Revolutionary War Records for
the name Jesse Moore
Research conducted by William B. Moore,
Denver, CO. Dewey Decimal references are from the Denver CO Public Library, Denver, CO. |
These were the only four 'Jesse's' shown in researched military records. From the General Index to Revolutionary War Microfilm history and subsequent related references, including Muster, Pension, and Special Records. Roll 36, Drawer T-5115
|
MILITARY RECORDS (4 located) |
1st Pennsylvania Regiment, Private (Drw 30/7, Roll 785)
· three Service Records (SR) listings only, all dated in 1784,
· and all related to late makeup pay.
· signed for by a 'James Moore for his minor son, Jesse'.
· no Muster records could be found for this regiment.
· the so called 'Card Numbers' handwritten on these SR's have no known significance to any other known record reference. But that might be a good question to pose to the 'national' records people sometime.
(in any case if our Jesse died in 1815, and was fairly old then, he could not likely be this 'minor' Jesse some 48 years earlier ? ?)
2nd Pennsylvania Regiment, Drummer/Fifer (30/7, #784)
· some of this is confusing in that three of them are marked '2nd Regiment, but are otherwise identical to the cards of Jesse of the 1st Penn Reg.
· and these three all were signed for by father James in 1784.
· I think the Paymaster just used three of the wrong cards.
· otherwise all of the muster records indicate a man who accepted his own pay, and made his mark in some cases.
· local people say that there may be other records in the national archives pertaining to any of these SR's so maybe a Search Request is in order to try to learn more;
· nothing in the Pensions Section or Misc. Section on this Jesse.
· Muster Records (18/4, # 80) are attached for:
Nov/Dec 1778 - Col. Stewart's Co., commanded by Col. Stewart
Jan/Feb 1779 - Capt. Gosner's Co. " by Col. Stewart
May/June 1779 - Capt. Bankson's Co. " by Col. Walter Stewart.
4th Virginia Regiment, Private (30/9, #975)
· this is a combination of Pay and Muster Records. (18/4, #100)
· from April thru July 1777 he seems to have been in Capt. Holcomb's Co. commanded by Col. Thomas Elliott, then transferred, and;
· from Aug. 1777 thru Feb. 1778 was with Capt. Thomas Ridley's Co.
· commanded by Col. Robert Lawson.
· but I don't find anything which ties this Jesse to the one known pension records we have (Record # S.38342).
5th South Carolina Regiment, ?no rank? (30/8, #885)
·
nothing in the Muster Records file (184/#89) for this
regiment.

VIRGINIA |
1640:
Stafford formed – included all Potomac River watershed land.
1730:
Stafford County & King George Counties split - Prince William County
formed.
1742:
Fairfax County formed from Prince William County.
1757:
Loudoun County formed from western Fairfax County. It was divided into two
parishes: Cameron and Shelburne, with Goose Creek being the dividing line
between them.
1759:
Fauquier County formed from Prince William County.
The
Northern Neck of Virginia comprised of land between the Potomac River to the
north and the Rappahannock River to the south.
This land was granted to several individuals, including Lord John
Culpeper and Thomas Culpeper, by King Charles II, the exiled son of executed
King Charles I, for their support. By
1681, Lord Thomas Culpeper had acquired/purchased all the patents and was the
sole proprietor of the Northern Neck lands.
These lands were re-granted to Lord Culpeper in 1688 who passed it onto
his daughter on his death and then onto his son Lord Thomas Fairfax.
Frances Moore, Merchant from
Dublin, Ireland
The following was taken directly
from Marriages of Richmond Co VA, 1668-1853; George H.S. King, 1964
(amplifications added by Joyce Browning noted in [ ] ):
FRANCES MOORE (1660-1718) married in 170? ANN, probably nee Harbin; this surname appears inconspicuously on the Richmond Co records. Francis Moore, merchant of Dublin, Ireland, and owner of the Dublin Merchant, imported many indentured servants to VA beginning in 1681. He appears frequently on the records of Rappahannock, Essex and Richmond Cos and in 1703-1706 settled in Essex Co and was granted certificates for thousands of acres of land for the transportation of hundreds of indebted servants into Rappahannock River counties. On 20 May 1705 stating his age to be “45 or thereabouts,” he made a deposition in Essex Co in regard to certain “servants . . . he brought into this Colony . . . in the ship called the Dublin Merchant . . .in Mar 1699. In 1701 he acquired a plantation in Essex Co and died intestate in 1718. His estate descended to his eldest son and heir, Francis Moore (1711-1796) who sold it in 1739. Francis and Ann Moore had four children, viz:
(a) Col. Francis Moore (1711-1796)
who appears prominently in the records of Orange Co [born 1739; married
Elizabeth who predeceased him and left a large family],

