Isaac Kinney (Jr) was the father of Susan Kinney, the wife of John R. Harrod.  Isaac Kinney was most likely born on or near the DelMarVa Peninsula. The earliest reference to a Kinney in the area is 1666 - although it is unknown if this Kinney is an ancestor to our clan.  According to regional records, Isaac and Amelia (Taylor) Kinney and a number of his wife Amelia’s brothers sold their land and moved from Somerset Co MD (an area just west of present day Ocean City MD) to Bracken Co KY between 1800 and 1810.   It was in approximately 1805 that Susan Kinney, wife of John R. Harrod, was born to Isaac Kinney and Amelia Taylor.   Susan was the mother of Mary (Molly) Harrod.  Mary (Mollie) married Alexander Mitchell, the grandfather of Barbara Mitchell Moore.

William Kinney

 

William Kinney first appears in the 1733 Somerset Co MD tax records (see below) and listed as owning land in the Naticoke 100 (tracts included Kennys Chance, Good Neighborhood and Descarte).  He married a Mary ____.  William gave Isaac, his son, 50 acres of the tract Descarte located on the branch of Broad Creek on 17 Jan 1755. His will was written on 12 May 1760 and probated in Somerset Co MD on 1 Jun 1771,  Book EB-4/15.  He must not have included Mary in his will to the extent she expected/wanted as she is listed as approaching the Probate Court and demanding 1/3 of his estate.  It is interesting to note that his son Isaac is not mentioned in his will either.

 

Abstract of William’s will: “To son William: tracts Kennys Chance, Good Neighborhood, part of Descarte (desc), dwelling plantation.  If no heirs to son Joseph, pt of Descarte, exec.  To dau Ann.  Witness: James Windsor, John Young, George Bacon.  Came widow Mary Kinney, demands 1/3rds.”

Isaac Kenney (Sr)

 

Isaac Kenney (Sr) died in Sussex Co DE (the county just north of the Ocean City, MD/Fenwick Island DE state line) between January and April 1783.  The name of his wife is unknown.  His will was abstracted in the Calendar of Sussex Co DE Probate Records:  Isaac Kenney, Planter.  Page 148.  Will written Jan 10 1783, probated April 16 1783.  Heirs: sons Elijah, Josiah, Isaac and William Kenney, daughters Tabitha Kenney, Betty Greer, Lovey Benston.  Executors: son Elijah, Kenney, Samuel Kellam.  Archives Volume A82, pages 58-59.  Reg. of Wills Liber D, Folios 12-13.  Estate settled by Elijah Kenney, surviving executor, on Sept 6, 1796.

Isaac Kinney (Jr)

 

Isaac (Jr) was born in Maryland in approximately 1765.  Isaac first married Amelia Taylor, daughter of Abraham and Mary Taylor (See below for more details on the Taylor genealogy).  Between 1800 (where they appear in the Somerset Co MD census) and 1810 (where they appear in the Bracken Co KY census), Isaac, Amelia and Amelia’s two brothers, Bartholomew and Abraham migrated to Bracken Co KY.  Amelia died between 1840 and 1850.  On 2 Apr 1852 at the age 87, Isaac married an Ann Brion (age 66) in Bracken Co KY.  Two years earlier in the 1850 census, Ann Brion is listed as the only other member of Isaac’s household.   Isaac died in Bracken Co KY in 1854 at the age of 89. 

 

Isaac had a large family, including numerous daughters.  In the 1810 Bracken Co KY census, Isaac and his wife Amelia Taylor list 8 daughters and 1 son.  Other than his second wife Anny (nee Brion), daughter Milly (Garrard) and son Isaac, he unfortunately did not mention any of his other children by name in his will. 

 

Isaac Jr’s short will, written 22 Jan 1854 and probated Apr 1857 can be found in Bracken Co KY Will Book H, page 32: “1st  I desire that sufficient amount of my perishable part of my estate be immediately sold after my decease to pay all my just debts & funeral expenses and after the said expenses I devise that all my children shall have one dollar a piece having here to fore received their part excepting Milly Garrard and Milly Garrard I bequeath to her 1/2 of the balance of my perishable part of my estate the other 1/2 I give to my wife Anny Kenney.      ...mentions son Isaac...   Witness by J.B. Smitson and Hudson W. Rice.”  There was a note that J. B. Smitson was deceased when it came time to prove the will.

 

The known children of Isaac Kinney (Jr) and Amelia Taylor are:

 

1) Winder, born 23 Mar 1797 MD, married Sarah Walters 28 Oct. 1818 Bracken Co KY, died 30 Jan 1878 Claysville KY (per information received from an Ann Whittle @ AWhittle@aol.com in 8/2003).

2) Susan, born circa 1805 Bracken Co KY.  She married 1^st, Joel W. Hamilton 16 Nov 1825 Bracken Co KY and 2nd John R. Harrod 11 Oct 1841 Bracken Co KY.  Susan died circa 1849 - possibly giving birth to their last daughter as she is not listed in the 1850 census.  Please see the Harrod chapter for more information on this union and their descendants.

3) Milly (aka Amelia, probably after her mother), married a Garrard.

4) Isaac.

Abraham Taylor was a headright for John Walton and John Bagnall in Westmoreland Co, VA, along with John Elsey and others, 10 Jun 1654, and an Abraham Taylor, perhaps the same one, was a headright for John Elsey in Northampton Co, VA, 33 Nov 1660, purchased land east of present Harborton in 1674 and 1677, married first , 1661, Debora Kechine, second Bridgett ___; issue of first wife: (1) John , (2) William, (3) Abraham, (4) Thomas. 

