BRADY
BRADY. (1) Irish:
Anglicized form of Gaelic. O Bradaigh
‘descendant of Bradach’, a byname the meaning of which is not clear. It is unlikely to be connected with Gael.
Bradach thieving, dishonest, which has a short first vowel. (2) English: nickname for a person with
large or wide-set eyes, from OE brad
broad + eage eye. (3) English: habitation name from some place
known as ‘broad island’, from OE brad
broad + eg island. (4) English: topographic name for someone
who lived by a broad enclosure, from OE brad
broad + (ge)hoeg enclosure. Variations: Bradey, Bradie, Bready, (of 1
only) O’Brady, (of 2-4 only) Broady, Broadie.
Excerpted from A Dictionary of Surnames by Patrick
Hanks and Flavia Hodges, Oxford University Press, Oxford NY 1988.
Charles Brady was born circa 1750 in VA and died in circa 1797 in Garrard Co KY. Charles died intestate. The settlement of his estate is recorded in Garrard Co KY Will Book “A”, page 108. His inventory is recorded on pages 98 and 117. Charles married a Rebecca Anderson (born circa 1748, died circa 1841) in approximately 1772 in King George Co VA. After Charles died at age 47, Rebecca married a second time to James Bailey. James and Rebecca resided in Mercer Co KY where she died in June 1841 at age 93.
The known children of Charles and Rebecca (Anderson) Brady were:
1. William Anderson, born 1773 King George Co VA.
2. Thomas Anderson, born 18 Apr 1774 King George Co VA, married Elizabeth Bailey 4 Jun 1796 Madison Co KY (other sources say they were married in VA), died circa 1854 Texas, Washington Co KY. He is buried in the Old Brady Cemetery (located on the Alvin Black farm on the Mackville/Texas Pike), Texas, Washington Co KY. Thomas was a hatter by trade.
3. Charles Anderson, born 1776, King George Co VA.
4. Stephen Anderson, born 1778, King George Co VA.
5. Martha Anderson, born 1780, King George Co VA.
Thomas Anderson Brady was born in King George Co VA on 18 Apr 1774. His occupation was a hatter (hat maker). He married an Elizabeth Bailey (circa 1773–1833) in Madison Co KY (or possibly VA) on 4 Jun 1796. The family had their first 5 children in Madison Co KY. Between 1804 and 1806, the family moved to Lincoln Co KY where they had their final 5 children. Sometime after 1813 the family of ten children moved to the Texas/Mackville area in Washington Co KY.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas (b circa 1747 VA, died before 30 May 1829 KY) and Mary (born circa 1751 VA, died before 1829) Bailey of Virginia.
Thomas and Elizabeth acquired a great deal of land in and around the Texas/Mackville community….for their son Milton, before his death in 1888, purchased all of his brothers and sisters’ shares of their parents land – totally over 2,000 acres.
Texas, KY – the town Thomas Anderson Brady lived and died in - is an interesting community. Texas is located about halfway between Perrysville and Springfield on Highway 150. A local with whom I corresponded told me that the town sign is continually stolen by tourists. The cemetery in which a number of Brady’s are buried is called the “Brady Cemetery” located on old Brady homestead which is now known as Alvin Black’s farm on the Texas-Mackville Pike.
The known children of Thomas Anderson and Elizabeth (Bailey) Brady were:
1. Thomas, born circa 1796 Madison or Lincoln Co KY, married Elizabeth Drury.
2. Charles, born circa 1798 Madison or Washington Co KY, married Mahaley Graves 19 Dec 1823.
3. Charlotte, born circa 1800 Madison or Washington Co KY, married Mr. Watts.
4. John, born circa 1802 Madison or Lincoln Co KY.
5. William, born circa 1804 Madison or Lincoln Co KY, married Ann Watts.
6. Martha, born circa 1806 Texas, Lincoln Co KY.
7. James Anderson, born 13 Mar 1808 Lincoln Co KY, married Debby Kimberlin 23 Aug 1831 Washington Co KY, died 25 Apr 1889 Washington Co KY, buried Brady Family Cemetery. She is the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Fowler) Kimberlin.
8. Milton Anderson, born 13 Jan 1810 Lincoln Co (some sources say Mercer Co KY, others say Texas, Washington Co KY) KY, married Eliza Smock 3 Oct 1831 Campbellsville, Washington Co KY. After Eliza died 27 Aug 1868, Milton remarried a Martha Turner on 28 Oct 1869 (location unknown). He died 10 Apr 1888 Campbellsville, Washington Co KY. He is buried next to his first wife, Eliza Smock, on the old Brady homestead in the “Old Brady Cemetery” (now known as the Alvin Black farm on the Mackville/Texas Pike), Texas, Washington Co KY.
