John Lawrence of Undy 1867.

This is the last Will and Testament of Mr John Lawrence of the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth, Farmer, made this thirty first day of July one thousand eight hundred and sixty seven. I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Hannah Lawrence a yearly annuity of twenty six pounds for her natural life the said yearly annuity to be paid to her by weekly instalments of ten shillings each out of my real estate by my trustees hereinafter mentioned and my Will is that the surplus of the yearly income from my said real estate be deposited at Interest by my trustees at the West of England Bank at Newport in the County of Monmouth as often and as soon as the said Money come into their hands and there to accumulate till the decease of my said Wife Hannah Lawrence and I direct the several Legacies hereinafter made to be paid out of the deposit and accumulation invested in the West of England Bank and the residue to be equally divided amongst my children share and share alike. I also further Give Leave and Bequeath unto my said Wife all my household goods and furniture together with the premium that will be due at my decease from the Benefit Society called the Independent Reform Benefit Society held at the Ship and Pilot Inn in the town of Newport in the County of Monmouth and at the decease of my said Wife Hannah Lawrence I give leave and bequeath unto my son Samuel Lawrence the following freehold property situated on Common y Coed in the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth a House and Garden numbered 594 on the Tithe Map of the parish of Undy also a piece of Arable Land adjoining the former number and numbered on the Tithe Map aforesaid 588 and also another piece of Arable Land near to the last mentioned number and numbered on the Tithe Map aforesaid 595 the said property was purchased by me of her Majesty’s Commissioners of Woods and Forest and also another piece of Arable Land situated near the former Lands and numbered on the Green Moor and Undy Common Enclosure Map 208 the said piece of Land was alloted to me by J.P.Williams Esquire the Valuer in the said enclosure matter And I give desire and bequeath unto my son John Lawrence the following freehold property situated at Common Coed in the parish of Undy aforesaid namely a freehold House and Garden with an Orchard attached thereto and also three pieces of Arable Land adjoining the said House Garden and Orchard and numbered on the Tithe Map of the parish of Undy respectively 593 592 591 590 and 589 the said property was purchased by me of Her Majesty’s Commissioners of Woods and Forests And I also Give desire and bequeath unto my son Edward Lawrence a piece of freehold Pasture Land situated near the Norton in the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth and numbered on the Tithe Map of the said Parish 176 the said piece of Land was also purchased by me of Her Majesty’s Commissioners of Woods and Forests and also another piece of Pasture Land adjoining the former piece and numbered on the said Tithe Map of Undy 122 the said piece of Land was purchased by me of His Grace the Duke of Beaufort and I also Give Desire and Bequeath unto my two Daughters Hannah Matthews and Susan Harris jointly a piece of Arable Land situated on the Middle field in the parish of Magor in the County of Monmouth and numbered on the supplemented Tithe of the said Parish of Magor The said piece of Land was purchased by me of Mr Harding formerly of Tutshill in the parish of Tidenham in the County of Gloucester and I also Give desire and Bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Adams and her husband James Adams for their natural life only a House Garden and piece of Arable Land attached thereto situated on Vinegar Hill in the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth and numbered respectively the House and Gardens 366 and the Land attached thereto 365 and also for their natural life only a piece of Land on Caldicot Moor and numbered on the Caldicot Moor Enclosure Map 223 and 223a the former of these two properties was purchased by me of Her Majesty’s Commissioners of Woods and Forests and part of the Caldicot Moor property was an allotment to Mr John Lawrence now in America and purchased by me of him and at the decease of the said Elizabeth and James Adams my will is that the several properties revert to the heirs of the said Elizabeth Adams the said property is not to be mortgaged or otherwise encumbered by either the said Elizabeth and James Adams during their lifetime. And I also give desire and Bequeath unto my Daughter Ann Sheppard two pieces of Lands adjoining the boundary Wall of the Parish Church of Undy in the County of Monmouth and numbered respectively on the Tithe Map 234 and 240 this property was purchased by me of Mr John Lawrence now in America. And I also further Give and Bequeath unto my Grandson Edwin Lawrence the illegitimate child of my daughter Susan Harris the sum of Twenty pounds to be paid him at his coming of age. I also further Give and bequeath the sum of Thirty pounds unto the four children of my deceased sister Mary namely Emma Lott, Fanny Lott, Sarah Lott, Ann Lott and George Lott to be paid to them at their coming of age in equal shares and my will is that if my beforementioned Grandson die before receiving his legacy and leave no issue that it be equally divided amongst my children hereinbefore named or their Heirs and my will is that if any of the four before mentioned children of my deceased sister Mary Lott die without issue before receiving his her or their share of the legacy hereinbefore mentioned that the survivor or survivors shall and do receive the same. And I nominate and appoint Edwin Matthews Trustee and my son Edward Lawrence Executor of this last Will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all former or other Wills by me at any time heretofore made in Witness whereof I set my hand and seal this day and year hereinbefore written

Be it Known unto all men by these present that I John Lawrence of the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth, Farmer, have made and declared my last Will and Testament

In Writing bearing date the Thirty first day of July One Thousand Eight Hundred and sixty seven. I the said John Lawrence by this present codicil do ratify and confirm my said last Will and Testament and do further give and bequeath unto my daughter Ann Sheppard the sum of Twenty Pounds of Good and lawful money of the realm the said Twenty pounds to be paid to her from the property which I lately purchased of Mrs Leigh of Pontypool Park in the County of Monmouth by Public Auction and my will is that the whole of the property which I bought of the said Mrs Leigh at the said Public Sale of Lands together with the Land which I still more recently purchased at a Public Sale of freehold property of Lord Tredegar of Tredegar Park in the County of Monmouth be either sold by public auction or Private Contract or if the Executor in conjunction with my several children prefer equally divide the said property amongst themselves share and share alike after the above named Legacy has been paid to my said daughter Ann Sheppard her heirs or assigns and my Will and meaning is that this codicil be adjudged to be part and parcel of my last Will and Testament and that all things herein contained and mentioned be faithfully and truly performed as fully and amply in every respect as if the same were do declared and set down in my Last Will and Testament as Witness my hand this seventh day of May one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine.

In Her Majesty’s Court of Probate the District Registry at Llandaff in the Goods of John Lawrence deceased John Lancaster of the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth, Farmer, make oath that I am one of the subscribing witnesses to the Last Will and Testament and to the codicil hereto of John Lawrence late of the parish of Undy aforesaid Farmer deceased the said Will and Codicil being now hereunto annexed bearing date respectively the Thirty first day of July one thousand eight hundred and sixty seven and the seventh day of May one thousand eight hundred and sixty nine and that the said Testator executed the said Will and Codicil on the said days by making his mark at the foot or end thereof respectively in the presence of me and of John Sheppard and Alfred Edwards the other subscribed witnesses thereto the said John Sheppard being the attesting Witness to the said Will and the said Alfred Edwards to the said Codicil and the thereupon attested and subscribed the said Will and Codicil in the presence of the said Testator I the said John Lancaster having subscribed the said Codicil in the places And I further make oath that previously to the execution of the said Will and Codicil by the said Testator the same were read over and explained to him by me and he the said deceased seamed perfectly to understand and approve of the contents of his said Will and Codicil

Proved at Llandaff with a Codicil on the Twentieth day of October 1869 by the oath of Edward Lawrence the son the late deceased to whom administration…………..

 

The Testator John Lawrence was late of the parish of Undy in the County of Monmouth, Farmer and died on the Tenth day of May 1869 at Undy aforesaid