[1] Fairfax, Thomas, 6th Baron Fairfax of Cameron (1693-1781), Scottish peer and Virginia landowner, born in Kent, England, and educated at the University of Oxford. He inherited from his mother, the daughter of Baron Thomas Culpeper, governor of Virginia, estates in Virginia constituting one-fourth of the entire colony. In 1735, when the possibility arose that the grant would be revoked by the Crown, Fairfax visited America, had the lands surveyed, and defended his claims, in which he was confirmed in 1745. He settled in Virginia in 1747 and built a home in the Shenandoah Valley on lands surveyed by George Washington. During the American Revolution, Fairfax remained a firm Loyalist. [2] Michaelmas, old English name
for the feast day of Saint Michael and All Angels, on September 29. The date is
believed to have been selected because it is the anniversary of the dedication
of the Church of Saint Michael and All Angels on the Salarian Way in Rome in
the 6th century. In England, Michaelmas is one of the quarter days,
traditionally marked by the election of magistrates, the beginning of the legal
and university terms, and the collection of quarterly rents. "Michaelmas," Microsoft® Encarta®

[3] George II (of Great Britain) (1683-1760), king of Great Britain (1727-60), and elector of Hannover (1727-60), the son of King George I. George was born at Herrenhausen Palace in Hannover (now in Lower Saxony state, Germany) on November 10, 1683, and he grew up a German prince. In 1705 he married Caroline of Ansbach, an intelligent woman who wielded great influence over her husband and thereby on government. Like his father, George II was more interested in Hannover than in Great Britain, and during his many absences from London Caroline frequently acted as regent. During the war of the Austrian Succession (1740-48), the king subordinated the interests of Great Britain to those of his German principality. This policy was unpopular in Great Britain, but the king won admiration for his courage at the Battle of Dettingen in Bavaria (1743), the last engagement in which a British monarch participated in person. George II contributed to the material progress of Great Britain, mainly because he was shrewd enough to listen to his wife and heed the advice of his ministers. He retained Sir Robert Walpole as chief minister only upon Caroline's insistence, and he later relied on Henry Pelham, and, toward the end of his reign, William Pitt the Elder, although he originally had a great dislike for him. George's reign was marked by the suppression of the last major Jacobite rebellion (see Jacobites) and by the successful prosecution—at Pitt's initiative—of the Seven Years' War. He was succeeded by his grandson George III. George died at Kensington Palace, London, on October 25, 1760. the Testator’s will this Deponent was sent for and subscribed the same as a
witness and thought the Testator to be to be sober and sensible and signed and

that William, aged “about 50” in 1762, was born in approximately 1712.
5 Aug 1762 Prince William Co VA
Deposition, Deed Book P (1761-1764), Pg 233: “Jesse Moore of full age, deposeth that he worked at

“full age” in 1762, was at least 18-20 at the time, hence he was born no later
than 1740, possibly earlier.