 

John Taylor (1) born ? died 1698, of Pungoteague, Accomack Co VA, son of Abraham and Debora (Kechine) Taylor, married ??? and had issue: (a) Bartholomew, (b) John, married Tabitha and had children Bartholomew and Levin, (c) Abraham, (d) William Ketchme (Kechine?), (e) Deborah, (f) Mary.  Sons were under 18, daughters under 16 in 1698.  Abraham and William Ketchme were in Somerset Co by 1719 when they sold their inherited VA land to brother John.  Will of John Taylor: written 1 Apr 1698, probated 7 Jun 1698 Nottingham, Accomack Co VA Wills, page 23.

 

William Ketchme Taylor (1d) born ? died 1773, son of John Taylor of Pungoteague (?), was in household of John Huffington in Nanticoke Hd in 1723 and 1724; purchased in 1725 from John Huffington a tract called Round Pond (later Mill Pond) at head of Miery Branch which flows into Naticoke River; left parts of Round Pond to sons James, Abraham and Isaac, resurveyed to Taylors Addition (this was evidently not the same tract owned by Abraham (1c) and William (1c?4) which was 50 acres only and which later belonged to Ezekiel Taylor; Abraham’s (1d?1) share of Taylors Addition was described as resurvey of Round Pond.  William Taylor married Sarah ____ and had issue: (1) Abraham born 5 Mar 1726/7, (2) James, (3) Isaac, (4) Ann, who married _____ Moore, (5) Betty, who married ____Wailes, (6) Mary, who married ____ Hitch, (7) Phyllis, born 11 Nov 1742.  Taylor names also in will grandchildren William Taylor, Phyllis Taylor, Thomas Moore, William Wailes, and Betty Hitch.  Will of William Taylor: written 10 Mar 1770, probated 19 Oct 1773, Somerset Co Wills EB-4:179-180.

KENNEY, Elijah (1784 to 17 Aug 1787) Hired negro woman, Flora, from Nelms in 1784 and Tamor in 1786 and bought 1bushel corn.  Total 8 pounds/5 shillings/0 pence.  Nelms got judgment in 1787 for /19/6 after getting credit for an overcharge of 4/5/6.

KENNEY, Isaac (20 Apr 1767 to 13 Feb 1768) Purchased a bunch of cordage for 0/2/0 and paid with a bushel of corn in 1768 (same as Wm below).

Record 192 (page 150).  Dated 26 Feb 1778.  Wm Polk of Sussex Co, from Joseph and William Kinney, formerly of Sussex Co, planters.  A tract of land (50 acres) called Kinney’s Chance for 100 pounds.  A referenced, adjoining tract called the “Desert” fell to said Joseph and William by the will of their father William Kinney. See Record 453 below.

Record 345 (page 183).  Dated 1 Dec 1778.  Regards two parcels in the “forrest, one of which (called Kinnys Lott) was taken up by Lazuras Kinny formerly in the Province of MD and patented to said Kinny under the commissioners of MD in 1716 for 200 acres”.

Record 453 (page 211).  Dated 2 Aug 1782.  Wm Polk from Isaac Kinney, both of Little Creek Hundred.  Isaac Kinney, in obedience to a decree of the Court of Chancery of Sussex Co and for 5 shillings, releases and grants eastern dividend of part of a tract called Desert (50 acres) in Little Creek Hundred and is the same which Isaac Kinney holds by virtue of a deed from E. Caldwell and represented in plot drawn.

Record 222 (Page 33) Deed dated 4 Feb 1786.  Ebenezer Jones planter of Sussex & Ann his wife sell to John Darby planter of Sussex for 200 pounds: tract in Sussex, 76 acres, part of “Good Hope” on the N side Sheep Pen Br which issues out of head of Indian R on Dagsberry Hund where afsd Ebenezer Jones dwells, patented to Simon Kollock by Maryland by virtue of assignment of certificate of survey by John Calwell to afsd Simon Kollock, and Simon Kollock sold to Lazareth Kenny; & Kenny (deed in Wocester Co) sold “Good Hope” to Ebenezer Jones Sr who died intestate......Acknowledged 20 Feb 1786.

Record 226 (Page 343) Deed dated 20 Jan 178.  Thomas Jones sells to Ebenezer/Abenezer Jones, both yeomen of Sussex, for 50 pounds and fatherly love, part of tract “Good Hope” on N side of a branch issuing out of the Indian R, alias Baltimore R, called the Great Cypress Br, patented to Simon Kollock by assignment of a certificate from John Caldwell, conveyed by Kollock to Lazarus Kenny; & by Kenny to Abenezer Jones......Acknowledged 20 Feb 1786.

Deed Bk D p. 387:  Dated 26 Oct 1813 - John Apple and Catherine his wife of Clermont Co Ohio to Isaac Kenney of Bracken for $800 tract of land on Locust Creek no acreage mentioned.

 

Deed Book E p. 88:  Dated 16 March 1815 - Samuel Hamilton and Della his wife of Bracken to Isaac Kenney of Bracken for $636 63 acres on Locust Creek.

Deed Bk J p. 116:  Dated 8 August 1829 - John Kizer (Kiser another place) of Bourbon Co KY to Isaac Kenney and Winder Kenney of Bracken for $1000 a parcel of land including a mill on the south bank of the North Fork of Licking River.

 

Deed Bk K p. 9:  Dated 18 March 1834 - Isaac Kenney of Bracken to Abraham Patterson for $250.00 tract on the North Fork part of tract Kenney now lives on.

 

Deed Bk M p. 373:  Dated 8 Aug 1840 - Isaac Kenney and Amelia his wife to John Culp sold tract of land on North Fork of Licking River including a mill contained 100 acres.

 

Deed Bk Q p. 582:  Dated 10 March 1850 - Isaac Kenney Sen. to Isaac Kenney Jr. for $1500 land on North Fork of Licking River purchased from Thomas Howard less that sold to Abraham Patterson.