9. Lindsay Anderson, born 11 June 1811 Lincoln Co KY, married Elizabeth Ann Hendrickson Oct 1831, converted to Mormonism in 1835, left Washington Co KY 1837 for Livingston Co MO to live with the main body of the Mormon Church. In 1850 he migrated with Brigham Young westward to Salt Lake City, UT. He married Susannah Ward Allen in 1852 and Caroline Johnson in 1863. In Salt Lake City, hundreds of Brady’s claim him as their patriarch. Lindsay died 26/27 June 1885.
10. Stephen Anderson, born circa 3 Feb 1813 Lincoln Co KY, died 28 Feb 1885 or 1888, married Patsey Elder.
Milton Anderson Brady was born on
Lincoln Co KY on Jan 13, 1810. Milton
married Eliza Smock (born Jul 17 1814 in Virginia, Mercer Co KY) on 3 Oct 1831
in Campbellsville, Washington Co KY.
Eliza was the daughter of Pieter and Judith Campbell Smock. Thanks to the research of others, I have
obtained an exhaustive genealogy of this Smock ancestry – all the way back to
the immigrant Hendrick Matthyse Smock who was born in circa 1630 in
Netherlands. Please find the ancestral information on the Smock surname in the Smock chapter.
After Eliza Smock Brady died on 27 Aug 1868, Milton married a second time to a Martha Turner (born circa 1812) on 28 Oct 1869.
Milton and Eliza resided on 1,000 acres of land on the Beech Fork (River) in the Texas (Washington Co KY) area. Before his death, Milton bought all of his brothers and sisters shares of the original land and owned over 2,000 acres of Washington County land. Milton died Apr 10 1888. They are both buried in the Brady Cemetery, Texas, Washington Co KY.
The known children of Milton Anderson and Eliza (Smock) Brady were:
1. John Anderson, born 12 Sep 1832 Louisville, Jefferson Co KY, married Martha F. Peter 14 Oct 1856 (location unknown). Was a doctor and resident of Washington Co KY and later moved to Louisville KY and from there to Kansas. Joined Company “I”, 1st KY Calvary in July 1861 which was organized at Mackville. According to historical records, there was much resentment around Mackville over the organization of this Unionist Company and the day the men were lined up to ride off, they were fired upon from the crowd. Dr. John Anderson Brady served enrolled as a surgeon for the First Kentucky Cavalry Regiment (Union Army) at its organization in October 1861 and continued until his resignation on December 26, 1962. According to a Springfield Sun (date unknown) newspaper account, he “was an educated and accomplished physician, and a thoroughly cultivated gentleman.”
2. Lavina, born 10 Apr 1834 near Texas, Washington Co KY, married Thomas Brady (relation unknown) and died 6 Jul 1861.
3. Marion, born 23 Sep 1837 Washington Co KY. He enlisted into the Union Calvary at the Texas PostOffice on Sep 29 1861 and was mustered into Company “A” 5th KY Calvary as a Sergeant in Columbia, Maury Co TN. Served 3 years before being wounded. Received an $8/month pension. Following his return he married Jamima Inman 1 Mar 1864 (location unknown). Marion died 22 Sep 1900 (location known).
4. Thomas, born Sep 1839 Washington Co KY and married Malvina ____________.
5. Elizabeth, born 17 Jul 1840 Springfield, Washington Co KY, married Granville Mansfield Bracken 1 Sep 1862 Washington Co KY, died 2 Dec 1879 Hutchinson, Reno Co KS, buried Eastside Cemetery, Hutchinson, Reno Co KS.
6. Catherine (aka Kate), born circa 1843 Washington Co KY, married George Elliott, died circa 1880.
7. Stephen Carter, born circa 1846 Washington Co KY, died circa 1876.
8. Eveline, born circa 1848 Washington Co KY, married Lee M. Hall.
9. Charles Lindsay, born 2 Apr 1852 Washington Co KY, died 3 Mar 1876.
10. Clay, born circa 1854 Washington Co KY, married Emma Bland.
11. Henry H., born 7 Mar 1853 Washington Co KY.
Elizabeth was born 17 Jul 1840 in
Springfield, Washington Co KY, married Granville Mansfield Bracken 1 Sep 1862
Washington Co KY, died 2 Dec 1879 Hutchinson, Reno Co KS, buried Eastside
Cemetery, Hutchinson, Reno Co KS. Please
see the “Bracken” chapter for more
information about this union and their descendants.
