In the name of God Amen the nine and twentieth day of April in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred fifty and three. I Phillip Nicholas of Landpill in the Countie of Monmouth. Gentleman, beinge sicke in bodie but of perfect memorie (God be praised) doe make and ordaine this my last will & testament in manner and forme followeinge (that is to say) first I comitte my soule to ye hands of my Saviour and redeemer and my bodie to be buried in Christian buriall. Item I give and bequeath all that tenement & lands in Kilgurruge which I purchased of Sr Charles Somersett, Knight. heretofore in the occupation of William Edmund together with one meadowe thereunto adjoining which I purchased of Thomas Morgan and Elenor his wife to my sonne in lawe Edward Davies and Mary his wife and to the heirs of their two bodies lawfully begotten and in default of such issue to the right heirs of the said Edward Davies for ever which said tenement and lands I give and bequeath to the said Edward Davies in manner before expressed as well in satisfaction of the same of one hundred pounds which I was to pay to the said Edward in parte of the marriage portion of the said Mary his wife my daughter And towards the payment of fortie pounds to be payd to my nephew Edward Nicholas within one yeare after my decease. Alsoe I give and bequeath the sume of ten pounds more due to me from William Jones of the Pryorie of Uske Esqr to the said Edward Nicholas which said ten pounds and fortie pounds I doe hereby declare to be in full recompense and satisfaction of the same of fiflie pounds which was due to the said Edward Nicholas from me and payable within one yeare after my decease. Item I give to my three men servants and to my three maid servants (that is to say) James William, William Charles, John Edward, and Marie John, Mary Eustons?, and Anne William the same of fiftie shillings a piece to be paid within one yeare after my decease. Item I appoint the sume of twentie pounds for and towards my funerall expences and my will is that my said sonne in lawe Edward Davies shall pay the said legacies unto the said servants and funerall expences and such debts which I hail happen to owe att the tyme of my decease out of the surplusage of the money for the said lands I valueinge the said tenement and lands to be really worth two hundred and forty pounds and my further will is and I doe hereby give and bequeath to my daughter Bridgett soc much of the hundred pounds residue of the two hundred and forty pounds which shall remaine after the payment of the legacies, debts and funerall expences which I doe enveyne? my said sonne in law Edward Davies to pay accordingly within one yeare after my decease. Item I give and bequeath all and singular the messuages, lands and tenements and one water grist mill lying in Killgurrug within the said county - which I formerly purchased of Howell John Powell. Jane his wife, John their sonne, Edward Fryer and Mary his wife and alsoe all that tenement and lands in Kilgurruge which I lately purchased of Sr Charles Somersett and now in the occupation of Peeter John to my reputed sonne Jonas Nicholas and to the heires of his bodie lawfully begotten, and in default of such issue to my daughter Bndgett Nicholas and to the heires of her bodie lawfully begotten, and in default of such issue to my sonne in law Edward Davies and my daughter Mary his wife and to the heires of their two bodies betweene them lawfully begotten and in default of such yssue to the heires of the bodie of my said daughter Mary lawfully begotten, and in defaulte of such yssue to my reputed sonne William Nicholas and to the heirs of his bodie lawfully begotten, and in default of such yssue to the right heires of the said William Nicholas forever provided allwayes and it is my will and meaninge that the said Jonas Nicholas shall --? --?--? unto my said daughter Bridgett wthin three yeares next after my decease the same of fiftie pounds of lawfull money and my will --7 further? and I doe hereby give and bequeath the said water grist mill to my loving wife Katherine for and dureing ye tearme of her naturall life. Item I doe hereby declare it to be my will and true meaninge and I doe hereby devise all my interest and tearme of yeares in the messuage and lands heretofore in the tenure of William John William my brother in law lying in Kilgurruge wch I lately purchased of the Right Honarable Henry Lord Herbert for ninety nine years determinable upon the decease of my said sonne in law Edward Davies my said daughter Bridget and my said son Jonas Nicholas and the longest liver of them to my said daughter Bridget immediately after the decease of my said wife and my said reputed sonne William Nicholas it beinge my meaning and will that my said wife shall receive the rents and profitts thereof dureinge the tearme of her life and after her decease that my said reputed sonne William Nicholas shall alsoe receive rents, issues and profitts thereof and during the tearme of his naturall life. Item I doe hereby give and bequeath to my said reputed son William Nicholas and to his heires for ever all those two tenemts and lands lyinge in Newchurch which I purchased formerly off Walter Prosser and now in the severall tenures of Henry Saunders and Charles John Stephen but my will is that my said wife shall enioy the said tenement now in the tenure of Henry Saunders during the term of her life. Item I give unto my wife sixe milking cows & one bull and the use of my household stuff during her widowhood. And as for the rest of my personal estate moveable and unmovable, standing come and come in the barne I give and bequeath to my said daughter Bridgett together with all my household stuff after the decease or marriage of my said wife and my will is that my said daughter Bridgett shall allow my sonne in law Edward Davies thirty pounds towards the furnishing of a chamber out of the moneys which the said Edward Davies is appointed by this my will to pay to my said daughter Bridgett. Item my will is that my deare brother Andrewe Nicholas and my nephew Phillip Nicholas shall have the benefit of my tythes of Lanhlowell for two yeares next afler this present yeare one thousand sixe hundred fiftie and three, and after the expiration of those two yeares my will is that my nephew John Nicholas Esqr and my sonne in lawe Edward Davies shall have and enjoy all my interest in the said tythe equally betweene them. And lastly I doe hereby nominal and appoint my said sonne in law Edward Davies and my loveinge friend Edmund Jones of Lansoy Esqr to be executors of this my last will desiring them to see this my last will and testament to be faithfully performed. And I doe hereby appoint my loving Brother Andrew Nicholas to be overseer of this my last will and testament. A schedule to be annexed to the last will and testament of one Phillip Nicholas of Lanpill in the County of Monmouth, Gent which is as followeth (that is to say) first it is my will and true meaning that all the rentes, issues and profits due to me of or from any messuages, lands or tenements whatsoever now in my possession all Michaellmas next or thereabouts for the present yeare shall be paid to my executors for discharging and permormeinge of such legacies, rents or debts upon me due or by me given the residue thereof I give to my daughter Bridgett. Item I give to my very loveinge friend and executor Mr Edmund Jones Esqr one peice of plate to the value of five pounds. In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed dated the twentieth day of July in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand sixe hundred fiftie and three. Philip Nicholas. All so I doe hereby give and bequeath unto Harry Howell and William Lewis both of Lanvihangell Torymynydd five pounds to be equally divided between them. This will and codicil were proved at Westminster before the Judges for probate of wills and granting administrations the first day of December in the yeare of our Lard God one thousand sixe hundred fifty and for by the oaths of Edward Davies and Edmund Jones Esqr. joynt executors named in the said will to whom administration of all and singular the goods, chattells and debts of the said deceased was granted and committed they being first sworn by vertue of a commission well and truly to administer the same
