Jan 1906 in Wrightsville, Warren Co PA. Carl was buried 11 Jan 1906 at the Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA. According to his death certificate, Carl died of apoplexy (stroke).

 

Anna Maria Lind was born 16 Jan 1838 in Ingatorp, Sweden and died 4 Dec 1924 Wrightsville, Warren Co PA. She was buried 7 Dec 1924 in the Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA. Anna was the daughter of Hans Peter (Johanson) and Sarah Maria (Anderson or Andersdotter) Lind. According to her death certificate, she died of apoplexy (cerebral hemorrhage).

 

Carl Peter and Anna Maria had the following children:

 

1.     Oscar Albert, born 4 Sep 1860 Pittsfield, Warren Co PA, married Christine Matilda Sandburg 4 Sep 1884, died 29 Jul 1926 at his home near Youngsville, Warren Co PA, buried Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA.

2.     Emily Augusta, born 29 Jan 1862 Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA, died 29 Apr 1879 Warren Co PA, buried Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA.

3.     John Philip, born 2 Jul 1864 Pittsfield Twp Warren Co PA, married Augusta Johnson, died 3 May 1952 as he entered WCA Hospital, Jamestown NY, buried Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA. In his brother Oscars 1926 obituary, John is listed as being from Mead Run. Augusta Willemina Johnson was born 19 Aug 1863 in Rumskulla Sweden and died 11 Dec 1946 at their home in Wrightsville PA. She is buried next to her husband.

4.     Josephine Alberteen, born 19 Jan 1868 Warren Co PA, married Charles Malinberg, died 13 Feb 1934. In her brother Oscars 1926 obituary, Mrs. Charles Malmberg is listed as being from Spetz Hill.

5.     Axel Leander (Elic?), born 7 Oct 1873 Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA, married Hulda Marie Johnson 2 Jul 1896, died 28 Jan 1952 Warren General Hospital, Warren PA, buried Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA. Hulda was born 12 Jan 1876 in Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA and died 10 Sep 1932 at Warren General Hospital, Warren PA. She is buried next to her husband.

6.     Emily Lovisia, born 10 Dec 1884 Warren Co PA, married Luther Johnson 13 Aug 1904, died 4 Feb 1930. In her brother Oscars 1926 obituary, Mrs. Luther Johnson is listed as being from Wrightsville. According to Mr. Terry Barton, Emily as really the daughter of Frank (Anders Fredrick) and Lovisia Lind, Terry's great grandparents. Emily's mother died in childbirth and Emily was taken in by Charles and Anna Maria. She was legally adopted by them.

 

 

 

Oscar Albert Sandberg

 

Oscar Albert Sandberg was born on 4 Sep 1860 in Pittsfield, Warren Co PA. He married Christine Matilda Sandburg on 9 Apr 1883 (probably Warren Co PA). Oscar died 29 Jul 1926 at his home near Youngsville, Warren Co PA and is buried in the Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA. According to his death certificate, Oscar died from wood alcohol poisoning.

 

 

Obituary for Oscar Sandberg

Warren (PA) Evening Times, 30 Jul 1926

 

Oscar Sandberg of Mead Run was taken ill shortly after noon yesterday and at 9 oclock last evening passed away, despite the efforts of the physician who was summoned immediately. It is understood that the cause of his death was an attack of heart trouble.

Mr. Sandberg has for 25 years been a resident of Youngsville and vicinity, having been engaged in the lumbering business for the greater part of that time. Had he lived until September 4, he would have been 68 years of age. He was united in marriage on September 4, 1884, to Miss Christena Sandberg.

The deceased is survived by his wife, one son, Melton, at home; seven daughters, Mrs. Wilber Weaver, wife of Chief of Police Weaver, Youngsville; Mrs. Arthur Nelson, Mrs. J.E. Shambaugh, Mrs. Carl Anderson, and Miss Pearl Sandberg, Titusville; Miss Amanda Sandberg, at home, and Mrs. R.P. Shultz, Oil City; also two brothers, John Sandberg, Mead Run, and Elic Sandberg, Irvine, and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Malmberg, Spetz Hill and Mrs. Luther Johnson, Wrightsville.

A short prayer service will be held at the home Sunday afternoon at 12:30 oclock, followed by the funeral service at 2:30 in the Wrightsville church. Commitment will be made at the Wrightsville cemetery.

 

 

Christine Matilda Sandburg was born 17 Apr 1863 in Skede, Smland, Sweden and died 18 Feb 1948 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emma Nelson, Titusville, Crawford Co PA. She is buried in the Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA. She is the daughter of Swancy Magnus and Carrie/Katrina (Anderson) Sandburg. Her death certificate states she died from coronary occlusion (heart disease).