Will of Jeremiah Moore
Fairfax Co VA
Will Book K, page 271
Will written 1
Aug 1814, probated 20 Mar 1815
To all to whom these presents may come,
or in any wise concern, know ye that I, Jeremiah Moore, of the County of
Fairfax, and Commonwealth of Virginia, being in good health, and enjoying the
full exercise of my intellectual faculties, do make and ordain this my last
Will and Testament, in the following form and manner, that is in the first
place to say: That so soon after my
death as my son John Moore, shall deliver up to my executrix hereafter names,
all notes, Bonds, obligations and agreements or memorandums for money due from
me to him; that then he shall forever
hold and possess in fee simple, all that part of the Tract of land on which I
now live, that lies South of Ellzeys Churchroad, as fully as if I had, conveyed
the same to him by Indenture, under my hand and seal,-2nd; it is my will that my several married
children hold and possess such things as I gave them at the time of their
marriage; or since, which articles, stand charged to them in my Book of
Accounts, for things given to them, at the time of these marriages; but that these sums may be accurately known,
Jesse Moore, is to be charged with L275.8.7.
Francis Moore with L155.18.7.,
Angelina Hunter with L149., John
Moore L105.1.11; Ammishaddia Moore with
L135.17., Margaret F. Smith with
L65.-William F. Moore with L90.4., these several sums are notwithstanding to be
accounted for in the general division of my Estate, after the death of my wife
shall take place, but there is no interest to be charged on them. But further I lately purchased a Mill in
Jefferson County for which I paid $1500 Dollars and put the Mill into the hands
of Jesse Moore and Francis Moore, and if they pay the aforesaid sum of $1500,
and the interest thereof, one half of the mill is to be vested in Francis Moore
and the other half in Jesse Moore’s children, reserving to Jesse Moore the use
of the property during his natural life, but to render this part of my will
firm and secure, the Mill aforesaid to Jesse Moore’s heirs and Francis Moore,
they are also to pay the remaining part of the purchase money for which I have
given my obligation so that my Estate shall not be liable for any part of the
debt that remains to be paid, five hundred dollars reserved out of the fifteen
hundred, said to be paid my Estate is to when a Title to the Mill is made, and
then Jesse Moore, and Francis Moore will each owe me $750 Dollars, each with
interest from the first day of July 1814 till paid and when the same is paid,
either to me or my Heirs, the Mill is to be vested wholly in them as
aforesaid. John Moore is indebted to me
for Lucy and her children $375 Dollars, with interest thereon, from the twenty
fifth day of December 1813, this debt is a part of my Estate, to be accounted
of in the general distribution after the death of my wife, over and above what
John has been already charged with; I
give unto my Daughter Elizabeth S. Moore, a Negro girl named Synia, price three
hundred dollars; one horse and saddle
price Seventy Dollars, and Feather Bed, her choice of all in the House, with
its furniture, price forty dollars, one Cow and Calf price fifteen dollars,
there articles to be charged to her as part of my Estate, and I also give her a
legacy of Twenty dollars for every year she has lived in my family since she
was twenty years old, this is for services done in the family, and is not to be
charged as any part of my estate.
I
give unto my daughter Nancy T. Moore, one Negro girl named Sinae, valued at
three hundred dollars, and the same articles over and above as I have given her
sister Elizabeth, and to the same value, and the same legacy of twenty Dollars
a year since she was Twenty years old, the Twenty dollars a year not to be
charged to her as part of my estate but the other articles are, in the general
distribution, after the death of her mother.
With cash in hand and bonds and notes due me amounting to about Six
thousand dollars, I leave to settle in the first place my guardianship account
for my for my ward Julyan Rowls and as the whole of these debts will be due by
the first day of July next, I wish the money to be collected and the settlement
with the court to be made as soon as possible, the money I have received
belonging to this orphan, may be seen as to the sum and the time it was
received stated in my Book of Accounts.,-I give unto my son Francis Moore,
Condens, Concordance, Robertson Ecclestical researches and Benedicts History of
the Baptists, not because he is my Son, but because he is a preacher for altho
preaching is not a loosing Business, still he that would discharge this duty in
the fear of God, will find it a heavy check, on all worldly interests. That part of my Estate that is now in the
hands of my Daughter Margret F. Smith, or that may fall to her, in the general
distribution of my Estate, I leave in Trust for her use in the hands of Francis
Moore, Ammishaddia Moore, William F Moore and George W. Hunter, and if anything
remains, in their hands, at her death, the same shall be equally divided
amongst her children.
That
proportion of my Estate that now is in the hands of my Son, John Moore, I give
him, with what may finally fall to him, in the general division to be yet made,
all the remainder of my Estate I give unto my Beloved wife Lydia Moore, for and
during her natural life and constitute her whole and sole Executrix for that
time of this my last Will and Testament, but she shall not be obliged to take
out letters of Administration, give any Security, or have any appraisement
whatever, the Law may say to the contrary notwithstanding; for I have more confidence in her Justice,
integrity and uprightness than in all the Courts that ever set, either in this
Commonwealth or else where the will may be recorded for safekeeping but nothing
more shall be done during her having the direction of my affairs; there are no debts to pay, but ample
provision is made, to meet, that due to my Ward, already mentioned, being all that
can effect me.
And,
it is further my will, that as soon after her death as possible, that Francis
Moore, Ammishaddia Moore and George W. Hunter shall, in the presents of all the
Heirs, who will please to attend, take a complete inventory of all things she
may leave behind at her death, and then proceed to divide the same as all
concerned may think best; and when no division can take place, proceed to sell
the article that cannot be divided, as well the Land as anything else, which
they are hereby fully authorized to do and the distribution of all to be so
made as including what each one has already received, a fair and equal division
of the whole may be had, but no commission shall be given to the trustees above
mentioned for the service they may render in taking the Account or dividing the
Estate. The Situation of the Laws, at
present and the State of this unhappy Country, generally leaves no opportunity
to say anything abut that part of my family that are Slaves by law. I must leave them therefore to the mercy of
my Children, and hope they will do to and for them what is right. This being my Will, written with my own
hand, and sealed with my Seal, is and shall be to all intents and purposes my
last Will and Testament given under my hand and Seal this first day of August,
one thousand eight hundred fourteen.
(Signed) Jeremiah Moore SEAL
At a
Court held for Fairfax County, the 20th day of March 1815, this last
Will and Testament of Jeremiah Moore, deceased, was presented in court by Lydia
Moore, the Executrix therein named who made oath thereto and the same being
