Thomas Johns and his wife Caroline, came to New Zealand aboard the "Camperdown" which left England on 14 April, 1876 and arrived at Nelson on 4 July, 1876.   With the couple were their daughter Elizabeth then aged 17 and their seven sons:  Thomas aged 15, James aged 12, Lewis William aged 10, Robert aged 8, Henry aged 5, Edward aged 3 and Hubert who was just 6 months old.  Caroline was two months pregnant at the time the family left England.

 

The cost of bringing the family to New Zealand was 116 pounds.   This amount is calculated at 16 pounds per adult 12 years and over and 9 pounds per child.   Infants apparently free.   Thomas paid the sum of 9 pounds towards that cost, one of only a few families on the ship who contributed to their fares.

 

It is probable that the family disembarked at Nelson considering their destination was the Canterbury Plains.

 

The publication "White Wings" describes the ship and the voyage:   "The Camperdown, a fine modern ship of 1487 tons, made one voyage only to New Zealand under charter to Shaw Saville and Albion Company.   She sailed with 410 immigrants and experienced an uneventful passage to Nelson, arriving there on July 4, 1876 after a splendid run of 80 days.   She landed 233 of the immigrants for Nelson and Marlborough and then sailed for Wellington arriving at that port on 9 July where she disembarked the remainder of the passengers.   Captain Paton was in command of the ship".

 

It appears that during the voyage there was a complaint made against the ship's surgeon by the ship's captain, about his conduct and treatment of passengers during the voyage.   However, the surgeon made a counter claim against the captain and some of the crew and passengers, accusing the captain of violent behaviour and of orchestrating a conspiracy against him.   Literature regarding these complaints goes into details of the names of all concerned, but the family of Thomas Johns was not involved.

 

Thomas Johns's occupation on the immigration papers is described as a farm labourer and he continued this occupation upon arrival in New Zealand.

 

Nelson, where the family probably disembarked, is a little over 500 kms north of Ashburton, and although we cannot be sure where the family were during their first seven months in New Zealand, by 14 November, 1876 they were living in the Ashburton area where their first NZ born son Sydney, was born.   Two years later, they had moved to Westerfield, a farming district 15kms to the west of Ashburton, where another son Charles Edgar was born.   By 31 March, 1880 when their youngest son Richard was born, they had moved again to Chertsey another farming area, 20kms north of Ashburton on the main highway.

 

Thomas Johns died on 25 August, 1884 aged 50 years, and was buried in the Ashburton Cemetery.    The cause of his death is described as "Cancer of the Parotid Gland, Exhaustion" from which he had been suffering for 18 months. He had been in New Zealand for 8 years.   His address at the time of his death is given as Ashburton.

 

Thomas Johns left behind his wife of 26 years and eleven children:  a daughter Elizabeth who was the eldest aged 26 years, and ten sons whose ages were 24, 20, 18, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, 6, 4.

Caroline Price died in the Jubilee Home, Woolston, Christchurch on 16 June 1928 aged 91 years and was buried beside her husband Thomas at the Ashburton Cemetery.   The cause of death was given as "Myocardial Degeneration".

 

Caroline had a family of twelve children, a daughter and eleven sons. At her death, her daughter Elizabeth was 69 years old, and eight of her sons survived her.   Second son George died when he was approximately 5 years old,     Two other sons who pre-deceased her were James and Hubert. Caroline survived her husband by 44 years and had spent 51 years in New Zealand.