 

Obituary for Christine Matilda (Sandburg) Sandberg

Mrs. Christine Matilda Sandberg, aged 84 died at 11:20 a.m. yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur F. Nelson, 124 Union Street, after an illness of four weeks.

She was a daughter of the late S.M. and Carrie Sandberg and was born in Smoland, Sweden, April 17, 1863. She came to this country with her parents in 1869 and resided at Pittsfield until her marriage.

She was married to Oscar Sandberg September 4, 1884, at Freehold, Warren county, and spent her entire married life there. He died 21 years ago last July. Eight children survive: Mrs. Ellen Weaver and Mrs. R.P. Schultz of Oil City, Mrs. Amanda Smith, Mrs. Ellsworth Shambaugh, Mrs. Arthur Nelson and Mrs. Irvin Orwig of Titusville; Mrs. Carl Anderson and Milton Sandberg of Meadville.

There are also 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Axel Larson of Jamestown, N.Y., and a brother, Charles Sandberg of Youngsville. A son, Clyde Sandberg, died at the age of 12 in 1907.

She was a member of the Berea Lutheran church at Freehold and was the last surviving confirm and of its first confirmation class. She was a member of the S.F. & A. Lodge. She was loyal to the church and was a devoted mother, being happiest when with her family.

The body was prepared for burial at the E.A. Peterson Funeral Home and will be taken to the home of the daughter, Mrs. Nelson, this afternoon, where friends may call after 8 o'clock. Prayer service will be held at the home Saturday at 1 p.m. by Rev. George R. Kroon.

Funeral services will be held at Freehold church at 3 p.m. Saturday by Rev. Earl W. Carlson, assisted by Rev. Kroon with interment.

 

 

The children of Oscar and Christine were:

 

1.     Ellen L, born 14 May 1885 Warren Co PA, married Wilber Weaver 8 Feb 1905, died Feb 1978 Waterford (near Corry) PA. Wilber was the Chief of Police in Youngsville.

2.     Amanda Rose, born 21 Nov 1887 Warren Co PA, married Henry Smith 3 Sep 1931, died Jamestown NY.

3.     Minnie Albertine, born 16 Dec 1888 Wrightsville, Warren Co PA, married Reuben Peter Schultz 29 Feb 1920 Franklin, Venango Co PA, died 16 Jan 1962 Titusville, Venango Co PA, buried Rynd Farm Cemetery, Rouseville, Venango Co PA. Minnie was employed by the Pennsylvania Gas office in Oil City, PA. Please see the Schultz chapter for details on the descendants of this union.

4.     Lillian Oliva, born 14 Oct 1890 Warren Co PA, married J. Ellsworth Shambaugh 31 May 1919, died Titusville PA.

5.     Sigrid Helen, born 12 Apr 1893 Warren Co PA, married Carl Anderson, died 21 Jul 1952 Meadville PA. They owned the Meadville Bakery at one time.

6.     Clyde Melvin, born 8 Mar 1895 Freehold Twp, Warren Co PA, died 18 Feb 1907 near Youngsville, Warren Co PA, buried Berea/Lutheran/Swedish Cemetery, Pittsfield Twp, Warren Co PA.

7.     Emma Josephine, born 7 Apr 1897 Warren Co PA, married Arthur Nelson, died Oct 1974 Titusville, Crawford Co PA.

8.     Pearl Gertrude, born 8 Sep 1902 PA, married (1) Irvin H. Orwig, (2) Carl Anderson, died March 1982 Titusville, Crawford Co PA. Irvin, born 5 Jun 1889, was the son of James Bell and Alice Marie (Edwards) Orwig. Pearl's second marriage was to her brother-in-law Carl Anderson.

9.     Milton Glenn, born 17 Dec 1907 PA, married Ruth Sorenson 7 Sep 1929, died Meadville PA.

 

 

Berea Cemetery Information: According to Mr. Terry Barton, an extremely helpful person in Youngsville PA, the Berea cemetery has been referred to as the Berea, Lutheran, Swedish and sometimes Freehold Cemetery for some time. It is located 7 miles west of Youngsville on Rt. 6, at the intersection of Routes 6 and 958. This intersection is called "Three Point". The cemetery is located in Pittsfield Township, Warren Co PA.

 

Wrightsville Cemetery Information: According to Mr. Terry Barton, the cemetery is located in Wrightsville, Freehold Township, Warren Co PA.
