Roderick Jenkins of Llanover.

In the name of God Amen, the tenth day of September in the fowerth yeare of the Reigne of o’r Sov’aigne Lord James the second by the grace of God, of England, Scottland, France & Ireland, King defender of the faith &c: & in the yeare of o’r Lord God, accordinge to the English computacon, one thousand six hundred eighty & eight, I Roderick Jenkins the elder of Lanov’: in the County of Monmoth & Diocesse of Landaph yeoman, beinge well in body & of good & pffecte memory God be praysed, doe make & ordeyne my last will & testamt in mann’r & forme followinge (that is to say) first I doe commend my soule to Almighty God my maker & redeem’r & my body to be buried in Christian buriall. Allsoe I doe give & bequeath towards the Cathedrall Church of Landaph six pence. Allsoe I doe give & bequeath unto Roderick Jenkins the younger, my eldest sonne & heire appn’te, one great table with frame & jointe stooles that lyeth in the hall, & one little table, with all my bookes & all other goodes whatsoev’: that lyeth in the little roome by the sd: hall, called the study: & one bed steede wherein I doe now lie in the parloure, & one truckle bedd that lyeth under the sd bedsteede with one chest that lyeth in the same roome, and all implem’nts of husbandry belongeth unto horses & oxen. Alsoe I doe hereby devise, give & bequeath unto William Coleman my brother in law all that three p’cells of lands with theire apptenances called & knowne by the sev’all names of Caer Porthor ycha, Caer Porthor Cenol, & Caer Porthor yssa, conteyinge by estimacon fifteene acres more or lesse, situate lyinge & beinge in Lanov’r aforesd: & Lanellen & County aforesaid. To have & to hould the sd three p’cells of lands with theire apptenances unto the sd Will’ Coleman dureinge the terme of his naturall life, & after his decease, I doe hereby devise, give & bequeath the sd: three p’cells of lands with theire apptenances unto my three children Walter Jenkins, Mary Jenkins & Joan Jenkins to be equally devided betweene them, & to their heires and assignes forever provided alwayes that my will & meaninge is that if the said Roderick Jenkins the younger shall satisfie, content & pay after the decease of the sd William Coleman, to, or to the use of the said Walter Jenkins, Mary Jenkins & Joan Jenkins when they shall attaine to the age of one & twentie yeares, or at any time or times after the just & entire sum of forty pownds of lawfull money of England or lawfull tender of them made, to be equally devided betweene them as aforesd that then I doe hereby devise give & bequeath the sd three p’cells of lands unto the sd Roderick Jenkins the younger his heires & assignes forev’r: Alsoe I doe hereby devise, give & bequeath unto Mary my welbeloved wife all that principall messuage wherein I doe now live, barnes, edifices, gardens, orchards, court lodges together with sev’all p’cells of lands, to & with the sd messuage, in as large & ample mann’r as I doe now use & occupie the same, situate lyinge & beinge in Lanov’r aforesd & County aforesd, as by other meares & bounds of anciente times it is well knowne, to have & to hould the sd messuage lands & tenem’ts with all & singular theire apptenances together with the rent or benefitt of annother tenem’t wherein one Thomas Richard now liveth & two acres of lands thereunto adioyning (excepte before excepted) unto the use and behoofe of Mary my sd wife dureinge the terme of her naturall life if shee shall remaine sole & unmarried, & after her decease, or her day of intermarriage, wch shall first happen, I doe hereby devise, give & bequeath the sd messuage lands & tenem’ts with theire apptenances unto the said Roderick Jenkins the younger his heires & assignes forever, provided allways that further my will & meaninge is, if the sd Rodericke Jenkins the younger, or his heires, when hee, or they shall attaine to the age of one & twentie yeares, or uppwards shall satisfie content & pay, or cause to be payed, the just & entire sum of six pownds of lawfull money of England unto Mary my sd wife uppon each the usuall feastes of Snt John the Baptist & Snt John the Evangelist, yearely & each yeare, by even & equall p’cons dureinge the terme of her naturall life if shee shall remaine sole & unmarried as aforesd that then I doe hereby devise, give & bequeath the sd messuage lands & tenem’ts with theire apptenances, given & devised unto Mary my sd wife, unto the sd Roderick Jenkins the younger, his heires and assignes forever. Alsoe I doe order & appointe that if the said Roderick Jenkins the younger, his heires or assignes, shall satisfie, content and pay, or cause to be payed unto the sd William Coleman, the sum of forty shillings of lawfull money of England, uppon each the usuall feasts before expressed by even & equall p’cons yearely and each yeare dureinge the terme of the naturall life of the said William Coleman, that then in considercon of paym’t of the sd sum of forty shillings in mann’r & forme aforesd, I doe hereby devise, give & bequeath the three sd p’cells of lands unto the sd Roderick Jenkins the younger dureinge the terme of the naturall life of the sd William Coleman onely and after his decease to the sev’all uses herein before by mee devised, given & bequeathed. Alsoe I doe give & bequeath unto Mary my sd wife all implem’ts of houshould stuffe (excepte before excepted) to make use of them dureinge the terme of her naturall life if shee shall remaine sole & unmarried, & after her decease, or her day of marriage, I doe give & bequeath the sd implem’ts of houshould stuffe unto the sd Walter Jenkins, Mary Jenkins & Joan Jenkins, to be equally devided betweene them, & to theire executors, administrators & assignes forever. Alsoe I doe give & bequeath unto Mary my sd wife all the rest of my cattells, chattells, corne growinge or in the barne (excepte before excepted), uppon consideracon that shee shall pay & discharge all mann’r of debtes owinge uppon mee whatsoev’r that I have received for my owne use, provided allwayes that if Mary my sd wife shall at any time dureinge the minority of my sd fower children, happen to intermarrie or departe this life, that then I doe nominate & appointe my lovinge cousin Gervas Williams of Lanvrechva in the County aforesd gent, & my lovinge friend Phillipp Hoyskin of Lanov’r aforesd, yeoman, to be ov;rseers over my sd children Roderick Jenkins, Walter Jenkins, Mary Jenkins & Joan Jenkins dureing theire noneage, & I doe hereby give full power & authoritie unto the sd Gervas Williams & Phillipp Hoyskin, or either of them, immediately after the time or terme before limitted & expressed, to enter uppon all her goodes, cattells, chattells, moneys & implem’ts of houshould stuffe whatsoev’r be they quicke or dead & in whose hands or custody wheresoev’r they be. And the sd messuage lands & tenem’ts with theire apptenances before by mee devised given & bequeathed, and the same to imploy to the best advantage & beneffitt as they or either of them shall thinke meete & conveniente & for the maintenance of the sd Roderick, Walter, Mary & Joan till they are able to dispose of the same, and I doe hereby nominate & appointe Mary my sd wife to be my sole executrix of this my last will & testam’t & I doe further appointe Mary my sd wife to be tutor & guardian over my sd fower children untill such time that they shall attaine to their sev’all ages of one & twentie yeares, if theire mother shall remaine sole & unmarried as aforesd. And I doe desire the sd Gervas Williams & Phillipp Hoyskin to see this my last will & testam’t duely executed and p’formed accordinge to the true intent & meaninge thereof.
