Father of George Edward Powell

BIRTH: date estimated from 1881 & 1891 Census- Llangwm -age 65/75 (b. 1816),  Birthplace is i n question.

        - Birthplace listed in 1881 Census (Llangwm) was noted as Llandenny; 1891 Census reco rds lists birthplace as Gwehelog, a locality near Llandenny.  Birthplace also listed as Usk i n 1861 Census and Llandenny in 1971 Census

CHRISTENING/BAPT: Baptism found in IGI search (1999) in the Bishops Transcripts for Usk, Monm outhshire           -  IGI lists christening date as 23 Jul. 1815 based on  source informatio n from Bishops Transcripts of the Usk Parish, Monmouthshre (Source Call # 0104921, Printout C all # 0883650)

!!HOWEVER!! Two OTHER IGI records were also found for this same? James son of Mary a nd John Powell in Usk, Monmouth (1815) with conflicting information.  They are as follows:

      1. A record taken from the records of the Logan Temple (LDS) (sealings for the dead?) ( Film # 538218) where James' christening is recorded as 23 FEB 1815 (not 23 Jul) - father-Joh n Powell, mother-Mrs. Mary Powell

      2.  Another record taken from the records of the Manti temple (LDS) (endowments?) (Fil m # 538009, pg 149, Ref # 3060) where James' BIRTH (not Christening ) is recorded as 23 FEB 1 815 (not Jul) - father-John Powell, mother-Mary.

There appears to be a mixup regarding months of Feb (2) and Jul (7) either in th e Temple records or in the Transcripts or the printout transcription.

*TO BE DONE:

        1. Search actual BTS AND printouts of Llandenny, Gwehelog & Usk to find correct dat e of christening (Feb or Jul 23, 1815) and confirm that the James Powell found in Usk is th e right one.

        2. There are apparently no church records available at FHS for Gwehelog but there i s apparently a Methodist Church there as there is a record of transcribed cemetary inscriptio ns for that cemetary (should also check this source for Powell names).

         3. Death Certificate - Oct 1893

Marriage Notes for JAMES POWELL and ELLEN PERROTT:

[Powell-James.FTW]

Marriage date obtained by Mrs. Barbara Williams (in Oct/Nov. 1999) in a search on behalf of W .C.Cook (marriage place not noted).  Marriage was found to be 27 Mar. 1873.   HOWEVER.... th e 1881 Census of Llangeview and 1891 Census of Llangwm list a daughter , Alice aged 10 and 2 0 yrs respectively (i.e. born 1971 .. 2 yrs before the marriage).  The 1871 Census of Llangw m lists James as single and living with his parents also confirming a marriage date later tha n 1871.   Census records show the next oldest sibling to Alice  (brother Victor James) to b e 5 years her younger (b. 1876) while remaining children were regularly spaced about 1 to 2 y rs apart.  It is likely that Alice was a product of a previous marriage of one or the other p arent or was the illigitimate daughter  of one of them (later adopted?) or an adopted child.

Notes for MARY JANE POWELL:

[Powell-James.FTW]

Birth: estimate from 1881 census (age 27) (1854?)- Llangwm, Ucha was in

error.  Chr. indicates birth was in 1849 ( probably didn't want to

tell the census taker her age! She was actually 31.)

       - 1871 Census (5) lists her as 19 (b. 1852?) again probably in error.

!Chr: - from Llangwm Parish Record ( Bishops Transcript) (2)

Residence: born onto Pentre Farm (apparently owned by her father)

     - 1871 Census (5) finds her living at home (age 19)- single

     - 1881 Census she is again at home (age listed as 27) - Unmarried

Occupation listed as Dairy Maid (1881 census)

Lived at Pentre Farm with her family from birth to 1881.

Marriage: - unmarried in 1881 (Census) but not found in the 1891 Census.

            Therefore possibly married before 1891.
